Student Report

Quynh Anh | Lion 2 | October 2023

Welcome to the latest edition of our Monthly Student Report! In these reports, we're excited to
share the incredible growth and accomplishments of our students over the past month. Join us
as we reflect on the various academic, social, and personal achievements that make our
students shine. It's a testament to their dedication, hard work, and the unwavering support of
our school community. Let's celebrate their progress and look forward to even more success in
the months to come!

What we achieved this month in class:

In Language Art, we are learning letters with their sounds. Students must identify letters, say
the sound, write the lowercase and capital letter, identify words with a given beginning sound
and name some vocabulary with a given letter or sound. Students are also able to identify
whether a letter is a vowel or consonant. In our lessons, we blend CVC words in two ways. The
first method is onset and rime blending, where we identify the initial consonant or consonant
cluster (onset) and the vowel and following consonants (rime) in words like "cat," sounding
out /k/, /at/ and then blending them together to say the complete word. The second method is
phoneme blending, where we break words into their individual phonemes, the smallest sound
units, as in "cat," where we identify /k/, /a/, and /t/, and then blend these phonemes in
sequence to read the word. Both techniques are crucial for developing phonemic awareness
and reading skills in our students. We are learning high-frequency words - students must read,
write, spell, and make sentences with these words. Our high-frequency words are “I, like, the,
and, a, see, we, to, come, me, my, and with”. In Math, we've been focusing on numbers up to
10, counting objects, writing numbers and their names, writing number pairs and comparing
sets of objects. We're also exploring the fascinating world of 3D shapes. We're learning about
the unique attributes of each shape, understanding the difference between 2D and 3D shapes,
and putting our knowledge to the test by identifying which shapes can stack, roll, or slide. In our
Science lessons, we've been on an exciting journey to understand our planet and its workings.
We've explored the transition from day to night and what we can observe during both times, as
well as the distinctions between objects that are close and those that are far away. Additionally,
we've delved into the concept of gravity and its effects. This exploration of our world and its
natural phenomena broadens our students' knowledge of the environment around them. Our
Art activities are not only enjoyable but also an excellent way to enhance fine motor skills.
Students enjoy practising their precision and fine motor skills while letting their creative ideas
shine. Additionally, they find delight in dancing and playing games that promote gross motor
skills, contributing to their physical development and coordination. These activities strike a
wonderful balance between fun and skill-building in our classroom.

What Quynh Anh excelled in:

Language Arts
Quynh Anh can blend onset and rime words well, has a great level of phonological awareness
(though she should practise blending Phonemes) and can recognise and read all the high
frequency words we have learnt in Unit 2 (see, we, to, a, like). She should practise more with
listening comprehension. Quynh Anh received 24/30 on the test.

Maths
Quynh Anh can model and compare sets to 10, she still struggles to understand numbers that are
greater/less than and should continue practising the counting order. Quynh Anh received 13/21 on
the test.

Science
Quynh Anh has a basic understanding of science concepts, including day and night sky distinctions,
gravity effects, seasons, weather conditions, and related attire and activities. However, she does
not grasp the concept of Earth's rotation or proximity awareness. Quynh Anh received 13/20 on
the test.

Behaviour or something special:

We are exceptionally proud of Quynh Anh for her remarkable progress over the past few months.
She consistently puts in her best effort, even when faced with uncertainty, and actively engages in
the learning process while maintaining focus during instructional time. Occasionally, she may
require repetitions of questions or instructions, but her determination and commitment are truly
commendable.

Practise at home:
To reinforce and review the concepts learned in our classroom at home, students can engage in a
variety of activities. In Language Arts, they can practise letter recognition and sounds by making
flashcards with lowercase and capital letters. They can also create word cards that represent
vocabulary words with specific letter sounds, and even play word identification games with family
members. For phonemic awareness, parents can encourage phoneme blending games by breaking
down words into their individual sounds, and they can use our list of high-frequency words for
reading, writing, spelling, and sentence-making exercises. In Math, children can continue working
on their counting skills by counting everyday objects and practising writing numbers and their
names. Exploring and identifying 3D shapes in their surroundings can be a fun home activity, like
finding items that stack, roll, or slide. Our Science lessons can extend into family discussions about
day and night, objects near and far, and the concept of gravity. Engaging in observations and
experiments at home can further enrich their understanding.

Many Thanks from the Lion 2 Team,

Ms Gabby, Ms Lily and Ms Ly.
