protect players from exploitation and to promote a less rough game. Although he was
only in effect for five years his disappearance prompted a number of unconnected
leagues in the northeastern United States. One of the first and greatest pro teams was
the Original Celtics, organized in 1915 in the city of New York, played 150 games a
season and dominated until 1936. The Harlem Globetrotters, the group was founded in

National Basketball Association (NBA). The Boston Celtics, led by their center Bill
Russell, dominated the NBA from the late 1950s until the end of the next decade. At
the same time, professional teams played annually from coast to coast before millions
of viewers. Wilt Chamberlain, a Los Angeles Lakers power forward, was another star
player of the season and his battles with Russell were eagerly awaited. Kareem Abdul-
Jabbar, another power forward, excelled during the 1970s. Jabbar perfected his
famous hook shot sky (sky hook), while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and
dominated the competition.

the fame of their top players: Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics and Earvin Magic
Johnson, Los Angeles Lakers, is attributed have conveyed emotion in the league
because of their ability and their rivalry during the decade. In the late 1980s, Michael
Jordan of the Chicago Bulls rose to the rank of Star and helped his team to dominate
the NBA in the early 1990s. A new generation of stars such as Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe
Bryant or Larry Johnson has held increasing fame of the NBA.
