INTRODUCTION:
•Lightweight concrete is a type of concrete that has a lower density than
normal concrete. •This is achieved by using lightweight aggregates, such as
expanded clay, expanded shale, or pumice. •Lightweight concrete has a
number of advantages over normal concrete, including: •It is lighter, which
can reduce the weight of a structure and save on materials. •It has better
thermal insulation properties, which can help to reduce energy costs. •It is
less permeable to water, which can improve durability.
•TYPES OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE
There are two Main types of light weight concrete:

•Structural lightweight concrete: This type of concrete is used for load-bearing applications. It has a
density of 800 to 1850 kg/m³.

•Non-structural lightweight concrete: This type of concrete is used for non-load-bearing

applications, such as insulation or fireproofing. It has a density of 320 to 800 kg/m³.
AGGREGATES FOR LIGHT WEIGHT
CONCRETE:
• The most Common agregates are used in
Light weight concrete are :

1. Expanded clay
2. Expanded shale
3. Pumice
4. Perlite
5. Vermiculite
PROPERTIES OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE:

•The properties of lightweight concrete vary depending on the type of aggregate

used and the mix design.

•However, in general, lightweight concrete has the following properties:

• Lower density

• Better thermal insulation

properties
1.
• Less permeable to water

• Reduced fire resistance.

• Reduced strength
APPLICATIONS OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE
•Lightweight concrete is used in a variety of applications, including:

• Roofing

• Insulation

• Fireproofing

• Underfloor heating

• Bridge decks

• Tunnel linings

• Precast concrete elements

Advantages Of Lightweight Concrete

•The advantages of lightweight concrete include:

• Lighter weight

• Better thermal insulation properties

• Less permeable to water

• Reduced fire resistance

• Reduced cost
DISADVANTAGES OF LIGHT WEIGHT
CONCRETE
• Reduced strength.

• More expensive than normal concrete.

• More difficult to work with it.
CONCLUSION:
• Lightweight concrete is a versatile material with a variety of
applications.
• It is a good choice for applications where weight, thermal insulation,
or water resistance are Important considerations.
• However, it is important to be aware of the reduced strength and cost
of lightweight concrete when making a design decision.
