Data Analysis and Questions:

Static Grip Strength

1. Graph #1: plot grip strength in kg (Y-axis) against arm girth in cm (X-axis) for the dominant arm for all
the males and females in your group. Plot both male and female data on one graph.

Describe the overall relationship between grip strength and arm girth you see on your graph.

For the data that we got, the trend shows that as arm girth increases, grip strength generally also
increases.

Force, Velocity and Power Output

2. Graph #2: plot velocity of contraction in meters/minute (Y-axis) against force in kg – total weight in kg
(X-axis).

3. Graph #3: plot power output in kgm/min (Y-axis) against force in kg – total weight in kg (X-axis).
How does the velocity of movement change with force (total weight of the load)?
- As the resistive force increased, the velocity at which Jamison could move the weights began to
decrease.

What is considered the optimum “load” (dumbbell size) for this exercise (refer to graph #3)? Optimum
load refers to the load at which maximal power output is achieved.
- For Jamison, the optimum load was 15.91kg (35lbs).

4. Consider your favorite physical activity. Which type of test (strength, endurance, power) would best
relate to this activity?
- Dan: Powerlifting. Tests like the broad jump and the other 1 rep max tests for strength and
power.
- Zach: Lacrosse. Endurance tests and select power tests.
- Eli: Baseball. Power tests
- Jamison: Weightlifting/Benchpress. Strength, endurance, and power. Power and strength for the
benchpress.
