LEGEND OF DERAWAN ISLAND

Aulia Aisyah Al Humaira (XID)

Once upon a time, in East Kalimantan, there lived two families who were as close as the petals of a
flower. Each family had a daughter and a son who grew up together, sharing stories and secrets. As the
years passed, the children began to develop feelings for one another, and they soon found themselves in
love.

With their hearts set on a future together, they decided to tell their parents of their plans for marriage.
Thrilled with the news, the parents gave their blessings, and preparations for the wedding began in
earnest.

The bride’s family set off for Pulau Panjang, where the wedding ceremony was to take place.
Meanwhile, the groom’s family, led by his mother and other relatives, departed soon after.

With the spirits of both families high, they all set sail in a beautiful sailing vessel. But alas, before they
could reach their destination, a great storm descended upon them, causing their ship to capsize in the
treacherous waters.

Sadly, all the passengers on board were lost – but according to an ancient legend, their spirits lived on,
transformed into the beautiful islands of Derawan, Kakaban, Sangalnd Maratua.

It said Derawan Island is taken by the bride whose still a girl (perawan), while Pulau kakaban is taken by
her older sister (kakak), While Pulau Sangalaki is taken by the groom and Pulau Maratua Is referred to
his mother-in-law (mertua)
