Teens and Investment A Qualitative Study Edited
Abstract
Investment is something a person has or possess that will serve as the capital to gain
a profit. his study is to found out the reasons why Filipino teens don’t engage in
investment. The need to educate teens about investment and what could be the best
alternative investment suits for the teens. This study will employ a phenomenological
approach that employs qualitative research method. This study seeks to find out; The
perception of teens about investment; Difference between savings and investment; Types
of investment preferred by the teens; The will and interest to be educated in investment;
and The reasons of teens on not engaging themselves in investment. The researchers
interview ten (10) teens in Basak, Pardo using a purposive sampling with a semi-
structured interview guide questions. In analyzing the gathered data, Colaizzi’s method is
used. The findings of the study showed that teens have a knowledge about investment
and savings. It also showed that teens are willing to learn more about investment and that
practices and risk tolerance are factors that hinders the teens on not engaging in
investment. Furthermore, the researchers are recommending to the DepEd officials to
implement an investment subject in the curriculum. And for the future researchers to
create either a quantitative or qualitative study about the best investment alternative for
teens or solving the problem about teens not having an investment knowledge and other
easy ways for the teens to improve it.
Rationale
Investing is something a person has or possess that will serve as the capital to gain a
profit. (Malik, 2008). According to other studies people invest money in hope of getting
good returns, enough liquidity and safety (Ambedkar, 2015). Iyer and Bhaskar (2012)
stated that investment is defined as the purchasing of goods to create wealth. The where
and how to investment is the main concern of every individual to have an investment
(Nofsinger & Richard, 1999). The main reason why choosing an investment is an
important decision to be made.
Lusardi, Mitchelle, and Curto (2010) stated that in United States young people don’t
have enough knowledge to make financial decisions.
In addition, the Book of Rutgers (n.d) savings is done for emergency funds and
short-term goals, it is usually known to people but has low rate of return. While
investment is for long- term goals and capital growth of money over long period and has
higher rate of return. According to Folger (n.d) there are various types of investment that
was offered. Bonds, a type of investment that was an individual lend money either in a
government or in a business with an interest rate. Second, certificate of deposits is
depositing money without withdrawing it in a certain time. Third, mutual funds are
collection of funds from different investors and invest it in securities. Lastly, stock
means having an ownership in a company.
Moreover, the greater the risk, the greater the return, and it should be balance
between risks and reward that is very important in making an investment. According to
Jose Nimmons (2017), stated that if the teens invest early they the chances to re-invest in
a higher risk if something might go wrong. While in the study of Aren & Aydemir
(2015) revealed that there are different investment entities that are preferred by people
working on a financial sector in Turkey. Also studies about foreign currency, bank
deposits, bond, stock and mutual funds. Result shows that most of the people living in
Turkey are small savers without thinking of having a portfolio. According to Ambedkar
(2015), majority of Indians dislike investing their funds and preferring to hold their cash
with them, 33.7 % of the total household of India saves.
Nationally, in the Philippines, Tiogson (2017) stated that Filipinos are not educated
enough to various investment tools and having low of income makes investing
impossible. Llanto & Rosellon (2017) states that only about 43 % of the adult population
in the Philippine saves while 68% keep their savings at home.
Stated in Pinoy money talk (2018) the five (5) investment option in which Filipinos
can invest are; first, in government securities with eventually low interest. Second,
corporate bonds that give an interest that is fixed but risky. Third, mutual fund that is
commonly offered banks. Fourth, is about stock or ownership share within a company.
Lastly, a real estate that talks about property pricing. According to ABS-CBN News
(2014) investing at a young age will boost the chances of young investors to make
money because of their long term investment horizon.
Locally, Cebu and other Visayas region, retail stocks market investor increases and
an expert said that an internet free information help the growth of an investor. Studies
3
However, the following literature and studies focuses specifically on adult investors
and individuals and not into beginners or teens that are new to this field. The following
researches are mostly done by foreign individuals.
Thus, the researcher’s intention for conducting this study is to found out the reasons
why Filipino teens don’t engage in investment. The need to educate teens about
investment and what could be the best alternative investment suits for the teens.
Statement of Objectives
The main aim of this study is to find out the teens perception towards investment
this school year 2018-2019.
The result would be very essential and helpful to the following individuals. First, are
teens or students, where the findings of this study can be used by teens or the students for
them to gain more knowledge in investment. In early age, they would be willing to invest
in their preferred alternative investment. Second, Teachers is to be more aware that they
have to teach an investment subject for the students at early age so that the teens would
be knowledgeable enough in investment and it will serve as a guide for them to know the
reasons of teens why they are not investing will be solved. Third, the Department of
4
Education, where the findings of this study is helpful for them to implement subject for
teens in curriculum guide. Fourth, School as in institution which aims to produce skillful
and knowledgeable students who can be productive in terms of financial literacy.
The ideas presented can be used as a reference data in conducting new research or
testing the validity of other related findings. This study will also serve as their reference
that will give them background information or an overview.
Definition of Terms
The research is focused mainly on the perception of teens living in Basak Pardo,
Cebu City about investment. The researcher choose teens and their perception in
investment as a topic for the reason that the society needs to know about investment
especially teens because it can increase someone’s wealth and can help the economy as
well. The teens living in Basak, Pardo Cebu City will be participants of this research
study and the researchers chose only 10 participants to participate or to answer the
interview guide.
5
These research studies have a certain limitation that should be addressed. The time
of conducting this research is limited for making and finishing this within a semester
only. The scope will only happen in a small portion of barangay in Cebu City. And
lastly, the focus is only limited to teens’ perception and not their behavior in investing.
The reason for this is no other conducted study here in Philippines that mainly aim the
teens perception in investment.
Investment is one of the important tools to secure financial security and can boost
the growth of the economy (Wah et. Al, 2017). Investment as define by various authors,
Iyer & Bhaskar (2012) states that investment is a monetary asset purchased with the idea
that the asset will provide income.in the future. Investing is an act of risking a thing to
gain something in the future. According to Wah et.al (2017) through investment, a
person can have a lot of advantages such as financial security that can fulfill financial
goals, creation of wealth and fighting inflation.
While, in the study of Malik, M. (2008), investment was define as each thing a
person owns or possess, things that has a feature of an investment and acts as the capital
to gain or profit.
In addition, a study from outside the country stated that the financial position and
other financial factor can affect the financial position of the bank (Adam, 2014). Lastly,
Mutual funds that according to Aren & Aydemir (2015) have a small size and individuals
are not familiar with it. According to Beattie (2019), that one of the hardest type of
investment type is entrepreneurial because it does not only need money. Also emphasizes
that in an ownership business they provide an extreme bigger potential returns.
Savings and investing is two different actions. Investors Education (n.d) put
emphasis that people will start investing and saving to meet a specific goal in the future.
Savings and investing are sometime used interchangeably, but there are some differences
6
(Purdue Extensions, n.d). Savings means setting aside money from current income to
meet later expenses; this is a temporary holding pattern while investing is using money
to purchase something that you are expecting to provide a profit in the future. According
to Saving and Investing (n.d) savings are usually put into safest places, or products that
allows you to access to your money at any time.
In the book of Rutgers (n.d), savings is done for emergency funds and short term
goals, usually known to people but it has low rate of return. While investment is for long
term goals and capital growth of money over long period of time and has higher rate of
return. In the book First Steps to Investing (2011) stated that savings is the excess of
income over expenditure. Mostly savings lies in the savings bank; the money is very safe
and just earning a small rate of interest. According to Kaya (2010) the relationship
between savings and investment shows strong positive association.
According to the Investors Education (n.d), most people start investing and saving to
meet a specific goal. According to the studies of Ambedkar (2015), majority of Indians
dislike investing their funds and preferring to hold their cash with them, 33.7 % of the
total household of India saves. One of the most important reasons for people to save and
invest is to provide the funds for a comfortable future. Some literature proves that there
are some factors that affect teens to invest and their perception about investing.
In Turkey (Aren & Aydemir, 2015), Kenya (Kamau,2016) & Malaysia (Wah et. al.,
2016), investment behavior of teens and other individuals are being studied. Studies
reveal that there are many factors that affect the investment behavior of an individual;
Demographic (age, gender & educational level), psychological behavior, financial
Literacy, Cost of Living & Risk Tolerance.
It was stated that young people age less than 20 are not more interested in investing
as they are less aware of stock exchange (Sarwar & Afaf, 2016). Also in the study of
Aren and Aydemir (2015) shows that younger people tend to take risk than older people
in long term investment. Teens should not forget that it’s never too early to get young
people started on the path to building wealth (Investing Guide for Teens, n.d.). As an
explanation, elder people have fewer propensities in taking investment compared to
younger people.
Moreover, Lan, Q., Xiong, Q., He. L., & Ma. C., (2018) also states that older
investors are more inclined to have a cautious decision making style and states that to
have a better investment capability and consciousness. And also Korniotis and Alok (n.d)
stated that older people’s choices reflect to the greater knowledge they have. People with
7
positive vibes can affect their willingness to take risk and explore new procedures and
possibilities (Xing & Sun, 2017). In the study of Islamoglu, M. et. al., (2015) states that
people behaved and make decisions based on facts, rather than emotion for their own
benefit.
Furthermore, Aren & Aydemir (2015), states that compared to men, woman tend to
avoid risk financially. Collard (2009) also revealed that women tend to avoid risk than
man. Singh & Yadavs (2016) finds out that female gave importance to friends and family
advices and male analyze financial aspects. Other findings from Goldsmith (2006) that
states that men students knew more about investing than women students. The study
contradicted by Ambedkar (2015) that shows that there is no significant difference
between male and female towards investment awareness.
Kumar & Aurora (2013) states that people should and need investment education
either through TV, Internet and other media to enhance the level of knowledge of
investment decisions. This statement is supported by Sarwar and Afaf (2016) that
graduate people are more interested in investment and under matrics are least interested
in investing. Another study of Lorenciana (2018) that experiences of other traders
influenced and encouraged Cebuanos to engage investment.
Aren & Aydemir (2015) also find out that while educational level of individual
increases, the likelihood of choosing investment alternatives also increases. And
according to Goldsmith (2006), education improves both men and women subjective and
real knowledge in investments.
In the study of Aren S. & Aydemir, S. (2015), people that lacks of knowledge in
finances will make impossible and of this world decisions in terms of their own finances.
Another study of Lusardi, Mitchelle, and Curto (2010) stated that in United States young
people don’t have enough knowledge to make financial decisions.
8
According to Bhabha, Khan, Qureshi, Naeem and Khan (2014), they define the
financial literacy as a combination of awareness, attitude and behavior that necessarily
make sound in financial decisions and achieve individual financial well-being. The
researchers found out that financial literacy is one of the main factors affecting investors’
investment decision. Being financially literate means about knowing how to make a
smart decision for an individual to be financially secure the future and the one that
protects the assets that is built by you and your love ones (O’Connell,2019). According
to Bhabha, Khan, Qureshi, Naeem and Khan (2014) financial literacy as a combination
of awareness, attitude and behavior that necessarily make sound in financial decisions
and achieve individual financial well-being.
Risk Tolerance is one of the important elements in investing. Individual with less
risk tolerance might make wrong decision. In investor perspective, risk tolerance is the
level where investors take risk in losing money to do investment. Being an in investor
one main thing that works best is his or her capacity to take on risk. (Investing 101: A
Tutorial for Beginner investors, 2006).
Vlaer, Stewart and Charter (2008) findings showed that the more you understand
your risk tolerance, the better investment decisions will you make as well as the greater
risk aversion. Supported by Aren & Aydemir (2015) stated that in making decision
towards investment. Risk criteria are seen to be important. This study shows that people
who are not risk taker with low financial literacy choose alternative of foreign currency.
Thus, investing is very helpful to make an asset of an individual will have a higher
value. Investing is very crucial in the Philippines especially to youths because they are
not use to be an investor and they lack of financial knowledge. Investment decisions are
affected by several factors and sometimes investing and savings will be seen as the same.
This is the reason why savings and investment should be defined clearly. Making
investment decisions can help the youths or teens and also the economy in the process.

