Parallel Circuits
 A circuit configuration in which the elements have two
points in common

Elements 1 and 2 have terminals a and b in common; they are therefore in parallel.
Parallel Circuits
 Three configurations provided to demonstrate how
the parallel networks can be drawn.
Parallel Circuits
 Is this a parallel circuit?
Parallel Circuits
 The current is divided in parallel circuit.

IT = I1 + I2 + I3 ..........
 The total resistance of a parallel circuit is the sum of
the all reciprocation of resistances .

1 / RT = 1 / (R1 + R2 + R3 ..........)
 The total voltage drop of a parallel circuit is same
against all resistances.

VT = VR1 = VR2 = VR3 ..........

Parallel Circuits – Total Resistance
 As G = 1/R, the total resistance for the network can
be determined by direct substitution into
following equation.
Example
 Determine the total conductance and resistance for
the parallel network in Figure
Self Task
 Determine the effect on the total conductance and resistance
and resistance of the network in Fig if another resistor of 10 Ω
were added in parallel with the other element.
Example
 Determine the total resistance for the network in Fig.

Self Task
 Find the resistance of the network in Fig.

1/RT = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3

= 1/12 + 1/12 + 1/12
= 3 / 12 = 1 / 4
The above value is in S
