Technical Manual
900IW230 neoweigh™
4002-FP third generation weighing system
Designed and manufactured by Scale-Tronix®
for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare CosyCot™ Infant Warmers

IMPORTANT! Please note the following before first use of the neoweigh
infant scales.

For those countries that implement the EU NAWI Directive 90/384/EEC, an

inspection or verification by officials of the National metrology agency may
be required before the neoweigh™ scales can be put into use. In particular
an initial verification of the neoweigh™ scales may be required to ensure the
scales meet any local gravity zone requirements. The scales may also have
to be re-adjusted and re-verified when moved from one part of a country
to another, in particular if transported north or south. This is because of a
different gravity value at the new location.

Officials may place a mark and a seal on the neoweigh™ scales to indicate
that the scales conforms to national laws and regulations and may also
indicate in which part of a country the adjustment applies to.

Note: It is the responsibility of the owner and user of the neoweigh™ scales
to ensure that the scales conform to local laws and regulations.

Note: It is the responsibility of the owner to maintain the scale’s markings.

If markings are removed, the scales no longer conforms to laws and
regulations. It is also the responsibility of the owner to maintain the seal
and have the scales re-verified if the seal is broken or if an un-authorized
adjustment has been made.

Programing Features

Special Programming Features

This third generation weighing scale incorporates a unique feature that lets
you “customize” the scale to best suit your needs. This “set-up” mode allows
the characteristics of the scale to match your particular requirements. Items
that can be selected include the weighing units, beeper on/off, etc.
Entering the “Set-up” Mode
To enter the “set‑up” mode make sure the scale is attached to the appropriate
power source. Press and hold the “hidden switch” above the Fisher name on
the front panel while pressing the “UNITS” pushbutton on the front panel
five (5) times, then release the hold on the “hidden” switch. The display will
indicate “USER”. Press the “UNITS” pushbutton one time and the scale will
display “SEt‑UP”. “Set-up” mode has now been entered.
Setting the Options
First enter the “SET‑UP” mode as explained above.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “SOFt” (software
version). Then press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The software version will
be displayed (i.e. “U 1.00”). This is provided as a reference aid in determining
which features are contained within the software.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “dAtE” (date). Again
press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The release date of the software will be
displayed. A display of “06.23.06” would correspond to June 23, 2006. This
is provided as a reference aid in determining which features are contained
within the software.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “SCALE”. Press the
“UNITS” pushbutton again; the abbreviated model number of the scale will
be displayed (i.e.: “4002FP”). This is provided as a reference aid to help with
customer trouble‑shooting and is set at the factory.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “rES” (resolution of
weight). Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The weight resolution of the
scale will be displayed. This scale is set at the factory for 0.010 kg (10 grams)
and is not adjustable.

3
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “UnitS” (weight units).
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The “kg” annunciator will light along
with a display of “0.000”. Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will
display either “On” or “OFF” along with the kg annunciator.

By pressing the “Weigh” pushbutton the Kg (kilogram) units can be turned

“On” or “OFF”. When switched to “OFF” the kilograms weight display will no
longer function.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “UnitS” (weight units).
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The “lb” & “oz” annunciators will
light along with a display of “0 0”. Then press the “UNITS” pushbutton
again. The scale will display either “On” or “OFF” along with the “lb” & “oz”
annunciators.

By pressing the “Weigh” pushbutton the “lb oz” (pounds/ounces) units can
be turned “On” or “OFF”. When switched to “OFF” the “lb oz” weight display
will no longer function.

Note: Only 900IW230J models have lb and oz option. If both the “kg” and
“lb / oz” units are turned off the scale will automatically re enable the “kg”
(kilograms) weight units on the display. This feature will ensure that the scale
will always display weight data.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “bEEPEr” (audio beeper
or audio annunciator). Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. “On” or “OFF”
will be displayed. This may be changed by pressing the “Weigh” pushbutton.
Setting this option to “OFF” will eliminate the audible signal that occurs when
a front panel pushbutton is pressed or a weight is locked in. Some folks
like this “silent running” feature. It may be desirable to disable the audio
annunciator for use in low stimulus environments.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display “FiltEr”. This pertains to
the scales internal electronic filter. It is good engineering practice to set the
filter to 50 or 60 Hz depending on the frequency of the local power mains;
however the selection of the filter frequency does not affect the accuracy of
the scale.