INTUITION
BRACKETING
First, Bracketing is an act and process to identify, keeping in check or any beliefs
about a phenomenon that is search. This part is important to isolate and separate a
phenomenon on what is already known.
Second, Intuition refers to the researcher to be immersed and focused in the study
phenomenon. This will result to understand a certain phenomenon. Then, the analysis of
the data that will be organize to develop themes. It can be used to describe the experience
of each participant or transcribing a process.
Lastly, Description is the last process. This is the time where the researchers will use
data to have a definition and description of the phenomena and will be communicated to
others.

Methodology
Research Design
Research Locale
This study will be conducted in Cebu City, mainly on Basak Pardo. Basak, Pardo is
one of the communities having a large scope of the teens population with its barangay
captain, Hon. Catalina Cabardo. This research locale is chosen because as the researcher
observed, the community is near the school of Don Vicente Memorial National High
School (DVRMNHS) where most teens living in Basak are enrolled. This school offers
both junior and senior high school that also offered mostly all the tracks and strands.
This school is located at Macopa Street Basak Pardo, Cebu City. This was lead by the
school principal, Mrs. Marilou Dela Cuesta.
Research Participant
This research study will have 10 teens as a participant that will answer the interview
guide. The participants should be; (1) a teen having an age of 13-19 years of age; (2)
He/she should have a little knowledge in investment; and (3) he/she should be interested
11
in investment. The participants are chosen by the researchers that will focus on teens and
investments.
Research Sampling
The researchers will have and interview ten (10) participants, according to Creswell
(1998) and Morse (1994) that in a phenomenological study you can have 5-25
participants or participants with atleast 6 participants. This participants will be
interviewed using purposive sampling by intentionally selecting individuals and also
citing a central phenomena. The participants will be interviewed until they will reach
their point of saturation. Purposive sampling is chosen because according to Creswell
(2012), a purposive sampling can have a more detailed understanding, that will give
useful information.
Research Instrument
The researchers used semi-structured interview guide questions. The interview guide
question will be constructed in two version, English and Visayan language for the benefit
and can be understandable by the participants. The content validity of the interview
guide question will be assess and approve by the experts, adviser, subject expect and our
research adviser. The applicability of the interview guide questions will be tested through
pilot testing with ten participant. Five teens and also five professionals that can validate
the used instrument. The interview guide question will be consisting of two parts- part A,
demographic information and Part B, the semi-structured questions.
First part will be preparatory permission. The researcher will make a letter to the
principal signed by the researchers, research teacher and to the school principal of Don
Vicente Rama Memorial National High School, Mrs. Marilou Dela Cuesta for the
approval to conduct a research in the school.
Second part will be making a human informed consent in a form of letter for the
agreement of the research participants to participate in the said study. In this way, the
researcher will ensure voluntary participation from the participants. The participants will
be informed that the interview will be voice recorded for documentation purposes as this
12
recordings will be transcribed and analyzed by the researchers. The researchers will
ensure confidentiality and privacy of their identity and also the results of this study will
be kept in the school.
Third part is where all participants will answer the semi- structured interview guide
question, will be approached in one on one interview. They will know the study and will
signed an informed consent before answering the questions. The participants will be
interviewed in a private place and they will be asked variety of questions specifically se
mi- structured interview.
Data Analysis
Colaizzi’s (1978) is used in this study, Colaizzi proposed a seven step process that
provides a rigorous analysis. This method depends on the persons accounts of
experiences, this maybe gathered in a face to face interview. This method will be
followed accordingly.
First familiarization, the researchers are going to familiarize themselves towards the
data, this can be achieved by reading all the participants transcribed answers several
times.
Second, identifying significant statements, this is where the researchers will identify
all statements in the accounts that are directly relevant to the phenomenon that was being
investigated.
Third, formulating meanings, this is where the researchers will identify meanings
that are closely relevant to the phenomenon that arise from the significant statements.
This is where the researchers must bracket the personal pre-suppositions to stick closely
to the phenomenon.
Fourth is clustering themes, the researchers will cluster the identified meanings unto
themes that are common to the data. Fifth is developing an exhausted description, the
researchers will give a description to the themes and incorporating all the themes
produced.
13
Sixth, producing the fundamental structure, the researcher will make the description
unto a short, dense statement that captures just those aspects that is essential towards the
phenomenon.
Ethical Considerations
First, autonomy is about respecting the rights of the participants which includes the
right to be free in deciding either to participate or withdraw anytime without
consequences (Orb,2001). Signing an informed consent is where the researchers will
inform the participant of all the features of the research that may affect his or willingness
to participate. Additional consent is for the teachers and principals. (SRCD Ethical
Consideration, 2007). According to Kumar (2005) that it is unethical to gather
information without the knowledge of the participants.
Then, beneficence which is doing good and prevent harm. The researcher should not
disregard the freedom of choice (Orb,2001). Anonimity should be practiced so that the
participant swill know that the researchers must not spread even a little amount of
information (SRCD Ethical Considerations, 2007).
Then, justice is about the equal share and fairness, this is about avoiding exploitation
and abuse of participants. The researcher should request for permission to use the data
and discuss it to the participants (Orb,2001). The research should have a mutual
responsibilities which talk about the agreement between the participants and the
researcher to avoid chaos. Reporting of results towards the participants are essential, they
should be informed towards the findings of the study. Confidentiality, where the
researcher should keep all private information gathered from the participants (SRCD
Ethical Consideration, 2007).
14
Rigors
In the present study, the investigator utilizes the Lamborg and Kirkevold (2003)
criteria to maintain the rigors of the study which compromised the concepts of fit, work,
relevance, and modifiability. The researchers will apply the appropriate tools in research
for it to be trustworthy and to meet the objectives and answers the study. According to
Atlas.ti (n.d), rigorous research most be both transparent and be able to answer in a
simple language. To improve the rigor of the study the researcher will consider
recommendation from professions, re-evaluation from the research teacher and re-
reading the themes that emerged in the study. The researcher will choose the participants
that are fit to the criteria that is needed.
Analysis
The teens and their thoughts, behaviors and feelings about investment are
emphasize in this study. Teenagers refers to a child between the age range between 13-
19. Investing is something a person has or possess that will serve as the capital to gain a
profit (Malik, 2008). In the Book of Rutgers (n.d), there are many investment alternative
that are offered to people.
Phenomenological research is the approach use in this study with the seven method
Collaizi proposed. This research aims to describe teens behavior, feelings and mindset
towards investment. Also, this study sought to determine the difference of savings and
investment to teens way of thinking.
There are ten (10) purposively selected teens that gives their full consent in
participating in this research study by answering a group of comprehensive and true
semi-structured on one-on-one interview on their thoughts about investment. The group
15
of participants are the expected teens the researcher wants to interview following the
research method but the participants are not equally divided to the educational level they
are currently in.
As you can see on Table 1 below, it shows the participants profile, the
participants age are between the range of 15-19 years of existence. The gender of the
participants are not equally divided for having four (4) males and six (6) females. The
participants educational attainment are not equally distributed for having eight (8) grade
12 students, one (1) grade 9 and college student. The participants allowances and
expenses are different in aspects, some have an allowance that is enough, some have a
higher expenses than their allowances and only a small percent of participants can save a
small amount in their allowances.
The table below depicts the general description of the study participants
demographic profile.
The themes emerged in this study from the data gathered answers the following
statement of the objectives stated on chapter 1. In studying teens and investment, there
are eighth (8) themes that emerged in the study. The first of these themes is concerned on
teens thoughts about investment that talks more on money growth in investment this will
be described as “Money leads to success”, under this theme are the following cluster
which includes (1.a) The growth of Money, (1.b) Having an investment can make us
successful, (1.c) It is good to invest than to save, (1.d)Long term process of investment,
and (1.e) Investing money to something that will run it.
The second theme that emerged in the study is about the conceptions of teens
about how savings work for them, in their simplest way of understanding, “Savings for
emergency Use”. This theme involves the following cluster, (2.a) Savings is better for
teens, (2.b) Savings is something left out from the money, (2.c) Money can be easily get,
and (2.d) Saving money for something you want sooner.
The third theme that emerged in this study focused on the difference of
investment and savings in the concepts teens thinks as of the moment. This theme is
called as the “Superiority of investment” and under this theme are six (6) clusters
namely, (3.a) Similarities of the process of savings and investment, (3.b)The difference
between savings and investment and the growth of value, and (3.c) Lesser growth of
money.
Investment have many alternatives that are not that known to teens. The fourth
theme emerged is “Investment Requirements” that focused on teens investment
alternative and the right choices to be made. This theme has the following clusters under.
(4.a) Prefer to have an investment in a business, (4.b) Teens invest to a well-known
company, (4.c)Bank investment is also known for teens, (4.d) Teens don’t have
experience in investment, (4.e) Right choice where to invest.
Some practices as a Filipino are followed by teens that affect the way they handle
finances that can affect their will in investing in a right investment alternatives. This
theme is “ Knowledge against practices”, this emerged theme has the following cluster
under, (7.a) Managing finances to be a financially literate individual, (7.b) Waiting for
opportunity, (7.c) Experience are the source to be financially literate, and (7.d) Spending
without thinking.
The last theme that emerged in this study is about teens on their risk tolerance,
“Hesitant risk taker”, this theme has the following sub-theme, (8.a) Afraid to take risk,
(8.b) Safety before risking, (8.c) Being a high risk tolerance individual, and (8.d) Small
risk in investment.
The growth of Money. When teens will be ask about what they know about
investment, teens mostly answers the basic concepts of investment. Investment as the
source of increase in wealth or the money growth. This concept of investment of teens are
more on the effect of the money when it will be invested in an alternative. The following
are the teens concept about investment:
“Kuan.. ang investment pareha sa akong ge ingon… na… long term sya… mo
taas imong kwarta tungod sa interest…(Transcript 1, Page 4, Line 106-107) “

