Vocal Skills

● PITCH- This means how high or low you speak.

● PACE- This means how fast or slow you speak.

● PAUSE- There are three different types of pauses:

-Short pause: This is when we take a breath, usually when there is a comma in or
a full stop at the end of a sentence.
-Longer pause & long pause: We use this type of pause to create atmosphere,
tension or suspense when we tell a story. When we see an ellipse (…) in a piece
of writing, this can indicate that there is a long pause.

● TONE OF VOICE- This refers to the attitude/emotion with which we speak. The
tone of your voice can be angry, happy, frustrated, excited, etc.

● VOLUME- This is how loud or soft we speak.

● EMPHASIS- This is when we stress a certain word or words in a sentence to give it
importance.

Different ways of portraying a character:

Verbal/Vocal-
1. Pitch (how low or high your voice is)

2. Pace (how slow or fast your voice is)

3. Volume (how soft or loud your voice is)

4. Tone (the feeling, mood or atmosphere)

5. Pause
6. Emphasis

Non-Verbal/Physical-
1. Facial Expressions
2. Gestures
3. Body Language
4. Movement/Action

It is important that an actor utilizes all the above to successfully convey their character to the
audience.

Along with the above, there are certain technical skills an actor needs to be aware of when
performing:

1. Articulation (the formation of clear and distinct sounds in speech.)

2. Projection (extending your voice outward.)

3. Blocking

POSSIBLE ART CAREERS

A graphic designer or visual designer is a professional who works with the printed or drawn
form of communication, including corporate design, book cover, and page design, advertising,
web design, and interface design. Graphic designers are often requested by clients to develop
original logos, icons, or typography.

A fashion designer creates clothing, accessories, and other wearable art. They use their skill,
creativity, and imagination to develop new trends and styles. Fashion designers are experts in
design, marketing, merchandising, production, and sales. Fashion designers often design
accessories like shoes and jewellery etc.

An interior designer is a trained professional who is hired to create a beautiful environment for
their clients. Interior designers often work with a team to create concepts that are functional and
feasible. This includes architects and engineers in addition to specialized trades such as painters,
carpenters, landscapers, or pool builders.

A product designer develops a product with the goal of addressing an unmet need or desire.
They create products that are visually appealing, technically feasible, and desirable. They execute
the design process which includes ideation, research, prototyping, testing, and iteration to test
designs with customers.

MURAL: a painting or other work of art executed directly on a wall.

POSTERS: A poster is a large sheet that is placed either on a public space to

promote something or on a wall as decoration. Typically, posters include both textual
and graphic elements, although a poster may be either wholly graphical or wholly text.
Posters are designed to be both eye-catching and informative

What DOES belong on the poster

• title of the show
• venue
• open and closing dates
• how to get ticket information (probably a phone number and/or a website)
• some kind of imagery (if you think you’re poster should just be text, you better get
a rock star graphic designer to make that text look amazing)

What DOES NOT belong on the poster

• NOT every individual performance date and time
• NOT information about where to park
• NOT ticket prices (unless that’s one of the compelling things about your show –
and I doubt it is)
