Maximum RPM Limits for NOV Motors with MWD

Scope:
This document provides Maximum RPM Limits for NOV drilling motors run with MWD systems as per below.

Guidelines:
- Are only to be used for rotation within the limits of the Maximum Adjustable Bend Setting for Rotary Drilling
tables in the NOV Motor Handbook.
- Apply only to motors that are run with an MWD system that allows the driller to monitor and mitigate shock
levels and collar RPM in real time at the rig, to minimize harmful effects on the motor. If no MWD is used,
follow guidelines below, up to a max of 50 RPM.
- When back reaming, reduce the rotary RPM by a minimum of 50% from the RPM values below, and the
motor flow rate by a minimum of 30%.
- These guidelines are based off theoretical calculations. Local conditions and experience may dictate that
rotary RPM be reduced further, to prevent motor failure.

Caution:
- Higher rotary speeds will increase the possibility of catastrophic motor failure if drilling conditions are not
monitored and actions taken to minimize harmful effects on the motor:
 Increased shocks/vibrations, which can cause motor housing fracture, connection backoffs, and
bearing failure.
 BHA whirl, which can cause motor housing fracture and connection backoffs.

A. Curve Sections:
When transitioning from a curved to lateral section, maintain “Curve Sections” RPM limits for at least one full
length of the motor before switching to “Straight Sections” RPM limits. Keep in mind that rotating a bent
motor in a curve will always increase the risk of fracture, and should be avoided if possible.

Motor Size 0° 0.39° 0.78° 1.15° 1.50° 1.83°

4‐3/4” to 7” OD 85 85 70 60 50 40
7‐3/4” to 9‐5/8” OD 85 75 65 50 40 35

* Note: If rotation above 1.83° bend angle is unavoidable, it should be done at 20-30 RPM to limit the fatigue cycles experienced by the
motor housings.

B. Straight Sections:
These values apply to straight hole sections, including vertical and tangent/lateral sections. The motor
setup may be either straight housing or adjustable assembly set to 0°.

Motor Size 0° 0.39° 0.78° 1.15° 1.50° 1.83°

All sizes 100 85 85 85 70 50

String (surface) rotation in a straight hole above the stated 100 rpm limit should only be done if a critical
speed / vibration analysis is conducted on the BHA. NOV can analyze the BHA using proprietary
VibraScope™ analysis software.