“Para nako ang investment mao na sya ang long term kay mag tubo man imong

“Ahmm ang difference nila for investment kay long term siya in which mas mo
(Transcript 10,Page 1,Line 27-29)“
The teens concept about money investment growth focused on, investment has an
increased in interest that became a reason on the money to increase its value. Investment
according to Malik ( 2008), investment was define as the thing that has a feature of an
investment and acts as a capital to gain or profit. In the knowledge of teens the “money”
serves as the thing that can provide a gain which is due to the increase in the value of the
said asset. Investment can increase the value of the money of an individual or the effect
that will be advantage to teens if they will invest is the getting more from the exact
value. Iyer & Bhaskar (2012) states that investment is a monetary asset purchased with
the idea that the asset will provide income in the future. This monetary asset is the
19
Having an investment can make us successful. Two out of ten teens also has an
idea that investment can be the source that can make someone successful. Investment can
change the regular life of an individual. Investment can be the source on the teens
knowledge to be acquired in investment. It can evolve someone in a better version of
themselves and for them to have a feeling of goodness inside of them. The following
statement that will be mentioned below are from the teens gathered interview answer:
“You success.. it will be going to.. make you much richer..(Transcript 3,Page
1,Line 17-18)”
“That would be great! Especially when you invested in a known project.. and you
know that its going to bloomed into something that would be successful before you
invest.(Transcript 3,Page 1,Line 31-33)”
“ I don’t think if I wok tomorrow and someday my money will just .. go.. ahmm…
you know.. most of the time we expense.. more expenses in our life.. so many expenses
and we should have savings.. not just savings but invest.. yeah..(Transcript 3,Page 2,Line
56-59)”
“Ohh.. investment biya.. ma pun an.. pun an ang unsa nga naa ka ba… IT CAN
CHANGE YOUR LIFE..(Transcript 4,Page 2,Line 58-59)”
“Kuan Challenging siya kay need jud nimo I work out ..(Transcript 4,Page
2,Line 61)”
“Lingaw…Tungod sa amoa ba… maka meet man gud ko og laing taw ba… nya
madagdagan pa akong kwarta..(Transcript 4,Page 2,Line 63-64)”
Both teen has a redundant answers that only have one thought, and that is
investment can be the source for someone to be successful. This success is due to an
increase n wealth and to be secured financially. According to Wah et.al(2017)
investment can make a person to have a lot of advantages such as financial security that
can fulfill financial goals, creation of wealth and fighting inflation.
It is good to invest than to save. Teens have an idea that investing money is good
than just saving it. A teen thought that in investment it can be the source and can be a
part of the hobby and it can benefit them. A teen also stated that investment is much
preferable compared to savings because it can make the money grow bigger. And
investing is preferred by teens than investing their money.
20