4
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton. The scale will display either “50 H” (50 Hertz)
or “60 H” (60 Hertz). Use the “Weigh” pushbutton to select the appropriate
power mains frequency – “60 H” for North America.

Pressing the “UNITS” pushbutton again returns the scale to the introductory
“SEt‑UP” mode. The scale can be returned to the standby mode by pressing
the “hidden” pushbutton switch over the Fisher name on the front panel twice
(2 times). The scale will display a series of dashes indicating the scale is
ready for normal operation with the appropriate features.

NOTE:
The scale is completely tested and calibrated at the factory before shipping.
It should not require calibration after installation. Calibration procedure is
located in page 12. It is rare that the scale should require recalibration.
Always look for external causes for errors before recalibrating the scale.

5
General Technical Description

The Scale-Tronix® 4002-FP Scale utilizes the latest developments in

electronic scales and integrated circuits to provide a highly reliable and
accurate weighing scale. This section describes the technical aspects of the
scale.

The scale is composed of several major sections:

–– Weighing platform load cell transducers.
–– Analog to digital (A/D) converter & amplifier.
–– Microcomputer, keyswitch, and associated logic.
–– Digital display and driver circuitry.
–– Power Supply.

The electronic circuits are contained on two printed circuit boards mounted in
the readout enclosure. They include the 24005 instrument board with power
supply, and the 24005 display board.

Load Cell Transducers

The load cell transducers are very sensitive and precise devices, which
produce a voltage output in direct proportion to the weight applied. The
weighing platform contains four separate, co-planar beam type transducers;
one for each corner of the platform. The four individual transducers are
connected in parallel to “sum” the individual corner weights.

The load cell transducers contain precision resistive strain gauges arranged
in a full Wheatstone bridge configuration. The transducer bridge is “excited”
(powered) with a regulated +5 volts D.C. This voltage is applied to the
opposite corners of the bridge designated “+EXC” and”-EXC”. The signal
output (“+SIG” and “-SIG”) is the voltage that changes in proportion to the
weight applied. This output is a very low level DC voltage (in the millivolt
range at full-scale capacity.)

Weight Signal Processing

The signal from the load cell transducers is applied to the 24005 instrument
board at location “J1” and connected to integrated circuit “U1”, a type CS5532.
This device is a 24 bit analog to digital converter (A/D) which has internal
amplification and filtering.

6
The purpose of this integrated circuit is to convert the transducer output
signal into a digital word string for further processing and subsequent display.
The transducer output signal is a differential voltage appearing across the
“+SIG” and “-SIG” terminals of the bridge. This differential voltage is biased at
approximately 50% (5 Volts D.C.) of the excitation voltage applied.

Low leakage diodes “D1”, “D2”, “D3”, & “D4” are used to prevent damage to
U1 from accidental overvoltages.

A low pass filter consisting of “L1”, “L2”, “C1”, & “C2” is used to remove
unwanted high frequency noise, such as radio interference, from the weight
signal.

U1 contains a programmable gain instrumentation amplifier that amplifies the

differential transducer signal. Capacitor “C4” is employed as a signal filter for
U1’s internal programmable gain amplifier. U1 also produces a “guard trace”
voltage on pin “A0” which is used to help prevent leakage on the printed
circuit board. When connected to the guard trace on the printed circuit board
it helps to reduce the potential for leakage due to surface contaminants on
the board.

The amplified signal is then applied internally to U1’s 24 bit analog to digital
converter. U1 contains all the active circuitry need to perform the conversion.
The reference voltage for the A/D converter is taken directly from the same
+5 Volt excitation (+Vaa) used to power the load cell transducers. By using
this technique (ratiometric operation) the output data from the A/D converter
is not affected by small changes in the +Vaa supply.

