4.1.4 The spring housing shall be designed to resist the maximum test loads outlined in Paragraph 4.4.6
without any visible distortion or buckling.

4.1.5 A suitable centering guide shall be installed at the bottom of spring housings, and between two or
more spring assemblies in series to assure coil alignment. These centering guides shall be fabricated as
single piece items.

4.1.6 When KBR Type 3 spring supports are specified, the distance between lugs shall be 1/4 inch (6 mm)
greater than the diameter of the support rod. The distance between lugs will be specified on the Order when
the support rod is supplied by the Purchaser.

4.1.7 The spring housing of rod supported hanger assemblies under load, shall align, within 1/8 inch per
10 inches (3 mm per 250 mm) of housing length, measured at the base of the housing, of the line of action of
the rods.

4.1.8 Travel stops shall be provided to lock the spring hanger, at the preoperating position, against upward

4.2.3 One of the following types of scale will be specified on the Order:

a. Type A scale (for travel and load) shall be graduated in inch and 1/10 inch (cm and mm) increments for
travel, and in pounds (kg) for load. The calibration load (hot load) and the preoperating load (cold load)
shall be indicated on the scale.

b. Type B scales shall be used on reformer catalyst tube springs. Type B scale (for travel alone) shall be
graduated in inch and 1/10 inch (cm and mm) increments. The zero mark on the travel scale shall
correspond to the calibration load.

4.2.4 Scales shall be firmly attached with (4) No. 12 UNC flat head machine screws. Screws shall be clear
of the spring working range and shall not project into the housing.

4.2.5 The scale shall extend through the entire working range of the spring. The upper and lower limits of
the working range shall be stamped on the scale.

4.3 Nameplates

4.3.1 Nameplates shall be stamped with the following information.

a. item number and tag number.

b. operating (hot) and preoperating (cold) loads when the spring is supplied with a Type A scale.
c. calibration load when spring is supplied with a Type B scale.
d. spring type, size, and Figure number, if any.
e. calibrated spring constant.

4.3.2 The Type B scale shall be aligned such that the calibration load mark corresponds to a major

4.3.3 The nameplate shall include the following instruction - "Read scale from bottom of the load indicator."

4.4 Spring Calibration

4.4.1 Springs shall be calibrated for the specified operating load (hot load).

4.4.4 Spring loads shall be applied by a dynamometer having a guaranteed accuracy of ±1/2% of the
applied load. The dynamometer indicator shall be at zero load position when completely assembled with
spring and test hardware.

4.4.5 To assure the absence of any restrictions to total spring travel within the housing, the spring shall be
depressed approximately to the bottom of the working range and then released, allowing it to return to its
unloaded state. The dynamometer indicator shall advance smoothly without hesitations throughout the
length of travel.

4.4.6 Calibration and testing of the spring and test hardware assembly shall be performed with an accuracy
of ±1/32 inch (0.8 mm) on linear units and shall be done in the following steps:

a. The spring shall be depressed to read the calibration load on the dynamometer.

b. A horizontal line at least 1/4 inch (6 mm) long shall be scribed opposite the reading (bottom) edge of the
load indicator and to the right of the slot on the outside of the housing. Readings may be accurately
transferred by wrapping a flexible steel tape or rule around the housing and using the tape or rule as a
scribe guide.

c. The spring shall again be depressed with a dynamometer loading equal to the lower limit of the working
range (Column 8) of "Spring and Hanger Support Schedule", Step (b) shall then be repeated.

d. The housing shall be checked for any out-of-plumbness which shall not exceed 1/8 inch in 10 inches
(3 mm in 250 mm) of housing length.

e. The spring shall be released to a point slightly above the upper limit of the working range and then
depressed with a dynamometer load equal to the upper limit (Column 8) of "Spring and Hanger Support
Schedule", Step (b) shall be repeated.

f. The distance between the upper and lower markings determined in steps (c) and (e) shall be accurately
measured and recorded.

g. For springs with Type B scales, the spring constant, in pounds per inch, (kg per mm) shall be
determined by dividing the load charge (steps c and e) by the travel distance (step f) and the value shall
be placed on the spring scale nameplate.

h. The indicator scale shall be attached and positioned to the right side of the indicator.

i. For springs with Type A scales, the Supplier catalog spring constant may be used. It is not required to
determine the individual spring constant of springs with Type A scales.

4.5 Inspection

Calibration and testing of spring assemblies shall be witnessed by the Purchaser's representative.

5. MARKING AND SHIPPING

5.1 Marking

5.1.1 Each spring housing shall be identified by the Purchaser's mark number die punched on the housing
