Psychogerontological Analysis of the movie "Up: The adventure

of your life"

Film summary:

When he was a child, Carl Fredricksen dreamed of being a great explorer and his
dream place to go exploring was an area in South America known as Paradise
Falls; However, all his plans stopped when he met Ellie, a girl who was also a fan
of exploration. Carl and Ellie were destined to be together, they got married and
lived happily, but everything became complicated when they discovered that they
couldn't have children.

After Ellie's death, Carl decides to return to his dream of going to Paradise Falls, to
fulfill the promise he made to Ellie.

Character's description:

1. Carl Fredricksen: he is a 78-year-old man, white complexion with medium


height, he wears glasses and has a cane that allows him to move from one place
to another, he has a transport chair that he uses as an elevator to go up the stairs
of his home.

2. Ellie Fredircksen: she is a 77-year-old woman, with a white complexion that


can be pale, light blue eyes and long, light hair. She was Carl's wife for many
years, until she unfortunately passed away.
Psychogerontological Framework

Related to the film, we can identify that Carl is in the first stage of aging, known as
primary aging, where bodily deterioration is most noticeable, physical, emotional
and mental changes begin.

This can be shown in the first moments where Carl appears as an older adult,
where he has to use a cane to support himself, and he uses an electric chair to
transport himself from his room, which is on the upper floor of his house. , to his
living room. While Ellie is in the second stage of aging, known as secondary aging,
which involves illness, poor cognitive abilities, and more noticeable fatigue.

In the film you can see how aging manifests itself in different ways. Carl needs to
take certain medications, which, although not shown in detail in the film, can give
us indications of his physical problems, but that does not prevent him from carrying
out his activities: preparing to eat. , water your garden and even read the
newspaper.

While poor aging can be seen in Ellie, as she seemed more tired, and became
easily agitated when walking, this can be supported by Ellie's death as her health
was delicate.

REFLECTION:

It is important to know the area of mental health focused on older adults, to know
its emotional, physical, cognitive and behavioral aspects that encompass it in order
