The engine shall be designed and constructed in accordance with the Rules and
Regulations of Classification Society prevailing at the date of contract.
The following shall be supplied for one(1) ship. (For the details, please refer to
items 4, 5 and 6 in this specification.)
Details not specified in this specification are in accordance with the engine
builder's practice.
*1) Engine net weight is dry basis including flywheel, turbocharger(s), thrust
bearing, turning gear and aux. blower with motor, but excluding water and
oil in the engine, spare parts and tools.
2) Dimensions and piston overhaul height are shown separately in the
drawings.
3) The above output is valid at sea level and up to tropical conditions;
- Sea water inlet temperature : 32 °C
- Blower inlet pressure : 1,000 mbar (750 mmHg)
- Blower inlet temperature : 45 °C
(1) The specific fuel oil consumption at maximum continuous rating(optimising point)
shall be guaranteed to be :

For other reference conditions, the following corrections shall be used for
consumption, at retained cylinder maximum pressure.
The guarantee period is the shorter period between twelve(12) months after
delivery of ship and eighteen(18) months after delivery of engine.
The following accessories are to be supplied with the engine as standard supply.
Any modification from the following specification shall be regarded as extra works.
(3) Lube oil tank, pumps, cooler, temperature control valve, oil filter, pipings &
fittings for T/C L.O system to be provided by shipbuilder.
(1) Electric motor, starter and remote control box with cable (Length = 20m), one
plug and two receptacles are to be provided.

The following parts and instruments are to be supplied loose for fitting on the
manoeuvring console stand.
The work and the material required for connection between the engine and the
control room by wiring are to be provided by the shipbuilder.

5. SPARE PARTS
The spare parts shall be supplied in accordance with the enginebuilder's standard
and fulfilled the requirements of the Classification Societies.
The additional spare parts required by owner, if any, shall be supplied with
additional cost.
(1) Cylinder cover complete with fuel, exhaust, starting, safety and 1 cyl.
indicator valves, studs and nuts for valves (disassembled)
(2) Studs and nuts for cylinder cover tightening 1/2 cyl.
5.5) Piston

6. TOOLS
7. PAINTING
Outer side of the engine (including the pipes) shall be painted with a primer (two
coatings) and a finish paint (two coatings) which color in Munsell No. 7.5BG 7/2
Inner side of the crankcase shall be painted with an oil resistant paint (two
coatings, Munsell No. N-9).
Surface for the exhaust manifold prior to insulation shall be painted with a
heat-resistant paint (two coatings).

8.1) Inspection

All the material tests and inspection required by the Rules of Classification
Society are to be carried out in the presence of Surveyor of the Classification
Society and Owner's representatives.
Only the shop test and overhaul inspection are to be carried out in the presence
of the Owner's Representative and Surveyor of the Classification Society.
However, if the owner's Representative can not attend them due to his
convenience, these tests and inspections are to be entrusted to the Surveyor of
the Classification Society and/or the enginebuilder's inspector, and results of which
is to be accepted'by the ownef.
At the time of the shop test, marine diesel fuel oil is to be used, and lub. oil is
to be in accordance with the enginebuilder's standard.
8.3) Overhauling
Main parts of the engine shall be overhauled and inspected after the shop test.

