WHAT IS A PERISCOPE
A periscope is an instrument for observation
over, around and through an object, obstacle or
condition that prevents direct line of sight
observation (spying) from an observer’s current
position.in its simplest form , it consists of an
outer case with mirrors at each end set parallel to
each other at a 45 degree angle . this from of
periscope ,with addition of two simple lenses served
for observation purpose in the trenches during World
War 1 .

● Military personnel also use periscope in some

gun turrets and in armoured vehicles
The history of
Periscope
Inventors
The inventors are own to be Jules Carpenter
and Sarah Mather ( the official periscope
was known to be invented in 1845)
Jules Carpenter
● Although they are known to be the
first inventors there were other
inventors who perfected their ideas
Such as this Article stating that :

In 1854, Hippolyte Marie-Davy invented

the first naval periscope , consisting of a
vertical tube with two small mirrors fixed at
each end at 45 degrees, Simon lake used
periscopes in his submarines in 1902 . and Sir
Howard Grubb perfected the device in World War
1 as mentioned before .Morgan Robertson claims
to have tried to patent the periscope he Sarah Mather
described a submarine using a periscope in his
work

OVERVIEW
how to make a simple
periscope
Step 1 Step 2
Cut the tops off two clean milk cartons.
Find two small mirrors the same size.,
● A long, sturdy cardboard tube could also work
● You may be able to find small mirrors at a craft or
art supply store, or from an online store.

Step 3 Step 4
Tape the two cartons together. Use packing Cut a hole on one side just big enough for a
tape or another strong tape to tape the open mirror.
