Background of Problem:

This problem has been designed to enhance and expedite students’ learning of specific topic
in this subject. Each student has been provided with the freedom to devise his own
methodology to solve the problem.

Problem Statement-1:
“Compute the average vertical stress distribution at the center of clay layer and also
compute the total differential settlement the following multi-storey building would experience
right after construction and [25 – (Reg.# / 25)] years after construction. The total load
imposed by the building is [150 + (Reg.#/50) MN (Note: All middle piles bear equal load,
while those on the edges bear 60% of the middle piles). The cone penetration resistance
profile below the natural surface level is given, while both pile lengths and soil properties are
also summarized for prospective use in solution. Assume suitable values for the missing
data.”
