Temperature and Concentration Effects on Rate of Reaction - Virtual Lab

Essential Question: How do temperature and concentration of reactant affect the rate of reaction?
How do these models demonstrate the Theory of Collision and displacement reactions?

Materials: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/reactions-and-rates

Background:
The Theory of Collision states: When two particles collide sometimes a chemical reaction happens.
Not all collisions result in a chemical reaction. Chemical reactions only occur when specific sites on
each molecule collide. To increase the number of successful collisions, change the conditions of the
reaction.

A displacement reaction is a type of reaction where part of one reactant is replaced by another
reactant. Single displacement reactions are reactions where one reactant replaces part of the other.
AB + C → AC + B

Procedure: Open the PHET simulation and explore all the tabs. Change the settings and create
conditions that cause change in reactions. Observe how temperature and concentration affect the
“molecules” and how often they bump into each other. On the “Rate Experiments” tab set up the
experiment as shown in the pictures and answer the questions.
