Definition of Geometric Sequence
Definition of Geometric Sequence
You learned that a sequence whose consecuve terms have a common difference is an arithmec sequence. In this secon
we discuss geometric sequences, where successive terms have a common rao. In other words, each term is found by
mulplying the previous term by the same constant. The sequence 4,12,36,108,... is geometric because each term is found
by mulplying the previous term by 3
A sequence is geometric when the ratios of consecutive terms are the same. So,
the sequence a1 , a2 , a3 , a4 ,..., an ,... is geometric when there is a number r such
2 a a3 a4
that = = = = ... r , r ≠ 0 .
a1 a2 a3
an +1
Because = r , the number r is the common ratio of the sequence.

The first step to dividing fractions is to find the reciprocal (reverse the numerator and denominator) of the
second fraction. Next, multiply the two numerators. Then, multiply the two denominators. Finally, simplify the
fractions if needed.
