Introduction to ANSYS MESHING

Background

This workshop will demonstrate the basic workflow of ANSYS meshing.

Objectives:
 Ansys Meshing starting.
 Meshing generated.
 Named selection created.
 Meshing examined.
 Mesh quality checking.
 Save the project.

Project Start Up

Start workbench
 Start > All program > Ansys 14.0 > Workbench 14.0

Starting Meshing

 Double click or right click and select

edit on the mesh cell (A3).
 Ansys Meshing will start up and load the geometry.

Unit

 From the main menu, select

Metric (m,kg.......)

Set default

 Click mesh in the outline.

Details of mesh will appear

 Select physics preference to CFD

 Select solver preference to Fluent

Under sizing set the following items:

 Select advanced size function to On:

Curvature
 Relevance center to Fine.
 Smoothing to High.

 Click Generate Mesh button to generate mesh .

Change the type of meshing

 Right on Mesh, click insert and select method.

 This tab will be appear. Then click on surface geometry and click apply
button. Change method to triangles. Click Generate Mesh button to
generate mesh .
 Click on mesh at outline to see the change of surface mesh.

Refine the mesh size

 Right on Mesh, click insert and select

Sizing.
 Click on circle edge, then apply and
put value 0.01m for Element Size.
 Click Generate Mesh button to
generate mesh .
 Click on mesh at outline to see the
change of surface mesh.
 The mesh comparison after using edge sizing.

Inflation

 Right click on Mesh, click insert

and select Inflation.
 Click on domain box surface,
then apply at Geometry.
 Click on circle edge, then apply
at Boundary and put value 10 for
Number of Layers and 0.04m
for Maximum Thickness.
 Click Generate Mesh button to
generate mesh .
 Click on mesh at outline to see the change of surface mesh.
 The view of surface mesh after inflation.

Named selections

 Select the edge as

circle in red colour by
clicking left mouse
button.
 Select the circle edge,
right click and select
create named
selection
 In the named selection dialog box,
put the name of ‘sphere’ and click
ok.
 Then, boundary name ‘sphere’ will
appear at outline tree.

 Follow the same step of create named

selections for ‘inlet’, ‘outlet’ and ‘wall’,
then, the boundary for ‘inlet’, ‘outlet’ and
‘wall’ will appear at outline tree (using
Ctrl on keyboard to select more than one
edges).
Check Quality

 Before using a mesh in any solver it is

important to check the mesh quality.
 Quality is defined through various
metrics which measure the degree to
which each mesh cell varies from an
ideal shape.
 In the details Mesh panel expand
statistics. Click in the box to the right of
Mesh Metric and select Orthogonal
Quality.
 The minimum value for Orthogonal
Quality is important and should not fall
below 0.05.The minimum for this mesh
is acceptable.

 Close Meshing Window and the right click at mesh, then select update
and save.