U1’s various parameters, such as amplification gain, filtering, conversion

rate, etc. are set through software control by microcontroller “U101”, located
on the 24005 display board.

After conversion to a digital word the weight signal is sent to microcomputer

U101 in serial format. Data lines used for this are “SCK”, a serial clock to
time the data transfers; “SDO”, a serial data output line for transferring the
converted weight value to microcontroller U101; and “SDI”, a serial data input
line used by U101 to send commands to U1.

7
Resistors “R1”, “R2” and “R3” are included to help bias the data lines.

These are attached between the respective data line and +5V Vdd to serve
as “pull-ups” to improve the data waveform transition and level. “XTAL1” is a
4.9152 MHz crystal used to generate the internal clock timing for U1.

Capacitors “C3” & C7”, “C6”, and “C5” are used as bypass capacitors to
reduce noise on the analog power supply (+Vaa), digital power supply (+Vdd),
and reference voltage respectively.

Voltage Rectification, Filtering and Regulation

The 24005 instrument board contains a power supply to convert the mains
voltage to low voltage DC for operation of the scale’s circuitry and weight
transducers.

Power transformer “T1” is employed to step the mains voltage down from its
nominal rating to a value suitable for operation of the scale. T1 also provides
the scale with electrical isolation from the power mains. T1 employs a dual
primary winding which allows operation on either 115 VAC (T1 primary
windings in parallel) or 230 VAC (T1 primary windings in series). Voltage
selector switch “VS1” is included to conveniently select the operating mains
voltage.

Fuses “FUSE1” and “FUSE2” are provided to protect T1 and the scale’s
mains wiring in the case of a short circuit or serious overload. Because of
the reduced primary current when operating at a mains voltage of 230 VAC,
an additional fuse, “FUSE3” is included to protect T1 when operating at 230
VAC.

A filter is included to reduce problems from interference on the power mains.

This filter is comprised of capacitor “CF” on the instrument board, a ferrite
toroid on the mains lead wires, and an additional capacitor on the mains cord
inlet receptacle.

The low voltage secondary windings of T1 are paralleled to provide greater

current capacity before being applied to full-wave bridge rectifier circuit “DB1”.
DB1 converts the low voltage AC from T1 into a DC voltage, which is then
filtered to remove rectification ripple by electrolytic capacitor “C10”.

8
Integrated circuit voltage regulators “VR1” and “VR2” render regulated
sources of +5 volts D.C. for operation of the analog and digital circuits
respectively. Regulators VR1 and VR2 contain all the necessary internal
circuitry to regulate the voltage, including temperature compensation and
overload current limiting. Use of two separate voltage regulators prevents
digital noise from entering the sensitive analog circuits.

Capacitors “C8” and “C9” are included in the output of the regulator circuitry
to maintain the regulators operating stability.

As in aid in trouble shooting problems, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are

provided as indicators for the two power supply voltages, “+5V Vaa” and “+5V
Vdd”. Resistors “R4” and “R5” provide the current limiting for the LED’s.

Microcomputer and Keyswitch

To attain various additional features, such as pushbutton operation,
automatic sequencing, weight lock-in, pounds/kilograms conversion, etc., a
microcomputer is included to additionally process the data supplied by the
A/D converter. “U101”, located on the 24005 display board, is a complete
8 bit microcomputer with internal data RAM (random access memory)
and EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read only memory) for
program software storage.

During operation of the scale the microcomputer continually receives the

weight readings from the A/D converter, U1, located on the 24005 instrument
board. This data is received via a serial data interface consisting of lines “SCK”,
“SDI”, & “SDO”. The microcomputer also continually scans the keyboard
looking for closed switches. If a key press is sensed the microcontroller
executes whatever action is called for in its program. After processing the
A/D data the microcontroller formats it for display on the scale’s front panel.

A 22.1184 MHz crystal with capacitors “C101” and “C102” forms the clock
circuit for the microcontroller.

