Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Family is the fundamental and important structure of the society that has an
important role in one's life and in the society. The importance of the family as a social
structure is something unmistakable. Although affected by society and peers, children
are more influenced by the family. The influence of the family on the child and its roles
in the creativity, cultural, social, and moral aspects are very great and important. Correct
and balanced relationship between parents and their children is one of the factors
influencing both their physical and mental health. Research has shown that interaction
between children and parents and how parents communicate with children are
considered to be the most important and fundamental factors among the various factors
that affect children’s fostering and healthy character. (Kimble, 2014)

This study is about improvement, the impact parenthood in academic


performance, continuing their study attached by:(Regier 2015) Academic achievement is
an important factor that determines student’s future career. Social life and status.
Academically successful individuals are more likely to be employed, be more productive,
and therefore have a higher salary and become active and happier citizen (Regier, 2015)
Therefore, for every country, Increasing the academic achievement of students is a
priority in education.

But the question that comes to mind is that whether the educational success
relates to parents’ parenting styles. And secondly, what is the relationship of parenting
styles with students' career path? No quite similar studies on the subject of the present
study have been done so far. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the relationship
between parents’ parenting styles and educational success and career path of the
students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the academic year 2014. In this
study, we intended to find out whether there is a relationship between parenting styles
and students’ academic achievement and career path? The results of the previous
researches suggest this relationship.

RATIONALE
This correlational study investigates the relationship between parenting styles
and the academic performance of Grade 12 students at Saint Vincent of Quebiawan
Integrated School. The study aims to examine how various parenting styles, including
authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful, impact students' academic
achievements. A mixed-methods approach was employed, utilizing surveys to gather
quantitative data and interviews to gain qualitative insights from both students and their
parents.

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY


Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no statistically significant correlation between
parenting style and the academic performance of Grade 12 students at Saint Vincent of
Quebiawan Integrated School.
Alternative Hypothesis (H1): There is a statistically significant correlation
between parenting style and the academic performance of Grade 12 students at Saint
Vincent of Quebiawan Integrated School.
The null hypothesis (H0) suggests that there is no relationship or correlation
between parenting style and academic performance. The alternative hypothesis (H1)
posits that there is indeed a statistically significant relationship between parenting style
and academic performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


This study aims to identify the impact of parenthood in academic performance
continuing their study in St. Vincent of Quebiawan Integrated School. It Specifically
answer the following Questions:

What is the impact of parenthood in academic performance continuing their
study in SVQIS?
Specific Questions:
1. What parenthood factors affect academic performance?
2.How does parenthood affect the academic achievement of students in
different grade levels?
3.What are the barriers and challenges that prevent parents from being involved
in their children’s education?
4. How parental involvement in children learning could be improved?
5. What is the effect of parenthood on academic performance?
6. To explore the impact of parent involvement on student in St. Vincent of
Quebiawan Integrated School?
7. What is the impact of parental support to student motivation?
8.How can parental involvement be integrated into the curriculum and
pedagogy of 21st Century learning?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY


The significance of a study titled "Parenting Style Towards the Academic
Performance of Grade 12 Students of Saint Vincent of Quebiawan Integrated School: A
Correlational Study" lies in its potential to provide valuable insights into the relationship
between parenting styles and the academic performance of Grade 12 students.
In summary, the study's significance lies in its potential to enhance the
understanding of how parenting styles are related to the academic performance of
Grade 12 students, with practical implications for parents, schools, and educational
policies.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Local
Based on the results of the research authored by Dr. Shiela May B. Labajo, titled
Perceived Parenting Style and Academic Performance of Grade Vi Learners in One
Elementary School in Iloilo Province, Philippines, Learners in Batuan Elementary School
in the District of Carles, Division of Iloilo, Philippines adopt assertive democratic or
balanced parenting in rearing their children, wherein they rely on positive
reinforcement and seldom use punishment in disciplining their children. They
understand how their children are feeling, and they teach them how to regulate their
feelings. They often help their children find appropriate outlets to solve problems and
encourage them to be independent, but they still place controls and limits on their
actions. (Labajo, 2022)

According to Edna Sanchez research entitled ‘INFLUENCE OF PARENTING STYLE


ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND BEHAVIOR OF LIPA CITY COLLEGES STUDENTS:
BASIS FOR PROGRAM FORMULATION’’ the influence of parenting style to academic
performance and behavior of Lipa City Colleges students vary significantly. There are
strong association between the parenting style, academic performance and behavior of
students. the researcher utilized a total of 259 college students enrolled on first
semester 2016-2017. Respondents of the study are chosen through purposive sampling.
The researcher came up to a conclusion that most of the respondents experienced
permissive style pf parenting and got passing grades (Sanchez, 2022)

International
According to Mehrafza (2005) Titled: The relationship between parenting style
and creativity of student achievement in the third year of Tabriz in a study examined the

relationship between parenting styles and creativity and educational achievement of the
students of grade three of high school and found that there was a significantly positive
relationship between the emotional atmosphere of the family, declining to the
principles of democracy, and creativity. Furthermore, there was a significantly negative
relationship between the creativity and dictatorship principles and there was no
statistically significant relationship between the emotional atmosphere of the family,
declining to absolute freedom, and creativity which is in an acceptable conformity with
the results of this study.
The title, The influence of parenting style on academic achievement and career
path authored by Zahrah Zahedani,The results showed that there was a significantly
positive relationship between parents’ firm parenting style and students’ career path.
This means that when the score of the firm and reassuring parenting style increases, the
score of career path increases, too, and vice versa. The correlation coefficients obtained
shows that the relationship between these two variables is relatively high.
