TYPES OF BURNS

1.Thermal injury-

Scald – spillage of hot liquids

Flame burns

Flash burns

Contact burns

2.Electrical injury

3.Chemical burns

4.Cold injury

5.Ionising radiation

6.Sun burns

CLASSIFICATION

Depending on the percentage of burns I)Depending on thickness of skin involved


1.MILD
Partial thickness burns < 15% in adult a) First degree- epidermis red and painful
Full thickness burns less than 2% no blisters
2.MODERATE b) Second degree- affected area mottled,
Second degree of 15-25% burns painful with blisters
Third degree between 2-10% burns c)Third degree- affected area charred,
3.SEVERE parchment like, painless and
Second degree burns more than 25% in insensitive
adults d) Fourth degree-involves underlying tissue,
All third degree burns of 10% or more muscles

II)Depending on the thickness of skin involved

a) Partial thickness burns: red painful burns, often with blisters

b) Full thickness burns: charred, insensitive, deep involving all layers of skin
