Chapter one
Introduction
1.0 Introduction
This study is about: Introduction, Background of the study, problem statement, research purpose,
research objectives, research questions, scope of the study, significant of the study, operational
definitions and Conceptual Framework.

1.1 Background of the study

1.1.1 Global History
Attempts to understand the nature of illicit drug abuse and addiction can be traced back for
centuries, however, the search has always been limited by the scientific theories and social
attitudes available or dominant at any one time. Dr. Benjamin Rush, a founder of the first
medical school in the United States and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was one of
the pioneers of U.S. drug abuse research. However, he had few scientific resources available to
attack the problem. The intricacies of cellular response to a drug could not be understood until
tools were developed to measure the response and to integrate this knowledge with complex
cellular biochemistry—a technology that has been developed only in the past decade. One can
compare this situation with that of pneumonia. A myriad of treatments and partially effective
remedies were used until the discovery of penicillin, when the old treatments became a part of
medical history. It is now possible, however, to be optimistic that the tools needed to resolve the
addiction problem are at hand.

1.1.2 Continental History

In Africa, Young people who persistently abuse substances often experience an array of
problems, including academic difficulties, health-related problems (including mental health),
poor peer relationships, and involvement with the juvenile justice system.

1.1.3 National History

Increased drug abuse among marginalized youth has led to an increase in crime, including
violence against women and girls. According to the research body, Somali Public Agenda, it has
also led to the recent phenomenon of street gangs, known as "Ciyal Weero", which have been
striking terror across Mogadishu.
1.2 problem statement
1.2.1 Current situation
Whereas they used to chew the narcotic leaf khat - which is not illegal - drink alcohol, sniff glue
or smoke hashish, more and more people are abusing opioids which they inject directly into their
veins. These include morphine, tramadol, pethidine and codeine.

1.2.2 Consequence or Result

Each drug causes different physical reactions, depending on the type of drug. Some will make
you feel more awake, alert and energetic. Others will give you a calm, relaxed feeling. Some
alter your perceptions and can cause hallucinations. Others may make you feel numb.

Long-term use and larger doses have negative effects that can seriously harm your health, even
cause death, including disease risks from sharing needles, and permanent damage to the brain
and other organs.
