Gothic literature, with its dark and mysterious style, has fascinated readers for

many years.
The genre first appeared in the 18th century and underwent very big changes,
influencing literature, art and culture but also society.

The roots of Gothic literature date back to the mid-18th century, as a reaction to
the rationalism and Enlightenment ideals of the time.
The industrial revolution and social changes of the time, created a sense of
unease and danger and provided fertile ground for the birth of genres that explored
non-negative emotions, anger,darkness, mystery.
All that is contained in negative emotions.

The term "Gothic" originally referred to the architectural style of medieval

buildings such as cathedrals, characterized by sharp arches and ornate frescoes
that often depicted biblical scenes.
Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto is considered the first Gothic novel and
laid the foundation for the genre.
