Instructions:

1. This is a group work (3 members).


2. With reference to topics in Weeks 2 to 5, select ONE poem* by an established XXX poet.

7. For Items 3 & 4, they will be graded individually.
8. Hardcopy submission of assignment in Letterbox 207, Bakawali Building by the deadline.

ASSESSMENT II (30%)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Work in groups of 3.
2. From the short story, carry out the following tasks:

i. Identify THREE different types of linguistic deviations employed by the writer
ii. Critically evaluate the story by comparing how the writer has successfully expressed his
views/feelings in each of the literary/linguistic device.

4. Give a 10 minutes powerpoint presentation on your findings in Weeks 11/12. Another 5 mins is
allocated for Q&A.

DEADLINES:

1. Weeks 10/11: hand in a handcopy of your powerpoint slides in class


2. Weeks 11/12: upload powerpoint slides to SPeCTRUM

EVALUATION SCHEME:

30% of total course marks

Contents of powerpoint slides must show how FORMS enhance MEANINGS (with suitable examples
cited from the prose/play)
Organization of information:

1. Overview of the story and the most prominent theme

4. Repeat Steps 2 & 3 for Presenters 2 & 3

(30 marks = 30%)

• Prose – Accurate identification of foregrounded features – 3 x 2 marks = 6 marks

• Prose – Accurate labelling of foregrounded features – 3 x 2 marks = 6 marks

• Each identified linguistic feature/literary device needs to be explained in terms of its


functional significance in relation to the prose’s theme/meaning – 3 x 6 marks = 18 marks

ASSESSMENT III (40%)

Instructions:

1. Each group (5-6 members) will compose critical reviews of literary works through comparative
stylistic analyses on a selection of two poems from the anthology, XXX*.

*To be provided by the Instructor

2. Based on the selected poems, carry out the following:

3. In the first two paragraphs of your assignment, briefly provide an overview of a) what both
poems are about; and b) the most salient theme.

4. In the following paragraphs, focus on FOUR of the most salient linguistic features/literary
devices that are foregrounded.

5. Discuss in detail how these FOUR distinct linguistic features/ literary devices express meaning
at various discourse levels. Systematic stylistic analyses must be shown in the discussion.

6. Critically evaluate the poems by discussing how the poets have successfully expressed
his/her views/feelings via a range of stylistic features. Discuss what effects are evoked and
how this, in turn, is crucial to the interpretion of the meaning of the poems.

7. For Items 4 to 6, they will be graded individually.

8. Provide the poems and bibliographic information in the Appendix.

9. The accompanying written assignment must be typed (Arial, Font Size 12, Double Spaced).
All references to any source of information that has aided in the analysis must be
acknowledged. All referencing must follow the APA stylesheet. The written assignment
should not be less than 2500 words and must not exceed 3500 words (excluding list of
references & appendix).

10. A hardcopy of the written assignment must be dropped into Letterbox 207, Bakawali Building.

Mark Allocation for Assessment III
(100 marks – 40%)

• Overview of the poems and the most prominent theme = 10 marks.

• Accurate identification & labelling of FOUR foregrounded features = 4 x 5 marks (20 marks).

• Critical evaluation of the poets’ use of the stylistic features to express meanings at various
discourse levels through systematic stylistic analyses = 4 x 10 marks (40 marks).

• Well-organized/systematic discussion written in clear, precise and engaging language = 20
