TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

DIRECT FIRED AIR HEATERS - ELBOW TYPE

MB41-3E

DATE: 01 AUG 2003 ENGINEERING SERVICES BY KBR TECHNICAL SERVICES, INC. PAGE 1 OF 2

1. GENERAL
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This standard together with MB15-1TS and the Data Sheet covers the design, materials, fabrication, and
the burner requirements of elbow type air heaters.
1.1.2 The manufacturer shall be responsible for the design, engineering, fabrication, and burner requirements
of elbow type air heaters.
1.2 Units
1.2.1 The U.S. customary units contained in this standard shall be regarded as standard.
1.2.2 All pressures specified herein are gauge pressures unless otherwise noted.
1.3 Modifications

Special project requirements and any exceptions or modifications to this standard, including any mandatory
requirements of governmental authorities which apply, shall be as specified in MB15-1TS.
1.4 Codes, Standards, and Specifications

The following document is referenced herein and forms part of the Order. Current edition of this industry
standard including all mandatory addenda in effect at the time of the order shall apply unless otherwise
indicated.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS (ASME)

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Current Edition, including all mandatory addenda in effect on the date
of the Order
Section VIII, "Pressure Vessels" Division 1

2. COMBUSTION CHAMBER
2.1 General
In addition to the requirements specified herein, the design, materials, fabrication, and inspection of the
combustion chamber shall be in accordance with ASME Section VIII Division 1.
2.2 Design
2.2.1 The head and shell thicknesses shall be calculated using the following:

a. The yield stress at design metal temperature.

b. 100% efficiency.
c. The pressure Pd derived as follows:
Pd = 8(Po+14.7 psi) - 14.7 psi {Pd = 8(Po + 101.4 kPa) - 101.4 kPa}

in which Pd = maximum theoretical pressure, psig (kPa) , and Po = maximum operating pressure, psig
(kPa), both are specified on data sheets.

2.2.2 The design of other heater parts shall be based on the design pressure derived by using the previously
calculated head and shell thicknesses.
2.2.3 The combustion chamber shall be lined as shown in Figure 1.
2.2.4 A sight glass shall be provided in the combustion chamber for viewing the burner flame.

2.3 Materials

The lining material shown in Figure 1 shall be such that the metal temperature does not exceed 650oF (343oC).

3. BURNER

3.1 Design

3.1.1 The burner shall be designed for firing fuel as specified on the Data Sheet and shall be capable of
releasing 120% of the heat required for the operating conditions as specified on the data sheets.

3.1.2 The burner shall be equipped with a gas fired pilot. A high voltage electrical ignition system complete with
transformer, spark plug, and push-button switch shall be furnished to light the pilot flame.

3.1.3 The pilot burner barrel and the fuel gun shall be designed for axial adjustment within the burner pipe and
ignition cone.