cellphone no matter where they go..(Transcript 3,Page 2,Line 36-37)”
“so nindot kayna sa imohang feeling kay mudako man imohang kwarta
(Transcript 7,Page 2,Line 64-65)”
“Oh mas nindot ang investment kaysa mag save jud (Transcript 7,Page 3,Line
75)“
Investment is much preferable compared to savings because it can make the
money grow bigger. Investors Education (n.d) put an emphasis that investment and
saving will start due to people want to achieve a specific goal in the future. But
investment is better than savings is the viewpoint of the teens due to the benefits it can
give in the future.
“ahmmm. Kuan.. para nako sa, ang investment kay taas-taas syang process
(Transcript 1, Page 2, Line 41)”
“Investment murag nagkasaka imong kwarta ana.. in a long term manner… nya
(Transcript 1, Page 2, Line 53-55) “
“Para nako ang investment mao na sya ang long term kay mag tubo man imong
kwarta like sa akong gi ingon nila kanang like naa jud kay makuha bisag kanos a then
imong gi save, mao rapod imonng makuha. (transcript 8, page 2, line 45-48)”
“kay long term siya in which mas mo doble pa sad imong money while ang
(Transcript 10,Page 1,Line 27-29) “
Teens idea about investment proves the statement on chapter 2. According to the
Book of Rutgers (n.d), investment is for a long term goal and the capital growth of
money over long period of time and has a higher rate of return. Investing is a long
process that needs patience for the great benefit that can be get by the one who invest.
Investing money to something that will run it. Investment will not run in
simple form. Investment cant be done alone and within the self. Investment is finding the
21
right alternative that can be trusted in keeping that monetary asset and evolve it into
something valuable. Teens have an idea about investment that some entity will run and
increase the worth of their asset. The statements below will prove about this cluster
theme;
“Sa investnent mao na syay kanang mura ganig imong gi kuan sa usa ka... For
example kanang nag kuan ka sa its either sa banko or dili mo.... Duha man na ka kuan
sa banko or ddto sa usa ka business or a company(Transcript 6,Page 1,Line 24-26) “
“Akong nahibaw an sa investment kay mo kuan ka mo murag ikuan nimo imong
money sa kuan ba imo banang ikuan run mura ganing ipatuyok imong kwarta kanang
ihatag imong kwarta dha nga unsa bana bank bana run sample bank imong ihatag dra
naa gud nay ila manang ihatag sa mga negosyante ba ila manang ipa loan ba dha
mutuyok na imong kwarta naa na silay naa nay interest.(Transcript 7,Page 1,Line 26-
30)”
“Yes familiar ko sa mga bangko nga ni invest. (transcript 8, page 2, line 35)”
“Imong i invest imong money sa isa ka business.. (Transcript 9,Page 1,Line 28)”
Investment has many types of alternatives (Abraham, 2009) talks about real
estate investment and (Sarwar & Afaf,2016) talks about stock exchange which is similar
to the idea of teens putting an asset in a company which is like stock exchange or the
buying or selling stocks. Another researcher stated about foreign currency and mutual
fund (Aren & Aydemir, 2015). And according to Gale (2008) stated about bank deposits
which is considered as an investment in a term, the bank will receive deposits from
individual either to loan or a purchased. Teens that are interviewed in this study are more
familiar to bank and company or stock investment. Teens also know that creating a
business is a part of investing a wealth.
This knowledge of teens proves that even in a young age they have a little
knowledge about investment either about the growth of money, the process, where to put
the money and the benefits in investment.
This theme shows the knowledge and practices of teens in terms of saving money.
Based on their answers they know what savings is all about, but based on result only
small percent of teens that have savings.
Savings is better for teens. Teens are asked about what they know in savings
and stated that savings are more convenient for them. They are more familiar to savings
compared in investment.
Murag wala man gyud koy idea anang investment.. murag savings raman
gyud…(Transcript 1, Page 2, Line 39)”
“Savings..Didto ra gehapon.. sa among room .. sa among skwelahan ba kay..
classmate ra gani namo kong unsay masobra sa bawn mao nalay isave.. (Transcript 1,
Page 3, Line 63-66)”
“Wala man.. naa koy savings sa usa ka cooperative pero wala koy investment..
(Transcript 2, Page 2, Line, 62)”
“Pwedi rasad nga mas better ang investment pero kay bata paman gud so savings
pa madali dali. (Transcript 5,Page 2,Line 54-55)”
“Naa gatigom ko (transcript 8, page 2, line 52)”
Savings is something left out from the money. Teens are also asked about how
they could define savings and answered that it is something left out from your daily
allowances or excess money left out from day to day expenses.
In the book First Steps to Investing (2011) stated that savings is the excess of
income over expenditure. Mostly savings lies in the savings bank; the money is very safe
and just earning a small rate of interest. This is what teens understand in talking about
savings.
Money can be easily got. When having a savings it’s an easy way process from
which individuals can easily get or withdraw their money back. Especially it’s a self-
savings and they can easily withdraw it if they want to if they want to use it.
“Sa savings man gud pwede nimo makuhaan kanus a ka ganahan (Transcript 1,
Page 3, Line 60)”
“Ang savings kay ma kuhakuhaan nimo.. Basin kanus-a ba.. bsin kanus a nimo
ganahan kuhaan. (Transcript 2, Page 2, Line, 42-44)”
“Kuan ang savings para nako kay kuan kanang makuha gani nimo kung naa kay
kung kinahanglan ingun ana(Transcript 7,Page 2,Line 34-35)”
“Kay usahay mag save raman na sa kuan gud.. Self lang ba.. Niya naa say bank..
Pero.. If savings.. Makakuha raman.. Ka.. As long as.. Naa kay kwarta pa..(Transcript
7,Page 2,Line 37-38)”
According to Saving and Investing (n.d) savings are usually put into safest places, or
products that allows you to access to your money at any time. The result teens are more
into savings because in case of emergency they can easily withdraw their money.
Saving money for something you want sooner. Another understanding of teens
about savings is they are saving money for something they want to get. Like if they want
to buy something, they intentionally save for it.
“Sa savings mura kag.. murag ng save ka og money paras imong future
ba…(Transcript 1, Page 2, Line 44-45)”
“Saving is the best way to save.. it is a win-win situation for you to have an income
sooner (Transcript 3,Page 1,Line 20-21)”
“Maam, para nako maam, ang savings kay for example naa kay ebutang lang nato
bag, niya ganahan kay ka paliton. So imo siyang gitiguman para sooner or later imo na
siyang mapalit. Mao rana akong pagsabot sa savings. (transcript 8, page 2, line 38-40)”
24
“Wala ra, like akong gisulti ganina, kung naa koy ganahan paliton naa koy makuot.
(transcript 8, page 2, line 54)”
Savings is something left or not spent on current expenditures. Teens are saving
because they don’t know what might happen in the future, and it should be paid for
unexpected events or emergencies. According to Investors Education (n.d) people start to
invest in order to meet specific goals.
Similarities of the process of savings and investment. Teens were asked about
what are the differences between savings and investment. They answered that both have
somewhat a slight connection with each other on its process. Both deals on keeping
money and can make money increase in any amount and value.
“Pwede rsad peru murag naa silay connection(Trnscript 5,Page 2,Line 45)”
“Ay para nako preha preha naman ang savings ug investment(Transcript 6,Page
2,Line 42)”
“Wala ra, like akong gisulti ganina, kung naa koy ganahan paliton naa koy makuot.
(transcript 8, page 2, line 54)”
Savings is just simply about idle cash while investment helps funds to grow over
a period of time. Teens stated that investment and savings have somewhat similar with
each other. It is because both entities deal with the process of money. In savings one can
easily meet their short term needs, but to meet a long term goals one must have to make
investments. According to Kaya (2010) the relationship between savings and investment
shows strong positive association
The difference between savings and investment and the growth of value. This
cluster showcases how teens differentiate savings and investment. Teens stated that
investment is a long term processing of money and there is a greater chance that the
money will grow bigger compared to savings. While in savings is just a short term
process. For them, investment is to put the money in a bank while saving is for self-use.
25
“Ang savings man gud kay mo taas sya if imo dunghagan sad.. while ang
