Converting Between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages:
Type Method Example
Decimal to Fraction Step 1: Count the number of places/digits after the decimal Example 1:
0.02
Step 2: Write as a whole number over 10,100,1000 etc depending on how many places/digits you counted after 0.02 has 2 places after the decimal
2 1
the decimal. The =
For example, If 1 place after the decimal write over 10, if 2 places after the decimal write over 100, if 3 places 100 50
Example 2:
after the decimal write over 1000 etc 1.024
1.024 has 3 places after the decimal
Step 3: Simplify the fraction 1024 512 256 128
= = =
1000 500 250 125
Decimal to Percent This is easy. It is only 1 step! Example 1:
0.45
Step 1: Multiply by 100 0.45 × 100 = 45. % = 45%
Note: When multiplying by 100 we just move/shift the decimal 2 places to the right Example 2:
1.243
1.243× 100 =124.3%
Fraction to Decimal There are 3 types of questions that come up Example 1: Type 2
3
Type 1 (Easy): The fraction is already over 10, 100, 100 etc. 20
! We can write this as an equivalent fraction over 100 or over 10
This is easy since means ! ÷ # and you should already know how to divide by 10, 100, 1000 etc. Remember,
"
dividing by 10 just means moving the decimal one place to the left, by 100 means moving the decimal 2 places Let’s do both ways over (way 1 below is easier)
to the left etc (the number of zeros tells us how many places we should move the decimal to the left). Way 1 write over 100 Way 2: write over 10
# 3 ? 3 ?
e.g. = 2 ÷ 100 means to move 2 places to the left hence 0.02 = =
$%%
20 100 20 10
Type 2 (Medium): The fraction is not over 10,100, 1000 etc, but you can write as an equivalent fraction over We need to multiply 20 by 5 We need to divide 20 by 2 to
10,100,1000 etc and then it becomes type 1 above. to get 100 so we multiply 3 get 10 so we divide 3 by 2
# '
e.g. = = 4 ÷ 10 = 0.4 by 5 which is 15 which is 1.5
& $%
Note: If you struggle with equivalent fractions see the cheat sheet called fraction rules
15 1.5
100 10
Type 3 (Hard): The fraction is not over 10,100, 1000 etc and you CANNOT write as an equivalent fraction
over 10,100,100 etc. This means 15 ÷ 100 This means 1.5 ÷ 10
!
We must then use short division instead using the fact that is the same as writing # ,,,
) !,, Dividing by 100 means we Dividing by 10 means we need
"
) need to move 2 places to left to move 1 place to the left.
Careful not to divide the wrong way around. Notice that the numerator goes underneath: = - ),,,,,.
*

15 is the same a writing 15, Moving one place to the left

Think of tucking the top cat into bed nicely and leaving the squirrel so moving two places to the on the number 1.5 gives 0.15
outside to keep watch! left gives 0.15

Example 2: Type 3
5
11
We can’t write this over 10 or 100 etc. Use short division instead:
Set up as: 11 )5000

Remember we might need to fill in the decimal and any extra zeros
that we need after when doing the division

0.4545
0000000000
11 )5.0000
= 0. 45̈
Fraction to Percent Step 1: Turn the fraction into a decimal (using the row above – fraction to decimal) Example 1:
8
Step 2: Turn the decimal into a percent (using 2 rows above - decimal to percent) 20

We can write this over 100

8 40
= = 0.40
20 100

Now we multiply by 100

0.40 × 100 = 40
Example 2:
5
8

We CANNOT write this over 100

0.625
000000000
8 )5.000

0.625 × 100 = 62.5%

Percent to Decimal This is easy. It is only 1 step! Example 1:
42%
Step 1: Divide by 100 by moving 2 places to the left 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
Example 2:
35.8%
35.8 ÷ 100 = 0.358
Percent to Fraction Step1: Write the percent as a fraction over 100 Example 1:
22%
Step 2: Simplify the fraction 22 11
=
100 50

Step 1: Turn the fraction into a decimal (see fraction→decimal section)

Step 2: Multiply the decimal found by 100 (move the decimal two places to the right)
!
Example 1: change to a percent
"#
We change to a decimal which is 0.40 and then multiply by 100 which is 40
$
Example 2: change to a percent
!
We change to a decimal which is 0.625 and then multiply by 100 which is 62.5

There are 3 ways to do this

depending on the type of question
Step 1: Multiply by 100
Way 1: Divide immediately IF the denominator is 10,100, (this means we move the decimal two places to the right)
1000 etc (we move to the left by the number of zeros). Remember that when we have a whole number the
Way 2: Write as an equivalent fraction over 10, 100, 100 etc decimal is “hiding” at the end of the number
and then divide as mentioned in way 1
Way 3: If you can’t write as an equivalent fraction, then divide Example 1: change 0.45 to a percent
0.45×100 = 45%
directly using short division
Example 2: Write
%
as a decimal
Example 2: change 1.243 to a percent
(
!! 1.243×100 =124.3%
Example 1: Write as a decimal We can’t write this over 10 or 100 etc, so
#"
We write as an equivalent fraction over 100 or 10 we use short division instead
If we write over 100, we get

This means we do 15 ÷ 100 which is 0.15

11 )5 ⟹ so, we get 0. 45̈ Step 1: Divide by 100

(this means we move the decimal 2 places to the left)
Remember that when we have a whole number the decimal is “hiding” at the
