is surgery to treat many diseases, injuries
and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and
the hard and soft tissues of the oral and

n It is an internationally recognized surgical
specialty. In some countries, including the
United States, it is a recognized specialty of

n The 3rd century AD, ‘Internal Classic’ : Oral Physiology and
Pathology
n In the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316 AD): the world's first cleft
lip surgery was performed, recorded 'cleft craft' by Millard
n During the Tang Dynasty (652-665 AD): abscess incision, joint
reduction, Acupuncture n for pain relief and treatment of facial
paralysis
n Song Dynasty (960-1279): dental replantation surgery
n Greece Hippocartes (4th century AD): fracture, tooth extraction
n Persian Rages (850-923 AD): arsenic assisted tooth extraction
n Arabic Abulcasis (1050-1122): designed dental surgical
instruments
n Americans: laughing gas, ether anesthesia

oral and maxillofacial surgeon
n An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a regional
specialist treating the entire craniomaxillofacial
complex: anatomical area of
the mouth, jaws, face, skull, as well as associated
structures.
n Maxillofacial surgeons may require training
in dentistry, surgery, and general medicine .
n All oral and maxillofacial surgeons must obtain a
university degree in dentistry before beginning
residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Further training for OMS surgeon
n They also may choose to undergo further training in
a 1 or 2 year subspecialty Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery Fellowship Training in the following areas:
n Head and neck cancer – microvascular
reconstruction
n Cosmetic facial surgery
n Craniofacial surgery/Pediatric Maxillofacial
surgery/Cleft Surgery
n Cranio-maxillofacial trauma
n Head and neck reconstruction (plastic surgery of the
head and neck region)
n Maxillofacial regeneration (reformation of the facial
region by advanced stem cell technique)
