1. PEDRO BUC(K)ANEG – Father of Ilocano Literature

3. ISABELO DE LOS REYES – Father of Filipino Socialism
- Also known as Don Belong
- July 4, 1864 – October 10, 1938
- Founder of Aglipayan Church
- His writings were influenced by the European Socialist and
Marxists.
- His works are; Mariquit the Tramp, Sing sing ni Diego, Biblia
Filipina, Officio Divino, Catequesis, Plagerias, Genesis

4. CARLOS S. BULOSAN – November 2, 1913
- His well-known literary piece is his semi- autobiographical novel,
America is in the heart.
- His famous works are; America is in the Heart, The Laughter of
my Father, The Cry and the Dedication, My Father’s Tragedy,
The Romance of Magno Rubio, If you Want To Know What We
Are.
5. F. Sionil Jose – December 3, 1924
- Born in Rosales Pangasinan
- His way of writing was greatly influenced by his mother and Jose
Rizal
- He won several awards; Pablo Neruda Centennial
Award(2004), Philippine National Artist for Literature(2001),
Chevalier dans I’Ordre Des Arts et Lettres(2000), Ramon
Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative
Communication Arts (1980), City of Manila Award for
Literature(1979), Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for
Literature(1959, 1979, 1980, 1981)
- His writings talk about social justice and change which inspired
him to make the five volume novel: ROSALES SAGA.
6. JUAN CRISOSTOMO SOTO – Father of Pampangueñ o Literature
- Exquisite in Crisostan (balagtasan) in Pampanga’s Local Dialect.
- Known as a poet, playwright, and editor in Pampanga’s dialect.
- Writer of Moro-moro and Sarsuela
- His works are; Pula’t Puti, Romeo and Juliet (adapration from
Shakespeare), Sigalot, English-Spanish-Pampango Dictionary
with Modesto Joaquin.
7. ANGELA MARIE MANALANG- August 23, 1907 in Guagua, Pampanga
- She is the writer of “REVOLT FROM HYMEN”
- POEMS, a poem collection published 1940 and was revised 1950.

1. FLORENTINOR HORNEDO – October 16, 1938 in Batanes
- Won Palanca Awards for Literaturein 1989 for his essay “Discourse of
Power in Florante at Laura”
- His works are; The Glitter of Gold, Taming the Wind, Ideas and Ideals
2. FERNANDO MARAMAG – January 21, 1893 – October 23, 1936
- 1917, he became the Editor of “Rising Philippines” a daily read
newspapers of Filipinos.
- He published countless poems like; “My Queen Tagala”, “The Atheist”,
“A Christ without A Cross”, “Jose Rizal”, and “The Presentation”
- His well-known poem is “The Rural Maid”
3. EDITH L. TIEMPO – April 22, 1919 in San Nicolas, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya
- A Professor and a Writer
- She was proclaimed as one of the Philippine’s foremost writers in
English alongside other seminal writers like Jose Garcia Villa.
- Her poetry is hailed for its witty and complex wordplay.
- Her famous works are; “Bonsai” and “The little Marmoset”
REGION 3
1. Francisco Balagtas (A.K.A Francisco Balagtas y de la Cruz )
- April 2, 1788 – February 20, 1862 in Panginay, Bigaa, Bulacan
- also known as Francisco Baltazar, was a prominent Filipino poet, and is
widely considered as one of the greatest Filipino literary laureate for his
impact on Filipino literature. The famous epic, Florante at Laura, is
regarded as his defining work.
- The name "Baltazar", sometimes misconstrued as a pen name, was a
legal surname Balagtas adopted after the 1849 edict of Governor-
General Narciso Claveria y Zaldua, which mandated that the native
population adopt standard Spanish surnames instead of native ones.
- The popular Filipino debate form Balagtasan is named after Balagtas.
- Balagtas learned to write poetry from José de la Cruz (Huseng Sisiw),
one of the most famous poets of Tondo, in return of chicks. It was de la
Cruz himself who personally challenged Balagtas to improve his writing.
Balagtas swore he would overcome Huseng Sisiw as he would not ask

- Balagtas published Florante at Laura upon his release in 1838. He moved
to Balanga, Bataan in 1840 where he served as the assistant to the
Justice of peace and later, in 1856, as the Major Lieutenant. He was also
appointed as the translator of the court. He married Juana Tiambeng on
July 22, 1842 in a ceremony officiated by Fr. Cayetano Arellano, uncle of
future Philippine Supreme Court Chief Justice Cayetano Arellano. They
had eleven children but only four survived to adulthood.

