1. Write short notes on - (3 ×1 =
3)
(a) Negative Slip; (b) Specific speed; (c) Leakage loss
2. Why should we choose Centrifugal pump over reciprocating pump? Write 4 reasons. (4 × 0.5 = 2)
3. List the main component parts of Reciprocating pump. (2.5)
4. Write down the working principle of Centrifugal pump with necessary sketch. (2+2 =
4)
N √Q
5. Prove that specific speed, N S = (3)
H 3/m 4
6. Why do we connect centrifugal pump in series and parallel? write shortly.
(1.5)
7. Draw the operating characteristics curve of centrifugal pump. (2.5)
8. A single acting reciprocating pump has a plunger of diameter 250 mm and stroke of 350 mm. If the speed of the
pump is 60 r.p.m. and it delivers 18.5 Lit/s. of water against a suction head of 5 m and a delivery head of 20 m, then
answer the following questions: (3 ×2.5 =
7.5)
(a) Coefficient of discharge
(b) The power required to drive the pump
(c) Do you think the suction pipe is too long?
9. A centrifugal pump has the following characteristics: (3×2.5 + 1.5 =
9)
 Outer diameter of impeller = 800 mm;
 Velocity of whirl of the liquid at the exit from the impeller = 18.39 ms-1
The impeller runs at 550 r.p.m and delivers water at 0.98 m 3s-1 under an effective head of 35 m. A 500 kW motor is
used to drive the pump. Assuming that water enters the impeller vanes radially at inlet, Determine –
(a) Tangential Velocity at exit; (b) Manometric efficiency; (c) Mechanical efficiency; (d) Overall efficiency
