Although social media may be beneficial, if teenagers ever feel uneasy about what
they see or read on it, they should follow their instincts and speak
with an adult — a parent, a teacher, or another trusted adult. Bullying, threats,
and cruelty on social media are all signals that the person who is doing them needs
assistance.

NOW THE BAD EFFECTS OF USING MEDIA

The good is accompanied with the evil. Despite its many advantages, the nature of
social media poses a number of potential problems.

Reality vs. Online

-The issue isn't with social media. It's the way people utilize it as a substitute
for true conversation and face-to-face socialization. On social media, "friends"
may not be friends at all, and may even be strangers.

Increased usage.
-Usage has increased. Spending too much time on social media can lead to
cyberbullying, social anxiety, depression, and exposure to inappropriate
information.
Social Media is addicting.
-It's easy to become addicted to social media. When you're playing a game or doing
a chore, you strive to achieve your best. When you achieve, your brain releases
dopamine and other pleasant chemicals,
making you feel good. When you upload a photo to Instagram or Facebook, the same
logic is at work. You'll unconsciously register it as a reward once you see all the
alerts for likes and good remarks
crop up on your screen. But that's not all; social media is rife with mood-altering
activities.

Fear of Missing Out

-FOMO has become a popular topic, and it frequently leads to a constant check of
social media sites. The fear of missing out on something if you're not online might
have a negative impact on your mental health.

Self-image issues
-Social networking platforms give tools that allow users to gain praise from others
for their looks as well as the ability to compare themselves to others. It has been
linked to issues with body image. The most susceptible
are "selfieholics" and those who spend the majority of their time uploading and
scrolling. Most undergraduate ladies who use Facebook at least five times each day
are likely to associate their self-worth with their appearance.
That isn't to say that social media is the root of the problem; it just serves as
a conduit for it, exacerbating the problem. It also encourages others to behave in
the same way.

Social media and bullying

-Sadly, there is an ugly side to all that technology offers. While bullying is not
a new concept, social media and technology have brought bullying to a new level. It
becomes a more constant, ever-present threat -- cyberbullying. The State of Rhode
Island anti-bullying laws & regulations define bullying and cyberbullying as
follows:

“Bullying” means the use by one or more students of a written, verbal or electronic
expression or a physical act or gesture or any combination thereof directed at a
student that:

causes physical or emotional harm to the student or damage to the student's

property
places the student in reasonable fear of harm to himself/herself or of damage to
his/her property
creates an intimidating, threatening, hostile, or abusive educational environment
for the student
infringes on the rights of the student to participate in school activities
materially and substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly
operation of a school