2. Tomas F. Agulto
- Born on 21 December 1953 in Hagonoy, Bulacan. He wrote poems at a
young age and had them commented on by his family and neighbors. He
further honed his poetic skills as a member Galian as Arte at Tula.

Essay
“Ang Mga Badjaw sa Tungkalang” (The Bajao of Tungkalang, 1988) also won
in the Palanca Award. In 1987, the CCP Literary Contest awarded him a prize
for his short story
“Ang Walang Lubay na Istasyon ng Pag-asa (The Unending Stations of Hope
and Search).
REGION IV
1. JOSE P. RIZAL - Rizal was a prolific writer and was anti-violence. He rather fight using his
pen than his might.
- Rizal's two books "Noli Me Tangere" (Touch Me Not) which he wrote
while he was in Berlin, Germany in 1887 and "El Filibusterismo" (The
Rebel) in Ghent, Belgiun in 1891 exposed the cruelties of the Spanish
friars in the Philippines, the defects of the Spanish administration and
the vices of the clergy, these books told about the oppression of the
Spanish colonial rule. These two books made Rizal as a marked man to
the Spanish friars.

4. N.V.M GONZALES – September 8, 1915 – November 28, 1999)
- a Filipino novelist, short story writer, essayist and poet. Conferred
as the National Artist of the Philippines for Literature in 1997

5. NICK JOAQUIN - (May 4, 1917 – April 29, 2004)
- was a Filipino writer and journalist best known for his short stories
and novels in the English language.
- He also wrote using the pen name Quijano de Manila.
- Joaquín was conferred the rank and title of National Artist of the
Philippines for Literature.
- He has been considered one of the most important Filipino writers,
along with José Rizaland Claro M. Recto. Unlike Rizal and Recto,
whose works were written in Spanish, Joaquin's major works were
written in English despite being a native Spanish speaker.

6. LUALHATI BAUTISTA - Born December 2, 1945
- is one of the foremost Filipino female novelists in the history of
contemporary Philippine literature.

7. PAZ MARQUES BENITEZ – Born in 1894, Lucena, Tayabas
- Author of the first Filipino Modern English language short story

- A composer and a multi-talented musician.

1. FÉLIX RESURRECCIÓN HIDALGO Y PADILLA - February 21, 1855 – March 13, 1913
- was a Filipino artist. He is acknowledged as one of the great Filipino
painters of the late 19th century, and is significant in Philippine history for
having been an acquaintance and inspiration for members of the Philippine
reform movement which included José Rizal, Marcelo del Pilar, Mariano
Ponce and Graciano Ló pez Jaena, although he neither involved himself
directly in that movement, nor later associate himself with the First
Philippine Republic under Emilio Aguinaldo.
- His winning the silver medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Arts,
along with the gold win of fellow Filipino painter Juan Luna, prompted a
celebration which was a major highlight in the memoirs of members of the
Philippine reform movement, with Rizal toasting to the two painters' good
health and citing their win as evidence that Filipinos and Spaniards were
equals.

2. ALICE TAN GONZALES cut her teeth on Si Pepe kag si Pilarin the 60s and fed
on Hiligaynon Magazine in late grade school for scant reading materials
within her reach. After Grade II, Alice reconnected with the language in her
study of the Hiligaynon ballad called komposo for her Master’s thesis at the
Ateneo de Manila in the early 1980s. She started writing in Hiligaynon at the
prodding of the “Father of Contemporary West Visayan Literature”
Leoncio P. Deriadain 1988. Born of a Filipina and a Chinese and speaking
Hiligaynon at home, it is no wonder she should write her first short story in
Hiligaynon and discover her deep connection with the language in the
process.
Alice has found a home in the Humanities Division, College of Arts and
Sciences, UP Visayas where she teaches literature and communication. UPV
sent her to school at UP Diliman where she finished her Ph. D. in English
Studies: Creative Writing in 2008. UPV has all this time recognized her and
supported her specialization and expertise in Creative Writing in Hiligaynon
without prejudice or condescension, for which she is constantly thankful. She
writes poetry, drama and fiction in Hiligaynon, and her area of study includes
Hiligaynon folk literature.
She was awarded the Carlos Palanca Hall of Fame for Literature in 2014 for
winning five first places in the Hiligaynon Category of Maikling Kuwento.

