ME6503 DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS
ASSIGNMENT II
PART A
1. What are the possible modes of failure of the pin(bolt) in a flexible coupling?
2. Differentiate between rigid coupling and flexible coupling.
3. What are the stresses act on screw fastenings due to static loading.
4. List the advantages of cotter joint over threaded joints.
5. Draw the various kind of screw fastenings.
6. Draw the force deformation diagram for a bolted joint.

PART B
1. Design a protected type flange coupling for the following requirements.
Power to be transmitted = 10KW
Speed of the shafts = 960rpm
Select suitable materials.

2. A cast iron cylinder head is fastened to a cylinder of 500mm bore with 8 stud
bolts. The maximum pressure inside the cylinder is 2Mpa. The stiffness of the
part is thrice the the stiffness of the bolt. What should be the initial tightening
load so that point is leak proof at maximum pressure? Also choose a suitable
bolt for the above applications.

3. A machine frame, with a pulley weight 100N is bolted to the walls as shown in
fig.1. The pulley weight can be assumed to act at 180mm from the wall and the
belt tension in the pulley, 2000N can be assumed to act at275mm. Two bolts are
used in each of the two rows. Find a suitable bolt for this arrangement. Assume
that the bolt material has an allowable shear stress of 35Mpa.

4. A rigid steel bracket subjected to a vertical force of 10KN is shown in fig.2. It is
fastened to a vertical stanchion by means of four identical bolts. Determine the
size of the bolts by maximum shear stress theory. The maximum permissible
shear stress in any bolt is limited to 50N/𝑚𝑚2 .

5. A bracket is fitted to a channel with 4 bolts as shown. Distance between bolts 1
and 3 is equal to the distance between bolts 2 and 4, which is 150mm.
Eccentricity is 300mm. Find the suitable bolts.
