questions below.
Last summer, I went to New York with my aunt and uncle. We stayed in a small

we bought tickets for the show The Lion King. The tickets were $75, but the show was
amazing! We also visited my aunt’s friend Sue in Yonkers. She took us to the museum. It
was really interesting. On our last day in New York, we had a picnic in Central Park.
Then we took the bus to Brooklyn Bridge and looked at the beautiful view. In the
evening, we had pizza at a wonderful restaurant near the river. It was delicious!

Amy: We’re very different. I really enjoy learning new things. What subjects do you like?
John: I love IT because I’m interested in computers. I’m also keen on drama. I think
acting is great.
Amy: Really? We’re very different that way too. I’m just too scared in front of people.
What do you think of maths?
John: Actually, I really don’t like maths. I just can’t understand it. It’s terrible.
Amy: Different again! I like maths and I enjoy science a lot too.
John: OK, science isn’t bad. It’s actually kind of interesting.

All the children hurt themselves from time to time. But when thirteen-year-old Ashlyn
Blocker gets injured, she doesn’t realise it. Once, when she burned herself, she only knew
about it when she looked at her skin. There was always something different about
Ashlyn. As a baby, she didn’t cry. When she was eight months old, her parents noticed
there was some blood in her eyes, so they took her to see a doctor. The doctor found a
serious cut in her eye and was shocked. Tests showed that Ashlyn had a very unusual
medical condition: she couldn’t feel any pain. The first few years of Ashlyn’s life were
very difficult. She often tripped and injured herself. Once, she broke her ankle, but she
didn’t stop running. When she was five, Ashlyn’s story appeared in newspapers and on
TV. Scientists studied her condition and found she has a genetic disorder that means pain
signals do not reach her brain. As Ashlyn knows, a life without pain is both difficult and
dangerous.