The front panel keyswitch is attached to the microcomputers port pins “P3.0”,
“P3.2”, “P3.4”, “P3.6”, and “P3.7”. The common of the keyswitch is connected
to the circuit common. Normally the port pins will rest at the +5V level; when
a front panel switch is depressed the respective microcomputer port pin will
be “pulled down” to 0V. The microcomputer’s software will note the key being
pressed and execute whatever action is required. Resistor network “RN104”

9
provides additional pull-up resistance to improve the noise immunity of the
keyswitch circuit.

Supervisor circuit “U104” is included to control the reset of microcontroller

U101. U104 contains circuitry to detect when the power supply voltage is
within the proper operating limits and generate a reset pulse to initialize
microcontroller U101. Reset will occur when the scale is initially connected
to the power mains or after power interruptions.

IC “U105” is included on the 24005 display board. This device is an EEPROM,

or “electrically erasable, programmable read-only memory”. U105 provides
“non-volatile” storage of some of the operating program data, such as the
option selections and weight calibration constants. This data is retained even
if the system power is removed.

EEPROM U105 communicates with the U101 microcontroller through a

serial data bus consisting of clock line “SCL” and data line “SDA”. Resistors
contained in network RN104 provide bias for the SCL and SDA lines.

Digital Display
Six 0.40” high, red, light-emitting diode (LED), seven segment digits (“DS101”
through “DS106”) are used to provide display of the resulting weight value.
Also Included on the 24005 display board are 5 LED lamp annunciators,
“AN101” through “AN105”. Three are used to indicate the weighing units
(pounds, ounces, and kilograms). The remaining two are used for the “Lift
Baby” and “Replace Baby” functions.

Two additional integrated circuits, “U102” and “U103” serve as drivers for
the LED’s. These drivers provide current amplification to operate the LED’s.
The LED digits and lamp annunciators are multiplex driven, one digit on at
a time, to reduce power consumption and simplify the driver circuitry. The
multiplexing occurs so fast that the human eye cannot detect any perceptible
blinking.

10
“U102” and “U103” are directly connected to microcomputer U101’s output
port pins. U102, connected to port pins “P0.0” through “P0.7”, drives the
display segments or annunciator lamps, while U103, connected to port pins
“P2.0” through “P2.7”, controls which digit is on. Microcontroller U101 formats
the segment/annunciator data and periodically updates the display, at a rate
of approximately 900 Hz.

Current limiting for the LED digits and annunciator lamps is provided by
resistor networks RN101 and RN102 respectively.

U101’s output port connection to U102 is an “open drain” port, requiring an

external pull-up resistor network “RN103” to make the circuit function. To
prevent spurious operation of the display and audio beeper during reset,
resistor network RN103 is gated by digital transistor “Q101”. Q101 is kept off
by microcomputer U101 during reset; after reset Q101 is enabled by port pin
“P1.1” going “low”.

To provide audible feedback to the scales operator, a small audio annunciator,

or “beeper”, labeled “BPR” is included on the instrument board. This device
contains a diaphragm, coil, magnet, and associated electronics to produce
an audible tone when energized. The beeper is switched “on” or “off” by
microcontroller U101 directing an output on driver circuit U102.
Weight Calibration
This scale has been carefully calibrated at the factory. Scale calibration should
be checked annually or when a problem is suspected. Use only calibrated,
certified test weights intended for this purpose. Traction or physical therapy
weights are NOT acceptable since their weight tolerance can be as much
as 10%. Scale calibration weights may be purchased from a local scale
dealer.

An alternative to calibrated weights is the weight comparison method. This

requires a known accurate, calibrated scale. A fixed weight is “weighed”
on the calibrated scale; then the same weight is placed on the scale to be
calibrated.

One 5-kilogram test weight is recommended for calibration, however, other

weights maybe used. A minimum of 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) is required.

11
Calibration
IMPORTANT!: For those countries that implement the NAWI Directive,
calibration of the scales may only be performed by an appropriate official of
the National metrology agency.

Calibration Procedure
Two options are provided when calibrating the scale: A “restore” calibration,
or a “full” calibration. A restore calibration will restore the scales working
calibration registers to their original factory values. This is useful when a
subsequent calibration may have been incorrectly performed or is in doubt.

