resources basin/pail, plastic bottle, cotton
III. Procedures Teacher’s Activity
A. Review Ask: Do you still remember about the three state
of matter? What are the three states of matter?
Do: Identify the following materials as to solid,
liquid or gas.
1. ball pen
2. fart
3. water
4. cotton
5. straw
B. Motivation Say: There are different materials found in the KRA 1.
community, and each material possesses Objective 2.
Used a range of
different properties. Using the letters of alphabet, teaching
decode the numbers to get the different words strategies that
related to this day’s lesson enhance
learner
achievement in
literacy and
numeracy skills

learning
2. resources
including ICT,
to address
learning goals

3.

4.

- Good job! You got it right! You will learn in

this lesson the meaning of the decoded
words.

C. Activity - Say: This time we will perform an activity. I KRA 2

want you to observe, listen as we do this. Objective 4
Managed
classroom
- Do: Show all the materials: rubber ball, structure to
water, glass, rug, face towel, basin/pail, engage
plastic bottle, cotton learners,
individually or
in groups, in
- Say: First, I will put water in a basin/pail. meaningful
Next, I will put the materials one by one in exploration,
the basin of water/pail of water for few discovery and
hands on
seconds and observe what will happen.
activities within
Observe each material once taken out of the a range of
basin/pail. physical
learning
- Do: Let the pupils group the materials into environments
two according to their ability to absorb
water as you take them out.
- Prompt pupils about the meaning of the
word “absorb” which is the ability to take in
water and the meaning of the words “porous
and non-porous”

D. Analysis Questions: KRA 1

1. Based on the activity, what can you say Objective 3
Applied a range
about these two groups of materials? of teaching
strategies to
2. Did they take some of the water in or develop creative
absorb water? Why? What made them take and critical
thinking, as
some of the water in/absorb water? Well as other
higher order
3. What are the materials that absorb water? thinking skills
How did it absorb water?

4. How about the other group, did the

materials take some water in or they do
not absorb water? Why not?

5. Which of these materials did not absorb

water? Why did it not absorb water?

E. Abstraction Do: Let the pupils fill in the T-chart for porous
and non-porous materials using the word strips
below:
- Absorb water
- Do not absorb water
- Have small holes that allow air or liquid to
pass through
- Do not have small holes that allow air or
liquid to pass through
- Examples are cotton, cloth, paper
- Examples are straw, glass, and rubbers

Porous Non - porous

Say: There are different materials in our

environment that can be classified based on their
ability to absorb water more than the others.

- Absorb means to take in (something, such

as liquid) in a natural or gradual way.
Paper, cardboard, cloth, are a few examples
of porous materials.
- Porous materials have small holes that allow
air or liquid to pass through.

- These materials may also be called

absorbent materials.

- On the other hand, non-porous materials do

not allow air or liquid to pass through. They
may also be called nonabsorbent materials.
An example of which are hard-surfaced
substances like stainless steel, hard
covering, and rigid synthetic elements or
substances like plastics and rubbers.

F. Application Do & Say: Pair up the pupils and give them KRA 1
show-me-cards. Tell them that they’re partners in Objective 1
Apply
answering the activity. Pupils with incorrect knowledge
answers will not be allowed to join the activity within and
unless they state an example of porous and non- across
porous materials. curriculum
teaching areas

Direction: Tell whether the materials are porous

or non-porous by raising your show-me-cards.
- marble - tissue paper
- steel - manila paper
- sponge - Styrofoam
- face towel - curtain
- t-shirt - raincoat
- rug - rubber boots
Valuing Ask: Why is it that you use these things during
rainy days? Why is it important to wear
appropriate clothes according to seasons or
weathers?

IV. Evaluation
A. Write true if the statement is correct. If the KRA 4.
statement is false change the underlined word/s Objective 10.

_____5. Steel is a material that absorbs water.
B. Directions: Write A for absorbent if the
materials absorb water and NA for non-
absorbent, if the materials do not absorb water.

V. Assignment At home identify five (5) examples of porous and

non-porous materials by choosing one from
below:
A. Record a video of you showing an
experiment of identifying porous from non-
porous materials;
B. Drawing in a bond paper each example of
porous and non-porous materials.
