THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF LIVING IN SMART

CITIES
Smart cities are built on new technologies to improve people’s lives. The idea of
living in one of them sounds very exciting. But is a life controlled by smart
technologies good or bad for us?
Let’s start with the advantages. One of the biggest advantages of smart cities is the
high level of convenience they offer. Nowadays, people no longer need to stand in
long queues to reserve a spot or make a booking in hospitals and other public
places because they use smart cards for citizens such as health IDs, transportation
cards, etc,... With smart technologies in place, people can access information and
services quickly and easily. This makes daily life more efficient and saves
people a lot of time. Additionally, the negative impact on the environment is
reduced through smart resource management and energy-saving practices.
However, there are some disadvantages we have to face when we live in a smart
city. Since cameras are installed everywhere for security purposes, city dwellers
will lose their right to privacy. Next, people become worried because their
personal information might not be protected, with interconnected systems, hackers
can break into their home network and dig into their private life. Furthermore,
smart cities are also the cause of the generation gap because the elderly will often
be less knowledgeable about information technology than the rest of us.
In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages of living in a smart
city. Im my opinion, however, the promise of these urban areas is undeniable. With
careful consideration of privacy and cybersecurity concerns, smart cities can
become more appealing places to live as our world continues to evolve and
embrace technological advancements.
