MODULE 3-CONSTRUCTION
Technology
❑ Cost-effective construction – rapid wall construction, soil-cement block masonry, voided slab
technology, filler slab technology(brief discussion only)

❑ Scaffolding – uses and classification (brief discussion only)

❑ Formwork – requirements of good formwork, classification, slipform(brief discussion only)

❑ Prefabricated construction – advantages and disadvantages, prefabricated building components.

❑ Basic concept of prestressing – fundamental understanding of pre-tensioned and post-tensioned

construction

❑ Construction 3D printing (brief discussion only)

❑ Building failures – general reasons ,Causes of failures in RCC, steel and masonry structures

COST EFFECTIVE CONSTRUCTION
• There is a need for adoption of strong, durable, environmental friendly, energy efficient
and yet cost effective materials and appropriate technologies in construction.

• Complexity can greatly increase the cost of construction

• Eg: Renovation, especially if it requires altering or movement of structural element, cost

will be more because it necessitates demolition as well as construction

• Different technologies are adopted for cost effective construction

• Rapid wall construction, soil-cement block masonry, voided slab technology, filler slab
technology

RAPID WALL CONSTRUCTION
• It is a single panel walling system that serves as both internal and external wall and
eliminates the need for bricks, blocks, timber and steel wall frames.

• These are manufactured from high grade gypsum plaster and glass-fiber

• Ecologically sound & technologically advanced building product available in the world today.
They are hollow board

• Designed and developed in Australia in the early 1990s.

• This building system is 100% recyclable.

• GLASS FIBRE REINFORCED WALL is also called RAPID WALL is an energy efficient
green building material with huge potential for use as load bearing and non load bearing
wall panels.

• It is manufactured using phosphogypsum as a core material which is a waste material from
fertilizer industry and glass fiber used as a reinforcement.

• GFRG(Glass fibre Reinforced Gypsum) is of 12 m in length and 3 m in height.

• Hollow cavities inside the panel is filled with concrete to provide more strength to the
panel. Every third cavity is filled with concrete and reinforced with steel.

• Other cavities can be filled with waste material such as Quarry dust or fly ash depending on
local availability to make them more economic and Eco-friendly.

APPLICATIONS
• Load bearing walls, Partition walls, Slab/floor, Compound walls, Residential houses,
multistorey building

DISADVANTAGES
• Cannot be used for wall with circular or higher curvature

• Clear span shall be limited to 5m for residential buildings, for non residential building
span can be limited as per specified in the manual.

ADVANTAGES
• Reduction in structural weight of building
• Saving of 40% cement, 35% steel, 50% sand, 27% aggregate [cost effective]
• More carpet area

• Construction rate is faster

• Reduction in emission of CO2, Environment friendly [energy efficient]

• Suitable for affordable mass housing

• More resistant to earthquake, fire, water and termite attack

• Less labour force is required.

• This light weight panels has high compressive strength, shear strength, flexural
strength, and ductility compared to brick walls

• Excellent in acoustics

✔ GFRG Panels are processed & manufactured in factory for fixed size i.e, 2.85 x12 m.
panels are cut in factory as per given sizes. Transported to site by stillage trucks and held
vertical to avoid damage. Manufactured at FRBL Kochi [FACT RCF Building]