A “full” calibration will rewrite the scales working calibration registers with the
values established during the calibration procedure. If a scale component
has been replaced or if the scale has drifted in accuracy, a full calibration
should be performed.

–– To restore the scales original factory calibration values enter the “set-up”
mode discussed in page 3.

With the display showing “set-up” press the “WEIGH” pushbutton. The
display will show “SERVICE” then press the “WEIGH” pushbutton again.
The display will show “CAL”.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will now display “rEStor”
(restore factory calibration). If it is desired to restore the calibration to
its original factory values, press the “UNITS” pushbutton again; this will
restore the scale’s working calibration registers to their original factory
values.

If, however, “Error0” is displayed, it indicates there is a problem with

the stored factory calibration constants. Restoring the original factory
calibration will no longer be possible, and a full calibration will be
necessary.

The scale can now be returned to operation by pushing the “hidden

pushbutton” above Fisher on the front panel twice.

–– To perform a full calibration on the scale use the following procedure:

See step one above getting the display to show “CAL”.
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will now display “rEStor”

12
(restore factory calibration). If it is desired to perform a full calibration,
press the “Weigh” pushbutton. The scale will now display “do CAL” (do
full calibration).
Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will now display “CLEAr”
(clear bed area). Remove the test weight from the bed area.

Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will now produce a
traveling “-“ as it takes readings to establish a zero value. It is important
not to touch the bed and affect the reading during this process. If a stable
reading cannot be obtained after a period of time, the message “Error2”
will be displayed. If completed successfully the display will show “LOAd”
(load test weight) and produce a short beep.

Place the selected test weight(s) into the center of the bed area. The
test weight can be any value from 1 kilogram to 8 kilograms, including
equivalent pound weights of 2.2 pounds to 17.6 pounds. In general, the
larger the test weight, the more accurate the calibration.

Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will now produce a
traveling “-“ as it takes readings to establish a loaded weight value. It is
important not to touch the bed and affect the reading during this process.
If a stable reading cannot be obtained after a period of time, the message
“Error1” will be displayed. If completed successfully the display will show
“EntEr” (enter test weight value) and produce a short beep.

Press “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will now display “1.000” with
the “1” flashing and the “Kg” annunciator lamp illuminated. By use of the
“UNITS” and “Weigh” pushbuttons the total value of the test weight(s)
must be entered to complete the calibration. If the test weight is measured
in pounds rather than kilograms, use the following conversion:

kilograms = pounds x 0.4536

Here are some common pound conversions:
1 pound = 0.454 kilograms
2 pounds = 0.907 kilograms
5 pounds = 2.268 kilograms
10 pounds = 4.536 kilograms

13
Pressing the “Weigh” pushbutton will advance the kilograms display from
“1.000” to “2.000”. Pressing it again will advance the kilograms display
from “2.000” to “3.000”, and so on.

Press the “Weigh” pushbutton until the kilogram units display matches the
value of the test weight.

Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will continue to display
the entered value, but now the 0.1’s of kilograms digit will flash. Using the
“Weigh” pushbutton adjust the kilogram 0.1’s display until it matches the
value of the test weight.

Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will continue to display
the entered value, but now the 0.01’s of kilograms digit will flash. Using
the “Weigh” pushbutton adjust the kilogram 0.01’s display until it matches
the value of the test weight.

Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. The scale will continue to display the
entered value, but now the 0.001’s of kilograms digit will flash. Using the
“Weigh” pushbutton adjust the kilogram 0.001’s display until it matches
the value of the test weight.

Press the “UNITS” pushbutton again. All of the digits should remain solidly
lit. The scale should now be displaying the value of the test weight(s)
used for the “LOAd” section of the calibration process.

If additional adjustments to the entered value are needed, press the

“UNITS” pushbutton again and the entry process will restart with the
kilograms digit blinking. Once the scale display matches the test weight
value used for calibration, press the “hidden” pushbutton over Fisher.

