3.2 Access and Peep Doors

3.2.1 The cast peep door shall be lined with a proprietary ceramic fiber module insulation. The module
insulation shall be suitable for service at 2600ºF (1427ºC), unless otherwise specified on the Furnace Lining
Schedule.

3.2.2 For shop assembled furnaces, the peep door lining specified in Paragraph 3.2.1 shall be supplied and
installed by the furnace steel fabricator.

3.2.3 Insulating Firebricks (IFB) shall be stacked up dry (without mortar) inside the access door openings prior
to furnace start-up.

3.3 Brickwork (Insulating and Refractory)

3.3.1 All brickwork shall be mortared (unless otherwise noted) with air setting mortar compatible with the
brickwork supplied. Mortar shall be mixed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, and quantity used
shall comply with the manufacturer's recommendations. Mortar shall be omitted at expansion joints.

3.3.2 Floor brick shall be laid up dry (without mortar).

3.3.3 Specific details for anchoring, supporting and providing expansion joints in walls shall be in accordance
with the KBR design drawings.

3.3.4 Holes and gaps in the silica block after its installation over H tie backs shall be packed with ceramic fiber
or air setting mortar prior to installing lining over the block.

3.3.5 Support lintels in IFB walls are located on the basis of 0 in. (0 mm) thick mortar joints. Specific
dimensions at lintels shall be maintained by cutting top courses to suit.

3.3.6 All expansion joints in IFB walls, castable refractory and around burner blocks shall be made with ceramic
fiber blanket as specified on the Furnace Lining Schedule. The width of such joints shall be suitable for the
thickness of the refractory. When appropriate, the strips may be shredded to facilitate packing into the
expansion slots.

3.3.7 The IFB walls shall be constructed with interlocking brick expansion joints in accordance with KBR design
drawings. IFB’s at expansion joints shall not be mortared.

3.3.8 Temporary wooden shims shall be used as required to prevent pre-compression of the ceramic fiber
blanket at horizontal lintels before the brickwork mortar sets.

3.3.9 The brickwork shall be dried in conjunction with the castable linings of the furnace in accordance with the
requirements for artificial drying in KBR Technical Standard MB11-1TS.

3.4 Ceramic Fiber

3.4.1 Reformer Furnace Pigtail Boxes shall be lined with proprietary ceramic fiber modules and Millisecond
Boxes shall be lined with ceramic fiber blanket and silica block/castable in accordance with the KBR design
drawings.
