Applied Calculus

Homework 8

Instructions: The homework is submitted electronically on Moodle. Please upload your

solutions as a single pdf document in A4 format. You may type your solutions directly
on a computer or write them on paper and scan them into a pdf. If you don’t have access
to a scanner, you may simply take photos of your pages and combine them into a single
pdf using any of the various free online JPG to PDF converters. If you are submitting
handwritten scans, then make sure that your scans are readable from a computer
screen. Write in reasonably large letters. Keep in mind that the quality of a scan or a photo
is usually much better if you write only on one side of a page.

1. (9 points) Sketch a contour diagram for each of the following functions with at least
four labeled contours.
(a) f (x, y) = x + y + 3,
(b) f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 − 2,
(c) f (x, y) = 3xy.
2. (2+2+2+2+3 points) Compute all first order partial derivatives of the following
functions
(a) f (x, y) = x2 + 2xy + y 3 ,
(b) f (u, v) = ue3u+2v ,
x+y
(c) f (x, y) = ,
x−y
y ln x
(d) f (x, y) = ,
x
(e) f (x, y, z) = x cos z + x2 y 3 ez .
3. (10 points) A company’s production output, P , is given in tons, and is a function of
the number of workers, N , and the value of the equipment, V , in units of 25000 EUR.
The production function for the company is
P = f (N, V ) = 5N 0.75 V 0.25 .
The company currently employs 80 workers, and has equipment worth 750000 EUR.
What are N and V ? Using a basic calculator, find the values of f , fN , and fV at

these values of N and V . Give units and explain what each answer means in terms of
production.
