LEARNING ACTIVITY 2.2: ESSAY

Dear Student, discuss on the following questions with your partners.

1. One way of defining sport is as “organized” competitive activity, what do we mean by

that?

In accordance with what I have learned on this module, I perceived that meaning of the phrases
“organized” competitive activity in determining sports only means that the said activity possess definite
form or process that incorporates rules or regulations by which each players should follow since the
activity has been refined and formalized to some degree. Rules highlights the whole activity and these
rules or procedures can not be changed during the competition. Overall, sports are organized, follows
certain rules or regulations and is very competitive in nature that involves game, competition, or activity
needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according to rules. Therefore, sports indeed
defined as an organized competitive activity since we all know that sports incorporates competition thus
forms the competitive activity. And we all should bear in mind that sports without competition is only a
mere play or recreation. It has unchangeable aspects that only sports possess which makes it differ from
other activities. And that’s how the word “organized” meant in sports.

2. And how do you differentiate sport from other forms of exercise and physical activity?

Based on what I have learned on this lesson, I can differentiate sports from other forms of
exercise and physical activity in such way that sports incorporates definite rules and regulations,
whether it’s written or not, and it is undeniably different among other forms of exercise and physical
activity because sports highlights competitive activities. When we say competitive activities, there are
two opposite teams competing to each other. Therefore sports has competition which other form of
exercise or physical activities don’t have. It differs from exercise and physical activities because we all
know that exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposive in the sense
that improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness is an objective. While
physical activities such as occupational, household and many daily tasks is a complex behaviour. Both
exercise and physical activity are typically performed in the most efficient manner possible. These
physical activities are done with little regard to physical fitness and are often structured with
conservation of energy expenditure as a goal. With that being in mind, sports are truly different from
these two, from the competitive aspects it possess up to the process and rules it offers to its players.
Overall, sports are organized, follows certain rules or regulations and is very competitive in nature that
involves game, competition, or activity needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according
to rules. Competition the core value of sports. Without it, sports can be just simply a form of play or
recreation the competitive aspect is essential to the nature of sport. And that explains why sports differ
from other form of exercise and physical activities.
