Course Title : CE Laws, Ethics and Contracts
Professor: NENITA M. ABARADO, C.E. PH.D.T.M.
Topic: Total Project Cost

A. Summary of The Topic (One Paragraph)

Understanding the components that make up a project's overall cost in civil
engineering is the focus of this topic. It emphasizes the preliminary planning stage,
which includes field research and geotechnical investigations. The expected cost of
building the facility, minus certain fees, land charges, and administrative legal
expenditures, makes up the total project cost. The subject also emphasizes the
significance of routine cost estimate revisions and the inclusion of contingencies to
account for intangible costs.

B. Meaning (1-2 Paragraphs)

The total cost of a civil engineering project, including diverse expenses such
professional engineering fees, construction costs, ongoing legal and financial expenses,
and contingencies, is known as the project cost. Professional engineering costs are
expenses for comprehensive engineering services and fine-grained engineering design.
The client must approve the construction cost, which is the expected cost of physically
constructing the facility.
Costs associated with legal and administrative procedures, land acquisition, staffing,
and financial aspects of the project are referred to as Legal, Land, Administration, and
Staffing Costs. To account for unforeseen or intangible costs, a contingency allowance
is a percentage added to the estimated probable final project cost.
C. Reaction (1-2 Paragraphs)
As a student of civil engineering, this information highlights how difficult it is to
estimate project costs. It requires more than just figuring exactly how much labor and
supplies will cost; it also takes into account things like geotechnical explorations, legal
costs, and eventualities. It emphasizes the value of careful planning throughout the
project's first stages and the requirement for ongoing changes as new information
becomes available. This insight is essential for next projects because it enables us to
recognize the complexity of cost estimation and the value of contingency planning.

D. Application: Relate to Your Own Experience (1 Paragraph)

This subject gives civil engineering students a taste of the difficulties we'll encounter
in the real world while estimating project expenditures. It emphasizes the necessity of
careful preparation and the inclusion of contingencies to take into account uncertainty.
We can manage projects more effectively if we are aware of the many cost factors,
such as professional engineering charges and legal expenses. The idea of routine cost
modifications also related to my experience when we change budget plans for research
or group projects, where new information is constantly being discovered. With this
information, we may become well-rounded civil engineers who can handle the
complicated financial aspects of our next projects.