The bedplate is divided into sections of suitable size, in accordance with the
production facilities available. It consists of high, welded, longitudinal girders and
welded cross girders with cast steel bearing supports. For fitting to the engine
seating, long, elastic holding down bolts tightened by hydraulic tools are to be
used.
The oil pan, which is made of steel plate and is integrated in the bedplate,
collects the return oil from the forced lubricating and cooling oil system. It is
provided with a suitable number of drains with grating.
The main bearings consist of steel shells lined with white metal. The bottom shell
can, by means of special tools, be rotated out and in. The shells are kept in
position by a bearing cap and long, elastic studs with nuts tightened by hydraulic
tools.
The chain drive is located at the thrust bearing in ihe aft end of the engine.
The thrust bearing is of the B&W-Michell type, and consists, primarily, of a.thrust
collar on the crankshaft, a bearing support, and segments of cast iron with white
metal. The thrust shaft is an integral part of the crankshaft. The propeller thrust is
transferred-through-the -thrust-GoWar, the-segments, and the bedplate - to • the- engine
seating and end chocks.
The thrust bearing is lubricated by the engine's main lubricating oil system.
The frame box unit is of welded design and is divided into sections of suitable
size, determined by the production facilities available.
On the exhaust side, it is provided with a relief valves and a man hole for each
cylinder while, on the camshaft side, it is provided with a large hinged door for
each cylinder.
A slotted pipe for the cooling oil outlet from the piston is suspended in the frame
box. The frame box is attached to the bedplate with bolts. The stay bolts, which
are made in one part, connect the bedplate, frame box and cylinder frame to form
a unit. To prevent transversal oscillations, each stay bolt is braced.
The stay bolt nuts are tightened hydraulically with the use of jacks.
The cylinder frame unit(s) is (are) of cast iron and mutually assembled with bolts.
Together with the cylinder liners they form the scavenge air space.
At the chain drive, the upper part of the chain wheel frame is fitted.
The cylinder cover is of forged steel, made in one piece and has bores for
cooling water. It has a central bore for the exhaust valve and bores for fuel
valves, safety valve, starting valve and indicator valve.
The cylinder cover is attached to the cylinder frame with 8 studs and nuts
tightened by hydraulic jacks.
10.6) Crankshaft
The engine is fitted with an axial vibration damper, which is mounted on the fore
end of the crankshaft.
The damper consists of a piston and a split-type housing located forward of the
foremost main bearing. The piston is made as an integrated collar on the main
journal, and the housing is fixed to the main bearing support.
The connecting rod is made of forged steel and provided with bearing caps for
the crosshead and crankpin bearings.
The crosshead and crankpin bearing caps are secured to the connecting rod by
studs and nuts. The studs are tightened by hydraulic tools and secured with lock
nuts and locking plates.
The crosshead bearing consists of a set of thin-walled steel shells lined with
bearing metal. The crosshead bearing cap is in one piece and is provided with an
angular cut-out for piston rod.
The crankpin bearing is provided with thin-walled steel shells, lined with bearing
metal. Lub. oil is supplied through ducts in the crosshead and connecting rod.
The piston consists of piston crown and piston skirt. The piston crown is made of
heat-resistant steel and is provided with four ring grooves which are hard-chrome
plated on both the upper and lower surfaces of the grooves. The piston crown is
with "high topland", i.e. the distance between the piston top and the upper piston
ring has been increased. The piston skirt is of cast iron.
The piston rod is of forged steel and is surface-hardened on the running surface
for the stuffing box. The piston rod is connected to the crosshead with four
screws. The piston rod has a central bore which, in conjunction with a cooling oil
pipe, forms inlet and outlet for-cooHng oH.
The crosshead is of forged steel and is provided with cast steel guide shoes with
white metal on the running surface.
A bracket for oil inlet from the telescopic pipe and another for oil outlet to a
slotted pipe are mounted on the crosshead.
The exhaust valve consists of a housing with gas channel and spindle guide. The
housing is water cooled and made of nodular cast iron. Between the cylinder
cover and the housing there is a bottom piece.
The bottom piece, which is made of cast iron and has a hardened seat for the
spindle, is water cooled on its outer surface.
The valve spindle is of the Nimonic type and is provided with a small vane wheel
on which the exhaust gas acts during operation, thus making the spindle rotate
slightly.
The hydraulic system consists of an actuator, activated by a cam on the camshaft,
a high pressure pipe, and an oil cylinder for the exhaust valve spindle, mounted
on top of the housing. The hydraulic system opens the exhaust valve, while the
closing force is provided by an air spring. The last part of the closing of the
exhaust valve is damped by throttling in the hydraulic system.
Air sealing of the exhaust valve spindle guide is provided.
Each cylinder cover is equipped with two fuel valves, one starting valve, one
safety valve and one indicator valve. The opening of fuel valve is controlled by
the fuel oil pressure created by the fuel pump, and the valve is closed by a
spring.
An automatic vent slide allows circulation of fuel oil through the valve and high
pressure pipes, and prevents the compression chamber from being filled up with
fuel oil in the event that the valve spindle is sticking when the engine is stopped.
Oil from the vent slide and other drains is led away in a closed system.
The starting valve is opened by control air from the starting air distributor and
closed by a spring.
The safety valve is spring-loaded.
The indicator valve is placed near the indicator gear.
The engine is provided with one fuel pump for each cylinder. The fuel pump
consists of a pump housing, a centrally placed pump barrel, a plunger and a
shock absorber. In order to prevent fuel oil from being mixed with the lubricating
oil, the pump actuator is provided with a sealing arrangement.