If the calibration was completed successfully, the scale will now show
“USER”. If “Error” is displayed it indicates the calibration process has
failed. This can be due to a variety of causes including:

–– Not following the outlined procedure

–– Entering incorrect value of test weight
–– Faulty load cell transducer Defect in the scale’s electronic
circuitry
–– Weighing platform not connected
–– Interference between bed and other structure

14
Return the scale to operation by pressing the “hidden“ pushbutton twice
(2 times) over Fisher on the front panel.

Place the test weight(s) into the center of the bed. Perform a normal
weighing cycle, lifting and replacing the test weight(s) as instructed by
the scale. Note the weight displayed as a result of the weighing cycle; it
should agree with the value of the test weight(s) within +/- 10 grams.

15
Trouble-Shooting

The following, simplified trouble shooting procedures are recommended for

identifying defective system components. Certain corrective measures are
provided. More complicated servicing should only be performed by the factory
or qualified personnel.

Error Messages and Explanations

The scale readout contains software that checks the operation of the readout
during power on and will display an error message along with four long beeps if
a problem is detected. The error messages are as follows:

“E-FAIL”: EPROM failure. Problem with program memory contained in

U101. Replace U101.

“r-FAIL”: Random access memory failure in “U101”. Replace U101.

“n-FAIL”: Non-volatile memory failure. Replace non-volatile memory

“U105”, then Perform calibration.

“C-FAIL”: Calibration data lost. Perform calibration. If problem persists

replace non-volatile memory “U105”, and then perform
calibration.

“A-FAIL”: Communication between the A/D converter “U1” and

microcomputer “U101” has failed. Check cable assembly
between instrument board and display board. Either display
board or instrument board may be defective.

“O-LOAd”: Analog to Digital converter is overrange. Check that weighing

platform is plugged in. Check continuity of platform wiring.
Check internal wiring of scale readout between printed circuit
board and weighing platform socket. Instrument PC board
may be defective.

16
Display Does Not Illuminate
Check that the readout is plugged into the power mains.

Check if the power monitor LED’s located on the instrument board are
illuminated; if not check the three fuses. Inspect the primary mains
wire attachment at the terminal block on the instrument board. Voltage
measurements can be made with a DVM.

Check that microcontroller “U101” is properly seated in its socket. Check

cable assembly between instrument and display board.

Weight Reading Not Accurate

This is commonly caused by a mechanical obstruction of the bed. For
example, the bed could be touching a wall. Check that the weighing
platform’s connecting cable is not rubbing against the bed or that there are
no obstructions between the scales tray and underlay. Also check that the
readout and platform serial numbers are matched.

Perform multiple weighings with a test weight, moving the weight from the
center of the bed to each corner of the bed. This may help localize the
problem to a specific area.

Weight Reading takes Excessive Time to Display

If the platform is in motion the scale will wait for it to settle before displaying
the weight. A warmer that vibrates excessively can cause this. If possible
eliminate the cause of the vibration.

Also check that the transducer cable is firmly plugged into the readout.
Examine the cable to make sure it is not touching the bed. Be sure that bed
is not touching a wall or curtains. Be sure the warmer power cable is not tight
or touching the underside of the bed.

17
Weighing Cycle Never Completes, Display Indicates “O-LOAd”
Check that the weighing platform is plugged in to the readout. Check that the
weight platform is properly oriented so that it is free to move in a downward
direction. The platform cable, connector or load cell transducer may be defective.
The load cell transducer’s continuity and resistance can be checked with an
ohmmeter after unplugging from the readout. The proper resistance values are
listed below:

Wire colours (Pin no.) Resistance Range

GRN(1)/BLK(2)
WHT(3)/RED(4)
to scale frame >10MΩ

Sheild (connector body)

to scale frame >5Ω
GRN(1)/BLK(2) 1150-1200Ω
WHT(3)/RED(4) 995-100Ωv

Consult factory if readings differ from above.

Note: Ohmmeters will not indicate a change in resistance of the load cell
transducer when weights are applied to the scale. This is due to the extremely
small change in the resistance of the strain gauges employed (<1Ω) and the
fact that the bridge configuration presents a constant value of resistance when
measured from its terminals.