investment.. mo taas sya.. pero di naka kailangan sige og puno og kwarta..(Transcript 1,
Page 2, Line 47-48)”
“Investment murag nagkasaka imong kwarta ana.. in a long term manner… nya ang
“Ang savings is murag ge save jud nimo imong kwarta. While sa investment
murag..Oh ga save ka pru imong.... Imo sad gipadako ang imong investment
nimo(Transcript 5,Page 2,Line 45-50)”
“Ang investment man gud kay more on.. Kuan siya.. Business.. Banks.. Kanang ing
ana ba.. Niya di na nimo mahilabtan ba.. Niya ang savings.. Kuan..
pay porsyento nga naa pay mubalik ba mura pag mubalik imong kwarta nga kadtung
imong gikuan..Oo di mo tubo if savings(Transcript 7,Page 2,Line 42-47)”
“…then ang savings kay mao na sya ang short term kay stable rman imong kwarta
kung pila imong gi save, mao rapod imonng makuha. (transcript 8, page 2, line 45-48)”
“savings... sa investment kay imong money man gud once nimo i save is mas mo
kung unsa imong gi kuan..(Transcript 9,Page 2,Line 32)”
“while savings kay it’s a short term in which there is no need, wala siyay needed
nga process in order for you to have, to save money (Transcript 10,Page 1,Line 24-25)”
Based on the result this was being supported by the study in Investors Education
(n.d) that put emphasis that people will start investing and saving to meet a specific goal
in the future. Savings and investing are sometimes have similarities, but there are some
differences according to (Purdue Extensions, n.d). Savings means setting aside money
from current income to meet later expenses; this is a temporary holding pattern while
investing is using money to purchase something that you are expecting to provide a
26
profit in the future. In the study of Wah et. al (2017) through investment, a person can
have a lot of advantages such as financial security that can fulfill financial goals, creation
of wealth and fighting inflation.
Less growth of money. The result on what teens could say about savings and
answered that savings can give lesser growth of money. Mostly savings in a bank gives
lesser interest on the growth money. For teens they also stated that their money in
savings is stable.
“Gamay rasad noon ang tubo.. centavos ra ba.. tighatagan mi og basig pila ra..
every month ba.. tag 50.. usahay tag 20.. ingon ana ra gud (Transcript 2, Page 2, Line,
65-66)”
“If kung sa bangko nimo ibutang gamay raman Interest ana gud..(Transcript
4,Page 2,Line 35-36)”
“Para nako ang investment mao na sya ang long term kay mag tubo man imong
kwarta like sa akong gi ingon nila kanang like naa jud kay makuha bisag kanos a then
imong gi save, mao rapod imonng makuha. (transcript 8, page 2, line 45-48)”
“while savings kay it’s a short term in which there is no need, wala siyay needed
nga process in order for you to have, to save money (Transcript 10,Page 1,Line 24-25)”
“ ang savings kay short term siya pero stagnant ra imong money dili siya mo doble.
(Transcript 10,Page 1,Line 27-29) “
In the Book of Rutgers (n.d) savings are short-term goals, it is usually known to
people but has low rate of return. Teens already know that savings are just for their
emergent or short term needs. Money in savings are stagnant and wouldn’t grow much
bigger compared to investing.
This theme talks that in investment teens are giving a requirement before they
will enter and join it. Requirements on their preferred type of investment and the reason
on choosing that investment.
This teens benefited to the results of the investment type they joined. This type of
investment is also a part of an ownership investment (Beattie, 2019). This companies are
two different company, the first one bought a stock and let his money grow while the
other buy products and became a part of the company and find buyers.
Bank investment is also known for teens. Teens also prefer to invest in a bank
with a view to receive a greater amount and return. Teens prefer this type of investment
because of thinking that this type of investment is better than other type of investment.
Bank investment is trusting an individuals asset to a trusted bank that will let loan
makers to borrow money.
“Yes familiar ko sa mga bangko nga ni invest. (transcript 8, page 2, line 35)”
“Banko ko mo invest. (transcript 8, page 2, line 56)”
Teens don’t have experience in investment. Teens in a very young age don’t
have any experience in investment but want to have an experience and try it. Teens
having no experience of investment is due on lacking of knowledge on where and how to
invest their money.
“Wala pa(Transcript 5,Page 2,Line 57)”
“Wala..Investment nga dako og kuan, rate sa interest (Transcript 7,Page 2,Line
49-51) “
“Wala raba (transcript 8, page 2, line50)”
“wala pasad…(Transcript 9,Page 2,Line 53)”
“Wala raba (Transcript 10,Page 1,Line 31)”
29
Lan, Q., Xiong, Q., He. L., & Ma. C., (2018) also states that older investors are
more inclined to have a cautious decision making style and states that to have a better
investment capability and consciousness. This means that it is true that because the teens
are on the age range of 13-19 they are not that the best in making decision in investment
especially that they don’t have a experience on it and don’t have the knowledge. Having
an experience can help the teens to strengthen the investment decision they can make in
the future.
Right choice where to invest. In investing an individual should make the right
choice to be able to have a better consequence that the individual can feel. Investment
should be reviewed and should be studied deeply before trying. Some teens prefer to
have an investment that they already had an experience especially if it gives them a
control. If teens will invest they prefer to have an investment that give them a higher
advantage than other.
“Business lang guro ko.. kay sauna.. katong bata pami nakasugod man sad mi og
business ba.. maninda og softdrinks ba… niya naa nakoy experience ana.. nya dili sad
sya kaayo risky kay ako may mag gunit sa akong kwarta… (Transcript 2, Page 3, Line
73-75)”
“So kung gnhan ko. . Mas gnhan ko kanang mga bigger gani siya nga
kanang....Oo . Company ba.. Na nag offer sad og dako.. Og return.. Og kanang .. Ohh..
Interest ba..(Transcript 6,Page 2 ,Line 55-60)”
Teens thinking of having an investment should first learn the basic about
investment before trying. Teens should not forget that it’s never too early to get young
people started on the path to building wealth (Lemke, 2019.). Teens should first to know
on the importance of the value of money to have another action to be better. Before the
teens make a business they should first to have a source of the money and know the
background.
investment or in a company. And it is the one reason that can afraid to teens to invest.
Majority of their feelings is feel secured instead of feel afraid because they dont think
that some of the company’s go down or bankrupt of a company.
“Murag para nako secure naka nga kanang.. murag malipay sad ta kay ing -ana
naa sad tay matiguman…(Transcript 1, Page 3, Line 88-89)”
“Kanang ma secure nako siya or something ba (Transcript 5,Page 3,Line 91)”
“Pwede ramn sad pero ma hog syag savings na kay invest is invest. So feel jud
nako nga kailangan jud nako e invest pra wala na gani koy hunahunaon(Transcript
5,Page 3,Line 88-89)
“Dependi ra kung kuan kaya imong gi invest kay dili ka scamon ba ingun ana ba
nindot ang kuan ba... (Transcript 7,Page 2,Line 61-62) “
“Ma secure ka secure sa investment.. (Transcript 7,Page 2,Line 67) “
“Ay di diay. Before ko mo invest, ako man jud siguruduon kung safe na sya nga
banko. (transcript 8, page 2, line 66)”
“Secure ko kay nisalig man ko nga mo invest ko. (transcript 8, page 2, line 64)”
In investing money, security is the important thing to know due to scam. One
of the reason also on being scared to invest is being low knowledge or teens don’t have
knowledge enough in investment. But, when they are financial literate and have a little
knowledge about investment, they are willing to invest but if they are investing, they
make sure that the place where did they invest is already known and their advantages and
disadvantages about it.
“Para nako dili secure.. murag dili ko katuo ba kay naa naman guy mga
scammer (Transcript 1, Page 3, Line 76-77)“
“Dili kay all.. (Transcript 2, Page 3, Line 100)”
“Ohh! Labaw n naa namay.. scam.. karon.. grabe na kaayo ba.. niya mangilad
na tao.. lisod man labi na karon.. karong panahona (Transcript 2, Page 3, Line 88-89 )”
“Usahay ma feel nakoo na murag kuan.. naa man gyud nang hadlok.. di man
gyud na mawala (Transcript 2, Page 3, Line 85-86 )”
“Kung oh.. Kung tinuod ba nga dili scam ilang gipanulti.(Transcript 5,Page
4,Line 103)“
“Kanang.. MahaDlok ba.. Kay dapat usa ko mo invest, siguruduon sad jud nako