The pump is activated by the fuel cam, and the volume injected is controlled by
turning the plunger by means of a toothed rack connected to the regulating
mechanism.-
The roller guide housing is provided with a manual lifting device which, during
turning of the engine, can lift the roller guide roller free of the cam.
The fuel oil system is provided with a puncture valve for each cylinder, which
prevents high pressure from building up during normal stopping and shut down.
The fuel oil high-pressure pipes are equipped with protective hoses.
10.15) Governor
The cylinder lubricators, one per cylinder, are both speed dependent and load
change dependent. They are controlled by the engine, revolutions, and are
mounted on the roller guide housing, and interconnected with shaft pieces. The
lubricators have a "Built-in" capability to adjust the oil quantity. They are of the
"Sight Feed Lubricator" type and are provided with a sight glass for each
lubricating point. The oil is led to the lubricator through a pipe system from an
elevated tanklyard's supply).
Once adjusted, the lubricators- will basically have a ©Binder- oil--feed rate
proportional to the engine revolutions.
The Load Change Dependent system is automatically increased.the oil feed rate in
case of a sudden change in engine load, for instance during manoeuvring or
rough sea conditions.
The speed dependent lubricator, a speed and mean effective pressure(MEP)
dependent lubricator is to be fitted.
10.17) Reversing
The turning wheel has cylindrical teeth and is fitted to the thrust shaft. The turning
wheel is driven by a pinion on the terminal shaft of the turning gear, which is
mounted on the bedplate. The turning gear is driven by an electric motor with
built-in gear and brake.
The turning gear is provided with a blocking device that prevents the main engine
from starting when the turning gear is engaged. Engagement and disengagement
of the turning gear is effected manually by an axial movement of the pinion.
The engine is provided with gallery brackets, gratings, and stanchions. The
brackets are placed at such a height that the best possible overhauling and
inspection conditions are achieved.
Some main pipes of the engine are suspended from the gallery brackets.
The air intake to the turbocharger takes place direct from the engine room through
the intake silencer of the turbocharger. From the turbocharger the air is led via the
charging air pipe, air cooler and scavenging air receiver to the scavenging ports of
the cylinder liners. The charging air pipe between turbocharger and air cooler is
provided with a compensator and is heat insulated on the outside.
10.22) AijLCQCjer
From the exhaust valves the gas is led to the exhaust gas receiver where the
fluctuating pressure from the individual cylinders is equalized, and the total volume
of gas led further on to the turbocharger at a constant pressure. After the
turbocharger, the gas is led to the external exhaust pipe system.
Compensators are fitted between the receiver and the exhaust valves, and
between the receiver and the turbocharger.
For quick assembling and disassembling of the joints between the exhaust gas
receiver and the exhaust valves, clamping bands are fitted. The exhaust gas
receiver and exhaust pipes are provided with insulation, covered by galvanized
steel plating.
There is a protective grating between the exhaust gas receiver and the
turbocharger.
The engine is provided with two electrically-driven blowers. The suction side of
blowers is connected to the scavenge air space after the air cooler.
Between the air cooler and the scavenge air receiver, non-return valves are fitted
which automatically close when the auxiliary blowers supply the air.
The auxiliary blowers will start operating before the engine is started and will
ensure sufficient scavenge air pressure to obtain a safe start.
During operation of the engine, the auxiliary blowers will start automatically each
time the engine load is reduced to about 30-40% and it will continue operating
until the load again exceeds approximately 40-50%.
In cases where one of the auxiliary blowers is out of service, the other auxiliary
blower will automatically compensate without any manual readjustment of the
valves, thus avoiding any engine load reduction. This is achieved by the
automatically working non-return valves in the suction pipe of the blowers.
The pipes for the forced lubrication and cooling oil system are made of steel.
The main forced lubrication is led to each main bearing through branches from the
main lubrication pipe located along the engine.
Cooling> oil is led to the telescope pipe' through-branches from \he ©oolinf-oJi
main pipe located along the cooling jackets on the exhaust side of the engine,
through which the oil is led to the crossheads.
From there some of the oil is branched off for lubrication of the crosshead shoes
and crosshead bearings and is led through the bored connecting rod to the crank
bearing. Some of the oil is led through a pipe in the bore of the piston rod for
cooling of the piston.
The oil return from here through the piston rod and further to a slotted pipe.
The camshaft bearing and hydraulically operated exhaust valve gear are arranged
for lubrication and supplying from boosted lubricating oil.
Cylinders and exhaust valves are cooled by fresh water. The fresh water is led
from the main piping along the engine through branches to the cooling jacket of
each cylinder.
The water is led from the cooling jacket up through the cylinder cover and
exhaust valve housing and from there to a manifold through which it is carried
back to the fresh water cooler.
The lubricating oil, fresh water and air coolers are cooled by means of fresh
water.
The fresh water pipes on the engine are of steel.
The starting air system contains a main starting valve (One ball valve with
actuator), a non-return valve, a starting air distributor, and starting valves. The
main starting valve is combined with the manoeuvring system, which controls start
of the engine.
The starting air distributor regulates the supply of control air to the starting valves
so that they supply the engine cylinders with starting air in the correct firing order.
The starting air distributor has one set of starting cams for "Ahead" and one set
for "Astern", as well as one control valve for each cylinder.
This system is designed to protect the main engine from the abnormal condition.
It has such functions as emergency shut down and manual emergency stop.

