PEERS® Social Goal Setting

Congratulations on joining the UCLA PEERS® for Young Adults program! To fully benefit from
the program, we would like you to think about what you hope to get out of PEERS® by creating
SOCIAL GOALS. As a reminder, these are the topics covered in PEERS® for Young Adults.

• Making and keeping friends • Having get-togethers with friends

• Finding a source of friends • Developing and maintaining romantic relationships
• Conversational skills • Handling arguments and disagreements
• Starting and entering conversations • Handling teasing
• Exiting conversations • Handling physical bullying
• Electronic communication • Managing cyber bullying
• Appropriate use of humor • Minimizing rumors and gossip

1. To guide the process, young adults and social coaches may discuss the following
questions:

• Why were you interested in joining PEERS®?

• What do you wish were different in your social life?
• What do you think will be most helpful to learn about in PEERS®?

2. Generate social goals from your discussion of these three questions. Social goals should
be described in positive terms (e.g., something you want to increase or improve).
Examples might include:

• to meet new people • to feel more confident in handling bullying

• to have close friends • to be accepted or get along better with peers
• to feel more comfortable in social situations • to feel more comfortable in dating situations

3. Create 1-3 social goals specific to PEERS® and rate how satisfied you CURRENTLY
are in achieving that social goal.
(Note: We will ask you to rate your satisfaction in achieving these social goals throughout the program.)
