What is Nerve Cells or Neurons?

The nerve cells or neurons are the

fundamental units of the brain and
nervous system. Their main function is to
carry or collect messages, or nerve
impulses are relayed to the brain and
sent back to the body part involved for
proper action or reaction.
3 Classes of Neurons

1. Sensory Neurons

2. Motor Neurons

3. Interneurons
3 Classes of Neurons
1. Sensory Neurons

Get information about what's

going on inside and outside
of the body and bring that
information into the CNS so
it can be processed.
3 Classes of Neurons
2. Motor Neurons

Get information from other

neurons and convey commands
to your muscles, organs and
glands.

3. Interneurons
Which are found only in the CNS,
connect one neuron to another. They
receive information from other
neurons (either sensory neurons or
interneurons) and transmit information
to other neurons (either motor
neurons or interneurons).
Parts of Nerve Cells

Nucleus
Parts of Nerve Cells
Nucleus
A dense structure present in
many cells. Typically a single
rounded structure encased within
a membrane, the nucleus
contains the genetic information.

Cell Body
Parts of Nerve Cells
Cell Body
• The compact section of a
neuron where its nucleus is
located.
• Maintains the neuron's
structure, and provides energy
to drive activities.

Dendrites
Parts of Nerve Cells
Dendrites
• Hair-like projections from the
head (cell body) of a neuron.
• They sit ready to catch a
neurotransmitter, a chemical
signal, that has been released by
a neighboring neuron.

Myelin Sheath
Dendrites
Parts of Nerve Cells
Myelin Sheath
• A fatty layer that wraps around the
axons of neurons.
• Allows electrical impulses to
transmit quickly and efficiently
along the nerve cells.

Parts of Nerve Cells
Axon
• The long, tail-like extension of a
neuron
• Carry electrical impulses that are
the means of communication
within the brain and between the
brain and the rest of the body.

• Is any of the button-like
endings of axons through which
axons make synaptic contacts
with other nerve cells or with
effector cells.
