MIDWIFERY CASESTUDY GUIDELINES

GUIDELINES

1. Choose a client who is between 28-32 weeks gestation and follow up to six weeks postnatally
2. Tutor/ nurse must confirm and sign against your client
3. Home visits must be contacted i.e 3 antenatally and 3 postnatally
4. A tutor will mark and guide you in each and every step you make
5. Case studies must be written in two exercise books- 1 rough copy for corrections and one fair
copy for corrected work. Both books must be presented for awarding of marks
6. Ghost clients will lead to immediate nullification of the case study and disciplinary action

a. Objectives of physical examination

c. Head to toe examination- be keen to include obstetric specific areas- anaemia, abdomen,
pelvis, oedema, DVT, varicose veins
8. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS VISITS before you met the client
1 First visit- services offered, results of ANC profile
2 Second visit- services offered ETC
9. SERVICES YOU OFFERED DURING THE VISIT OF FIRST CONTACT IN THE CLINIC
10. LITERATURE REVIEW OF THE CONDITION
11. FIRST ANC HOME VISIT- familiarization visit
12. SECOND ANC HOME VISIT
13. THIRD ANC HOME VISIT
14. REPORT ON LABOUR
a. Admission date and reason for admission
b. What was done on admission- history, physical exam, vaginal examination
c. Management of first stage
d. Recognition and general management of second stage

i. First examination of the neonate- objectives, procedure and findings

NB- attach a photocopy of partograph

17. TERMINATION OF THE CASE STUDY AT SIX WEEKS- THE TUTOR/NURSE MUST BE PRESENT TO
VERIFY AND EVALUATE YOUR CASE STUDY DURING TERMINATION PHASE- Must examine the
mother and the baby

NOTE:
 BEFORE ANY HOME VISIT- identify the relevant topics on which you will teach your
client and formulate a lesson plan. The tutor MUST evaluate your lesson plan before
you proceed for the visit
 AFTER EACH HOME VISIT- write a report entailing what you did and present to the
tutor before proceeding to the next visit
 In case of complicated pregnancy including C/S , a student must explore in details the
specific complication- i.e chief complaints, tests done, diagnosis, management of the
mother, theory about the condition (DEFINITION, CAUSES/ PREDISPOSING FACTORS,
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS, DIAGNOSIS, MANAGEMENT, EFFECTS ON THE
BABY/MOTHER/PREGNANCY, COMPLICATIONS)
