2.0 Course description, objectives, and contents

Course At the outset, research involves collection of data and the process of
Description understanding the data and creating some meaning out of it which requires
statistical techniques. Therefore, the major aim of this course is to help
Students develop an intuition and interest for participation in collection of
information on random phenomena and analysis of the same to deduce
meaning. It will enable students to appreciate, critically evaluate and apply
contemporary research techniques that use basic statistical methods. They
will learn about how to apply statistical techniques and tools in a research
process and consequently acquire competencies for organizing, analyzing
and presenting the findings of quantitative and qualitative data.

Towards this end the course is designed to equip students with a working
knowledge of probability, statistics, and decision making ability in the
presence of uncertainties. It will also introduce them to both theoretical
issues and applications that will be useful in social and academic research
and real life experience. Specifically, this course aims at providing with a
basic understanding of probability, descriptive statistics (summarizing
data), and inferential statistics (making valid generalizations from sample
data) and sampling techniques that are important for research.
Course
Objectives At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

 Analyze data sets critically and apply the tools of statistics to

improve decision making
 Perform statistical computations on data: generate tabular and
graphic display and compute descriptive statistics, estimate
population parameters and perform hypothesis testing
 Explain the technical details and exact interpretation of a statistical
analysis results
 Distinguish between techniques of sampling and decide on the
sample size and sampling techniques that are appropriate for each
study
 Communicate the results of statistical work
 Write up the results of statistical analysis in a report aimed at
improving decision making
Course
Evaluation  Assignments and Quizzes: 20%

 Midterms: 20%

 Final Exam: 60%