REGION VII
1. MAGDALENA GONZAGA JALANDONI - (May 27, 1891 in Jaro, Iloilo - September 14,
1978 in Jaro)
- was a Filipino feminist writer. She is now remembered as one of the most
prolific Filipino writers in the Hiligaynon language. Hailing from Western
Visayas, her works are said to have left permanent and significant
milestones in Philippine literature.
- famous works include Anabella, Juanita Cruz, Sa Kapaang Sang Inaway
(In the Heat of War), Ang Dalaga sa Tindahan (The Young Woman in
the Market) and Ang Kahapon ng Panay (The Past of Panay).
- Throughout her turbulent and displaced life, she still managed to publish 36
novels, 122 short stories, 7 novelettes, 7 long plays, 24 short plays and
dialogos in verse complied in two volumes, seven volumes of personally
compiled essays including some translations from Spanish and two
autobiographies
2. CECILIA MANGUERRA BRAINARD - is an author and editor of nineteen books.
- She co-founded PAWWA or Philippine American Women Writers and
Artists; she also founded Philippine American Literary House. Brainard's
works include the World War II novel, When the Rainbow Goddess Wept,
Magdalena, and Woman With Horns and Other Stories. She edited several
anthologies including Fiction by Filipinos in America, Contemporary Fiction
by Filipinos in America, and two volumes of Growing Up Filipino I and II,
books used by educators
3. ESTRELLA ALFON - July 18, 1917 – December 28, 1983
- was a well-known prolific Filipina author who wrote in English.
- 1940: A collection of her early short stories, “Dear Esmeralda,” won
Honorable Mention in the Commonwealth Literary Award.
- 1961-1962: Four of her one-act plays won all the prizes in the Arena
Theater Play Writing Contest: “Losers Keepers” (first prize), “Strangers”
(second prize), “Rice” (third prize), and “Beggar” (fourth prize).
- 1961-1962: Won top prize in the Palanca Contest for “With Patches of
Many Hues.”
- 1974: Second place Palanca Award for her short story, "The White Dress".[6]
- 1979: National Fellowship in Fiction post at the U.P. Creative Writing
Center.

1. Pedro Acerden
• a Filipino zarzuela playwright who writes in the Waray language.
2. Francisco Alvarado
• a noted playwright of zarzuela in Lineyte- Samarnon.
• He was a member and literary luminary of the Sanghiran San Binisaya organization
which was founded in 1909 to cultivate the Waray language.

1. DAMIANA L. EUGENIO - September 27, 1921 – October 10, 2014
- was a Filipino female author and professor who was known as
the Mother of Philippine Folklore, a title she received in 1986.
- Apart from teaching at the University of the Philippines, she has several
publications in the field of Philippine folklore, among them a series of
seven books which she compiled and edited

2. TELESFORO S. SUNGKIT, JR. - is a Higaonon poet and novelist.
- He is the author of Batbat hi Udan, a novel in Filipino.
- He won the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
Writers' Prize 2007 for his Cebuano novel Mga Gapnod sa Kamad-
an and the NCCA Writers' Prize 2011 for his Cebuano Novel Ang
Agalon sa mga Balod.
- He is also a recipient of the National Book Development Board Trust
Fund for Writers for his Cebuano novel Mga Tigmo sa Balagbatbat.
- His novel Driftwood on Dry Land was published by University of Santo
Tomas Publishing House in 2013. He writes in Higaonon, Cebuano,
Filipino and English.
REGION XI
2. TITA LACAMBRA AYALA - was born in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte but grew up in Antamok,
Benguet.
- She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) Major in English,
minor in History, at the University of the Philippines in 1953.
- Tita is one of the most celebrated Filipino poets in English with her work
receiving numerous awards.
- She has authored many books in her distinguished career, among them
Sunflower Poems (1960), Friends, The Confessions of a
Professional Amateur (prose) and Camels and Shapes of Darkness
in a Time of Olives (poetry).