Money security. According to teens, they feel secure when they in invest their
money but they don’t even know that some bank investment got bankrupt. They just
think that in investment, their money grow and grow. They always look for advantages
of it but they don’t think the disadvantages. Teens also stated that when they don’t have
enough knowledge about investment. It is good idea that they might think first before
they act.
Investing can provide teens wants and needs. Investing can provide teens
wants and needs because the asset they invest is not stable, it grow bigger because of
interest in different alternative investment. Teens want to invest because they believe that
their money grow bigger and so that teens can now buy and afford their wants and needs
in their life.
“Kay kung imo ranang gastoon diman gud ka madato. Ingun ana gud kung
imong mindset ra ba kay kuan kung naa kay na kay kwarta gasto dapat kung naa kay
kwarta kay I invest na nimo kay kuan mudako imong kwarta nya ma use nimo kuanh
example magtukod bakag business run ingun ana ba (Transcript 7,Page 3,Line 70-73)”
“That would be great! And ahhmm and I recomment it to all.. teens.. to be
educated in investment especially now.. mellinials today.. most of the time they don’t
know whats the real value of..(Transcript 3,Page 2,Line 45-47)”
“Tungod na practice naman na nako sa karon… labi na na nisulod ko ani nga
investment(Transcript 4,Page 4,Line 101-102)”
The willingness to have an investment.. Investment can make your asset doble
thats why teens are willing to invest. Other teens are willing to invest but they don’t have
a capital to start it. Others are willing to invest because it can make them happy and they
have something to wait for in the near future. Teens are more prefer to have an
investment rather than to save because savings is done for emergency funds and short
term goal ( Rutgers, n.d)
“Oh mas better nga mo invest nalang ka(Transcript 4,Page 2,Line 46)”
33
“Kuan imong kuan imong money dayun naa nay interest nya naay kuan ma nay
interest naa kay ma get ba more that sa money nga imong gi invest ba, kana more than
sa money nga imong nahatag(Transcript 7,Page 3,Line 84-86) “
Teens statements are the same to what the global investor study (2017) stated that
88% of people feel the need to improve their investment knowledge in at least one area.
Teens are one of those 88% of people because in a very young age, the teens know that
they lack of knowledge and wanting to improve it and learn more about investment.
Eager to improve their knowledge can be a source that teens are curious about it and
some have a small percent on wanting to try it.
“Mas maayo siya para mas mapa, naa pakoy makat unan, madaghan pa akong
knowledge dayun mas nakabaw pako unsay ang advantages og mga benefits sa kung mo
invest ka…(Transcript 9,Page 3,Line 86-88)”
Limitation of acquired knowledge. This cluster showed that teens have low
level of knowledge in investment. They only understand that it deals with money but still
admit that what they know is just an overview. This the factor why teens don’t engage in
investment because of not being knowledgeable enough in investment. Other statement
states that their knowledge is limited its because investment is not the focus of their
lessons as a student. teens also don’t know about any investment alternatives.
“Wala man gud koy dako kaayo na knowledge about ana (Transcript 1, Page 4,
Line 100)”
“Ang investment man gud.. daghan sya og klase.. pero ang uban kay dili known sa
tanan ba.. (Transcript 1, Page 4, Line 103-104)”
“Pero bag o ko mo suway kailangan.. kailangan pa gyud na makahibaw ko pag
maayo ba..(Transcript 1, Page 4, Line 115-116)”
“Wala man gyud koy… koy idea ana… nga unsa pa ang lain na investment type
(Transcript 2, Page 3, Line 69)”
“Kapoy man gyud sya.. kapoy man gud na.. daghan na kaayo ba..Naa gyud na
tanan nga kapoy… (Transcript 2, Page 4, Line 121 & 124 )”
“Gamay pa (Transcript 2, Page 4, Line 129 )”
“Tungod man gud na nga wala gyud na… ge focus ba.. ge focusan o tudlo..
(Transcript 2, Page 5, Line 140)”
“30 ra sad akong knowledge.. gamay gyud kaayo (Transcript 2, Page 5, Line 148)”
“Actually gamay ra..(Transcript 4,Page 3,Line 85)”
“Gamay raman gud akong knowledge ba..(Transcript 6,Page 1,Line 30-31)”
“I pirme lang ta magpagawas ug kwarta wothout knowing nga kato diay ay sobra
“Taas pero dili gyud sya totally..(Transcript 6,Page 3,Line 93)”

