MATH34011/MATH29141 — T UTORIAL W ORKSHEET 5

Qu 1 (The ‘opposite Liouville theorem’) Suppose f is an entire holomorphic function whose

modulus is bounded below:
∃M > 0, ∀z ∈ C | f (z)| > M .
Prove that f is constant.

2z
Qu 2 Consider the rational function f (z) = .
z 2 − 4z + 3
At which points does f fail to be holomorphic? Hence find the largest domain D on which
it is holomorphic.

(i). Find annuli or discs centred at z 0 = 0 on which f is holomorphic,

(ii). Repeat the above, but with z 0 = 1,

(iii). Repeat with z 0 = 2.

Find the Laurent or Taylor series of f in each of these annuli or discs.