The engine is designed to operate with heavy fuel oil having a viscosity of up to
700 cSt/50 Deg.C.
(7000 sec. Redwood No. 1 at 100 Deg.F)
The marine lub. oil with good oxidation resistance and good detergent,
depressant properties, is recommendable to be applied for circulating oil. The
viscosity grade of oil corresponds to SAE 30.
The high alkaline cylinder oil for large marine diese! engines, containing high
alkalinity additives that neutralize combustion acid, is applied for heavy residual
fuel operation.
The viscosity grade of oil corresponds to SAE 50. In each individual case it is
recommended that cylinder oil is selected after consultation with the oil supplier
and the-enginebuilder.

slopped for mo re t h a n 30 m i n u t e s , it is recommended to a c t i v a t e the
manual s l o w - t u r n i n g s w i t c h on the c o n t r o l room c o n t r o l console,
c a u s i n g v a l v e (28) to p r e v e n t a c t u a t i o n of the mo in s t a r t i n g v a l v e .
The s w i t c h s h o u l d r e m a i n a c t i v a t e d u n t i l I the e n g i n e has t u r n e d at
least one r e v o l u t i o n , after whitch the norma I start procedure
c o n t i n u e s , i . e . t h e m a i n s t a r t i n g v a l v e opens.
When the e n g i n e has reached the start l e v e l r/min by means of
a i r , the r e g u l a t i n g h a n d l e is to be moved to the wonted p o s i t i o n
in t h e g r a d u a t e d range o f r e g u l a t i o n . I n t h i s p o s i t i o n both t h e
s t a r t i n g v a l v e and the stop v a l v e ore deactuated and
s i g n a l s to the f o l l o w i n g components are vented :

Valve (38) and, c o n s e q u e n t l y , p i l o t signal to v a l v e s (25) and (117).
Thereby the activation of the s t a r t i n g air distributor is cut off
ond the puncture valve is vented, allowing high pressure fuel o i l
to reach f u e l v a l v e s .

V o l v e (33) via v a l v e (90), w h i c h c u t s off p i l o t s i g n a l to v a l v e (26)
to cut off air supply to s t a r t i n g air d i s t r i b u t o r ond valve (27)
to close m a i n s t a r t i n g v a l v e , both d e l a y e d about 1 second by v a l v e
(32).
Then the s t o r t i n g air supply to the c y l i n d e r s is cut off and the
engine w i l l run on f u e l .
Thereafter the potenti otne ter(B2) controls the speed setting
signal to the governor.

Repeated start
I n case o f failure to start, i.e. il t h e e n g i n e stops a f t e r the

g o v e r n o r o u t p u t a t a n e w s t a r t a t t e m p t . T h i s i s t o b e done b y
activating the switch (79) f o r c a n c e l l i n g o f limiter in governor
during the s t a r t sequence a t a repeated s t a r t , as described above.

e l e c t r o n i c a l l y i n t h e b r i d g e c o n t r o l system. T h e c o n v e r s i o n i n t o