According to the study of Tiogson (2017) studies revealed that Filipinos are not
educated enough to any various investment tools and having low of income makes
investing impossible. Which cleraly states that money is also a hindrance why teens
don’t engage in investment. Mostly teens don’t have income or big amount of amount of
money to invest, and some of them are still depending on parents. Another study of
Lusardi, Mitchelle, and Curto (2010) stated that in United States young people don’t
have enough knowledge to make financial decisions.
“Kong knowledge sa investment kay gamay ra man gyud na… ABM ko… nadiscuss
na hinuon pero… pero wala na dig pa og maayo ba (Transcript 1, Page 4, Line 102-

you just trust yourself.. (Transcript 3,Page 2,Line 87-88)”
“Don’t be so aggressive.. don’t be so aggressive.. don’t let you rush things.. just like
be patient and go with the flow..(Transcript 3,Page 2,Line 52-53)”
37
“First you must research research and research…(Transcript 3,Page 1,Line 33)
“Pero mas maayo man gud if na-experience na nimo kay experience is mas makat-

“Akong knowledge kay naka unan nako.. mas pa.. didto sa akong business nga ge

“So, para nako akong nakat onan sa investnent (Transcript 6,Page 1,Line 24)”
“Ohhh ohhh.. Ka familiar noon ko.. Kay mao man na ang murag na storya storyaan

“Tungod man gud na nga ang uban ba.. Kanang.. Ge discuss.. Familiar ba. Pero di

There are experts stated that having an internet connection can help the growth of
an investors. This is one of the factor from which individuals can get information or do
some research about their investments. Teens stated that experience are the best teacher
and also getting information from other individual could be a good help.
High Interest in investment. the result showed that teens are highly interested in
investment. Because of having low knowledge they are more interested to learn about it.
Knowing that in investment, it can make a big changes in money growth they are also
willing to try to engage in investment.
Ganahan gyud ko.. Og ingon ana ba.. Business..(Transcript 6,Page 4,Line 100-102)”

Little interest as of the moment. Aside from that there is also a small percent of
teens that have low level of interest in investment. Teens are doubting on what might
happen if they will try investing. Other reason showed that because of having low
knowledge they also have low level of interest in investment. It sums up that teens are
not yet ready to invest today, maybe in the future.

In the study of Aren S. & Aydemir, S. (2015), people that lacks of knowledge in
finances will make impossible and of this world decisions in terms of their own finances.
Which is connected to teens level of interest in investment. Mostly teens doesnt care
about their expenses. Another reason of being not interested is having a low level of
knowledge. According to the global investor study (2017), 88% of people feel the need
to improve their investment knowledge in at least one. Another studies that supports is
according from Sarwar and Afaf (2016) that conducted a study on Pakistan with 254
respondents states that young people age less than 20 are not more interested in investing
as they are less aware of stock exchange.

mapalit nako ang ganahan nga butang. (transcript 8, page 2, line 101)”

Being financially literate means about knowing how to make a smart decision for
an individual to be financially secure I the future and the one that protects the assets that
is build by you and your love ones (O’Connell,2019). from the statement of O’Connell
that proves that some teens have a different way of looking on being financially literate
because some thinks that if their allowance is enough for the whole week means that they
are financial literate, not minding on having a saving for the future. Maybe some teens
know how to save but for their enjoyment and wants to be satisfy.
Waiting for opportunity. Teens are always waiting for opportunity before they
will try and grab the chance to enter in a investment alternative. Waiting a chance before
trying is not a good practice because to acquire wealth an individual should not wait but
at least they will seek to find the big opportunity that they can see. Waiting can be the
chance to seek an investment alternative. The statements below proves that teens will
surely invest if given a chance and opportunity.
Experience are the source to be financially literate. Teens stated that being
financially literate for them is due to the experience they had been and evolve them to
what they are today. Experience is a good teacher in this sense. Some teens became a
financial literate individual because as a kid they are already thought by their parents on
how to use money in the right way and how to balance it to keep something out from it.
Some teens became literate due to experiencing a situation in need of finances, in that
situation it teaches the individual the importance of balancing and having a financial
security.
41
“I am so illiterate financially and then suddenly I want to buy it and I just.. I just
realize that I need to do in my life without leaving my hobbies behind.. and thats why I
came up with to this ahmm.. I invested in a.. suitable to me..(Transcript 3,Page 2,Line
61-64)”
“Yes, kay bata palang ko murag gi kuan naman kos akong mama gud (Transcript

According to Bhabha, Khan, Qureshi, Naeem and Khan (2014) financial literacy
as a combination of awareness, attitude and behavior that necessarily make sound in
financial decisions and achieve individual financial well-being. The researchers found
out that financial literacy is one of the main factors affecting investors investment
decision. Out of ten teens only two have that experience that made them a financially
literate individual, individuals that want to achieve better in their finances. This is one of
the reason why teens are not unto making investment decisions.
Spending without thinking. The worst aspect teens have practiced is the
spending pattern that they have. Mostly teens spend without a rationale or without a
certain objective to be better the only thing that revolves to their mind is just for the sake
to be satisfied. Mostly teens wants to be independent in handling their finances and its a
good practice but unfortunately they still don’t know the right way on handling it.
“Kay if naa nimo gud.. mahurot lang ba.. walay padulngan.. (Transcript 2, Page
3, Line 98 )”
In the study of Aren S. & Aydemir, S. (2015), people that lacks of knowledge in
finances will make impossible and out of this world decisions in terms of their own
finances. Teens on not being financially literate is one of the reason why they cant even
save a single centavo just like what Aren & Aydemir stated above. If teens don’t even
know how to handle their finances, how much more if finding the best investment
alternative to be financially secured.
Safety before risking. The reason why teens don’t engage in investment is
because of having a low level of risk tolerance. Mostly teens are much aware about
issues on investment like failure or scam. That is why they are afraid, and they want to
make it sure first before investing their money.
“Para nako dili secure.. murag dili ko katuo ba kay naa naman guy mga
scammer (Transcript 1, Page 3, Line 76-77)”
“Ohh! Labaw n naa namay.. scam.. karon.. grabe na kaayo ba.. niya mangilad

