I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my English
teacher Mrs Vibha Verma Puri as well as our principal Dr. Sarita Sirohi w
gave me the golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on the
topic Arunanchal Pradesh.
Secondly, I would also like to thank my parents and friends who
helped me a lot in finalizing this project within the limited time
frame.
Lastly, I like to thank all my supporters who have motivated me to
fulfil my project before the timeline.
INTRODUCTION
ARUNACHAL PRADESH, situated in the north eastern part of India
is 83,743 sq km in area and has a long international border with
Bhutan to the west (160 km), China to the north and north-east
(1,080 km) and Myanmar to the east (440 km). It stretches from
snow-capped mountains in the north to the plains of Brahmaputra
valley in the south. Arunachal is the largest state area wise in the
north-eastern region, even larger than Assam which is the most
populous.
It is a land of lush green forests, deep river valleys and beautiful
plateaus. The land is mostly mountainous with Himalayan ranges
along the northern borders criss-crossed with mountain ranges
running north-south.
GEOGRAPHY
Arunachal Pradesh is land of peanuts in the foothills of
the Himalayas in northeast India. It is spread over an area of
83,743 km2 (32,333 sq mi). 98% of the geographical area is land out
of which 80% is forest cover;2% is water. River systems in the region,
including those from the higher Himalayas and Patkoi and Arakan
Ranges, eventually drain into the Brahmaputra River.
Elevation ranges from mountains that are above 7,000 metres
(23,000 ft), to the towns in the plains with an elevation of less than
300 metres (980 ft).Arunachal shares international borders
with Bhutan, Tibet (China) and Burma. Internally, Arunachal borders
the states of Assam and Nagaland. Arunachal is called the "orchid
state of India" and "dawn-lit mountain/Land of Dawn/Land of
Dawn-Lit Mountains".
FLORA
Flora of Arunachal Pradesh exhibits an enormous diversity in nature.
There are large numbers of timber species, various kinds of orchids,
medicinal plants, ferns, bamboos, canes and cultivated plants. Other
group of plants are Rhododendrons, Hedychiums and oaks. There are
several species of orchids, rhododendron, hedychium, oak, canes,
bamboo and medicinal and aromatic plants. The state has many
endangered species too. Some rare flora species that occur in
Arunachal Pradesh are Amentotazus assamica which is found in Lohit
District. Rhododendron is found in Subansiri District. Orchids form a
dominant group of plants in Arunachal Pradesh. Around 600 species of
orchids are found in Arunachal Pradesh. They are colourful,
spectacular, rare, endangered and ornamental. Some are commercially
important too.
FAUNA
Wildlife of Arunachal Pradesh asserts to have species that are extinct today. Four major
varieties of the big cats in its jungles that includes leopard,Royal bengal tiger, snow
leopard and clouded leopard. Lesser catlike species like the marbled cat and golden cat are also
visible. More than 500 species of birds have been found there, many of which are highly
endangered and found in this state only. They are the white-winged duck, scatter and few
others. A large mammal called "Mithun" is a majestic animal, which is native to Arunachal
Pradesh.
There are several Wild Life Sanctuaries and National Parks to preserve the natural habitat
of the state. They are the Eagle nest Wildlife Sanctuary, Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary,
Mouling National Park, Kane Wildlife Sanctuary, Dr D. Erring Memorial Wildlife
Sanctuary, Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve, Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary and Namdapha
Wildlife Sanctuary.
CULTURE
The culture of Arunachal Pradesh is truly distinctive as it comprises of
26 different tribes including various sub-tribes. Each tribe follows its
own traditions and customs. There are mainly three cultural groups in
Arunachal.
•The first group of the people of Arunachal Pradesh is made of
Monpas and Sherdukpens of Tawang and West Kameng districts. They
are the followers of the Lamaistic tradition of Mahayana Buddhism.
•The second group comprises of Adis, Akas, Apatanis, Bangnis, Mijis,
Mishmis, Nishis and Thongsas, the worshipers of Sun and Moon God.
•The third tribe of Arunachal comprises of Octes and Wanchos tribal
communities of the Tirap district. They follow basic Vaishnavism and
maintain a strict village society that is ruled by a hereditary chief.
CUISINE
The rich diversity of Arunachal Pradesh is reflected in its cuisine, with
every tribe contributing their own special dishes to the gastronomical
platter of the state. Each dish existing today has been passed down from
generations, with the flavours telling stories of native Arunachal
Pradesh.
The staple food of Arunachal Pradesh is rice, and the locals mostly eat
boiled or smoked food. One of the main ingredients is bamboo shoot
and they eat a lot of strictly boiled or steamed leafy vegetables, fish, and
meat. Fermented foods are much loved by the locals and many yummy
delights are made with them. Fried foods in Arunachal Pradesh are not
really popular but are still available. The lovely cuisine of this state is
mostly devoid of any spice but nonetheless delicious. The locals are also
fond of dairy products and you will be able to find dishes where such
products are used.
