Extra assistance
Writing and answering questions is an important skill
in many school subjects. Give students opportunities
to practise writing questions and also writing
answers.
A question is a sentence that asks for information:
who, when, where, why, what is it, how many, what
colour or shape, how long, and so on. A question
starts with a capital letter and ends with a question
mark.
Ideally, a question should be answered with a
sentence which repeats part of the question. For
example: Where does a dolphin live? A dolphin lives
in the sea.
Classroom activities
Sentence Shuffle
Write and jumble an enlarged version of the
sentence: Dolphins can swim in the sea. Read it with
the children and ask them to work out the correct
order. Reproduce the sentence on small cards so
students can make the sentence themselves and
read it. Suggest clues such as capital letters and full
stops. Discuss the sentence when they are done.
