Managerial Roles
The managerial roles comes under 3 areas. The roles were categorized by Henry Mintzberg.
Interpersonal roles
Informational roles
Decisional roles
Interpersonal roles
Interpersonal roles focuses on working with other people. There are 3 roles under interpersonal
roles
1. Figurehead
It is a role of a manager who focus on inspiring the people within the organization to maintain a
connection between each other
2. Liaison
Liaison plays a role in building up relationships between people and facilitates communication
between 2 parties.
As in Fraser food we could see that Janice Turner has built up a good relationship with Perkins
and its suppliers, Kathryn maintaining a good relationship with the local college and offers work
placements to students
3. Leader
Role of guiding and influencing the behavior of employees towards achieving the organizational
goals.
As in Fraser foods we could see that Hazim Khan regularly meets with his team of chefs and
discuss every issue while giving them the freedom to create new products using their talents and
also keeps an eye on how they go about the job. Robin Fraser as the operations director and has
the responsibility of quality assurance, he ensures the correct ingredients and combinations are
used so that the company can reach to its goals.
Informational roles
Informational roles shows how managers share their knowledge with the employees in order to
accomplish the organizational goals.
1. Monitor
Contributes in monitoring useful information regarding the activities taken place within the
organization.
As in Fraser foods we could see that Laura Bolton is the finance director of the organization and
she keeps an eye on the cash flows. As the finance is an important resource of the organization it
should be monitored in its inflows and outflows.
2. Disseminator
Sharing information with employees internally and keeping them informed.
As in Fraser foods Hazim Khan regularly holds meetings with his team to discuss the problems
and ideas. He evaluates the customer’s feedbacks and make sure his team is informed so the
targets can be achieved.
3. Spokesman
Responsible for sharing information to the external parties. As in Fraser foods David Fraser
communicated about the delay in payment by Perkins to them, it was noticed by Laura Bolton.
This information being conveyed to Perkins shows the role of a spokesman.
Decisional roles
1. Entrepreneur
Acting as an initiator, designer and generating new ideas and thoughts to develop the business.
Sidar Akhtar who is the marketing director works with Robin Fraser in trialing and piloting new
product ideas.
2. Disturbance handler
Handling conflicts and problems which arise in the organization.
Although Perkins keep delaying payments Fraser foods have been able to maintain its standards
without creating any issue between the organization and Perkins.
3. Resource allocator
Deciding on what resources should be allocated and where (equipment, funds & human resource)
As the company is fastly growing in its readymade meads the company should allocate its
resources in an effective and adequately to meet the company mission statement.
Activities of a manager
1. Planning
Planning is the process of determining the activities required to achieve a desired goal. Mangers
play an important role in an organization as they should make correct decisions, in order to make
correct decisions there should be a good plan which will guide them to achieve the
organizational goals.
As in Fraser foods the managers have been able to plan the process of meeting the demands. The
managers have also contributed in planning and analyzing their products to assure that customer
focus and quality are important.
2. Organizing
Process of distributing of resources and assigning tasks in order to achieve stated goals of the
organization.
Fraser foods is operating in a fast moving food product market, due to that managers have a key
role in allocating the necessary resources such as machinery, materials, money and human
resources in order to provide quality products to the customers.
3. Leading
Leading the employees will contribute to achieve the organizational goal effectively. Managers
should lead from the front to set an example to its employees. As in Fraser foods Hazim Khan
holds regular meetings with his team to discuss on any issue and ideas and also influence them to
contribute to achieve the targets.
4. Controlling
This is the process of ensuring whether the plan is implemented and carried out as planned. It is
about controlling resources.