“Ohhh like kung ganahan kos investment willing gyud ko mo risk(Transcript

Being an in investor one main thing that works best is his or her capacity to take
on risk. (Investopedia, 2006). This shows that teens are not really ready for investment
because of having low capacity of taking risk. Having a high risk tolerance depends on
the peoples’ situation, considering teens that have trust issues on scam and failures of
their money.
43
Being a high risk tolerance individual. There are teens claimed they are risk
takers but only in savings. They also know that in having investment being a risk a taker
is very important and having a positive mind as one of the characteristic as an investors.
“Wala, kay businessman man ka business woman dapat man gyud ka mo risk.
Risk taker biya sila dapat, dapat dika mahadlok kay way negosyante mga negative ang
ge set diba positive gyud na.(Transcript 4,Page 4,Line 131-133)”
“Mo take risk para kuan ma kung ibutang nako sa percent mga 90(Transcript
7Page 4,Line 114)”
“kuan.. Mas taas man gyud ko og risk.. Kay kailangan man sad sya(Transcript
7,Page 4,Line 118)”
Study results that in Malaysia, the higher risk tolerance of an investor; the greater
chances will invest as well as receive greater returns. There are past studies ( Vlaer,
Stewart and Charter, 2008) shows that risk tolerance has a positive effect towards the
propensity on investment. Their findings showed that the more you understand your risk
tolerance, the better investment decisions will you make as well as the greater risk
aversion. This could answer that teens are better to invest because they have high risk
tolerance.
People with low level of risk tolerance might have the tendency of making wrong
decisions. According to Aren & Aydemir (2015) states that in making decision towards
investment, risk criteria is seen to be important. This study shows that people who are
not risk taker with low financial literacy choose alternative of foreign currency. Mostly
teens have higher risk in savings because they know already about it compared to
savings.
In this chapter, the findings of the research, the process and the problems
encountered, the answered objectives, the recommendation, and the personal reflection
of the researchers will be generalized.
The objectives of this study are answered by the following themes that emerged that
will be stated below. In terms of the first research objective about teens perception in
investment, they have the idea that investment can increase the growth of money that
will lead to success in life. In the second research objective about teens concept on the
difference of investment and saving, investment is superior and better than the latter
because it can have a greater increase in money. In the third objective about teens
preferred investment alternative, even most teens don’t have an investment yet their
preferred investment alternative revolves to their wants and required characteristic in
investment which is a higher return like business, company and bank.
In the fourth objective about their feelings of willingness and interest in investment
education results to having an unhindered willingness to be educated in investment. The
last objective which is about the reasons of teens on not engaging themselves in
investment is due to having practices that is against their knowledge and to their
hesitation to take risk.
The study focuses on teens and their concepts, thinking, behaviors and feelings
towards investment. The study has eighth (8) emerged theme from the gathered data of
45
the answers of the purposively chosen participants with an age range between 13-19
years old. This themes will be discusses comprehensively and briefly below;
1. In investment, money leads to success which means that investment is one of the
source for someone to increase their wealth due to the growth of money it can provide.
Investment is a long process but much better than just merely saving money by yourself.
Investment can make someone feel satisfaction, enjoyment and successful especially
nothing is permanent in this world. Money leads to success but with a right choice to
make, the right alternative to go that can make money grow.
3. Between the two aspect which is investment and savings. The superiority of
investment is about the concept of investment is much better than savings. Investment
and savings are quiet similar and teens see investment as an action happen after saving
the money. The two concept maybe similar but investment is better and superior than
savings especially in the money growth value. In savings, money will just stay stable
while investment increases the value of money invested.
5. Teens don’t have really the idea about investment, the reason of having an
“unexplored security” in that aspect. In investment, security is very important to be felt
especially that scams and fraud are trendy nowadays. Teens have an unexplored security
and the feel of fear or being afraid on trying investment due to having no great
knowledge about investment, causing them on not having a sure choice. Investment can
46
provide the needs and wants of teens but it involves a great amount of money. The teens
are willing to try and explore investment but the security of their money should be
assured by that certain alternative. The lacking of knowledge is the one hinders that
exploration of security of teens.
6. Teens are a great learners, as what the researchers had observed from the
participants. The teens have a small knowledge acquired from different sources. Some
teens acquired knowledge from schools, research and even stories around them. But the
problem of that knowledge are all limited and not full that can help them in making
investment decisions. But that lacking of knowledge doesn’t stop teens to feel a great
interest to try and enter investment. Maybe some feel that this age range are not the right
time but they are still willing to enter when they feel that the time will be right. Teens
have this unhindered willingness to be educated in investment. Teens want to learn
more about investment of they will be given a chance. They feel lucky to acquire
knowledge because its an opportunity for them. It can be the source for them to have
more opportunity to invest.
7. Filipinos have many practices that are passed from generation to generation,
apparently Filipino teens also acquire that practices that hinders the true knowledge they
should acquire (Knowledge against Practices). Teens are thought to be financially
literate individual. Experiences in their surrounding and teachings of parents are some
sources of that. But for teens being financially literate is just merely living for a day
with a thinking of having just enough allowances, they mostly wont think of keeping
even just a little bit of money that was given to them. Being financially literate individual
is to be financially secured in the future. Teens have this practice of waiting of
opportunity without a thinking of finding it. Teens is merely spending without thinking
for tomorrow especially they are dependent to the finances of their parents.
8. Teens are a hesitant risk taker especially to things they don’t have knowledge.
In investment having a high risk tolerance is needed to have a greater consequences of
choices. The problem of teens are only Three out of ten teens are high risk taker. Most
teens have a small risk tolerance in investment due to having a fear on trying investment.
Teens have the tendency to feel safe and secured before making some decisions.
with the recording of the answers or the interview. There are some points that researchers
misunderstood what the participants have said because of the recorder. Another problem
came up when we tend to realize that there are questions we forgot to ask in some
participants. As a result, this is a failure of lacking some information that must be needed
in our research.
It was a great pressure and challenged for us because we made this research only
in four months. In gathering our ten (10) participants, we only had short time because
most of them are busy and in a hurry. Another problem we encountered during the
interview when the participants can’t easily understand or catch up our thrown questions.
Luckily, all the participants we had are close to us and it’s easy to approach them.
The biggest problem we had encountered when we reached in analyzing the data
is about the methods we used to analyze the data. We spent almost a week of overnight
in analyzing the data, it’s because don’t really understand the methods we used. Aside
from that the methods we used had many processes in order to analyze data. That’s why
it would really take time to make our chapter four (4). These experiences would be a
useful addition to future studies.
The research study about teens and their behavior towards investment is very limited
especially within the concepts of Filipino teens as investors. The results and findings of
this study is very much helpful to the future researchers that can serve as a guide for
them to know about the aspect of this part. It can be their source for their study. Aside
from the future researcher, the study can help other individuals. Teens and the
participants can make this research study as a guide for them to improve and reflect as an
individual.
As what the research study finding stated, the teens are very willing to acquire
knowledge in investment. That is the reason that the researchers are recommending to
the DepEd officials to implement an investment subject in the curriculum. And for the
future researchers to create either a quantitative or qualitative study about the best
investment alternative for teens or solving the problem about teens not having an
investment knowledge and other easy ways for the teens to improve it.
Researchers Reflection
48
The researchers has gained new knowledge about how to make research in a
qualitative way and process. Qualitative research design process is very different from
the previous one even though it was thought differently by two different teachers.
Qualitative research design is very hard to be done and its cycle. Qualitative needs a very
intensive and focused analysis to the gathered data. This research method tested the
patience of every researcher that conducted this study.
In the analysis of the data , the statements should be analyze and put in the fit
category that it should be included. Those clustered category or theme will be grouped
and formed into a general theme to have an insightful phenomena.in the process of this
research study even it is tiring, stressful and time consuming, it can also be rewarding
and satisfying in each one of the researchers.
This research study has also provided each one of the researcher ideas which tested
the values, professionalism and patience that can be helpful in the future. The styles of
different researches are also known by the researchers.
The researchers while doing this study reflected, that being a researcher is a very
important and vital role to have a more realistic and insightful phenomena that can help
to dig deeper about some situation that should be answered and can help the surrounding
around.
