Small lock or big block, the firing order is

the same: 18436572. This of course
means that # 1 fires first and the rest in
order. From the driver's side looking
forward the #1 cylinder is the front left.
When setting up your distributor with the
cap off point the rotor contact will point
to the # 1 wire location on the cap. Your
question though was what is the firing
order diagram? The diagram is simply
instructions on distributor / cap/ wire
locations to help set up initially.

The firing order on a small block

Chevrolet as delivered by Chevrolet is

1–8–4–3–6–5–7–2

Cyl 1 is on left side of engine (left as

viewed from within the passenger
compartment of the vehicle), with all odd
numbered cylinders on that side. 1 on
front and 7 on back. Cyl 2 is on the right
side of the engine (again as viewed from
within the vehicle) and all even cylinders
are on this side, starting with 2 on the
front and culminating with 8 on the back.

talking about a Chevy V8. Being a cross-
plane crank, 90° V8, there are limitations
on the order. The stock firing order is 1-8-
4-3-6-5-7-2. There are some people who
do the 4–7 swap that reduces the
tendency for the cam to have torsional
twist under the loads of opening 2 sets of
valves right next to each other in the firing
order at the end of the cam farthest from
the drive sprocket. This keeps the valve
timing more accurate.

Generally, the firing order for a Chevy 350
(5.7L) is 1–8–4–3–6–5–7–2. I remember
this very well based on the area in which I
grew up. The telephone prefix 436 is one
local city while 572 is another. The
distributor rotates clockwise with cylinder
1 at the front left of the distributor.

Also, the left cylinder bank is the odd

cylinders (1, 3, 5 and 7, from the front.)
The right bank is the even cylinders (2, 4,
6 and 8, from the front.)

For further clarification, left is always the

driver's side of the vehicle, right is the
passenger side in a left-hand drive car.

‘92 to ’96 . The gen 2 small block which
was offered in the Corvette, camaro,
Caprice / Roadmaster and I believe the
Fleetwood got them to. Never offered in
truck. replaced by the LS1 in ‘97. While
the truucks carried on with the gen 1’s
until something like 2002 when they to
got the LS small blocks. . The 350 Gen 3 (
LS1 ) was very similiar in performance to
the gen 2. But the gen 2 featured reverse
( cool the head first ) cooling while the LS
engines went back to traditional ( heads
last ) cooling. The gen 2 in the 4.3L (
265ci ) displacement makes a pretty
stout little engine to.

Well that’s not precisely true they both
function in the same manner but the are
different engines. Even Chevrolet engines
are different you must be very savy with
engine casting numbers and the parts
books to get the correct parts as GM has
no problem with making changes
whenever it suits them .

This is both good and bad. Makes salvage

yard purchases more difficult than just
pulling a 5.7 liter engine and slapping your
heads from your blown 5.7 at home.
