The blood circulatory system

The blood circulatory system consists of

Heart
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
Single circulation
The blood flows through the heart once during each circuit of the body.
Deoxygenated blood from body → heart → lungs → oxygenated blood to body

Double circulation
The blood flows through the heart twice in one complete circuit.
Deoxygenated blood from body → heart → lungs → oxygenated blood → heart → body organs

Pulmonary Circulation:
Between heart and lungs
 The deoxygenated blood pumped into the pulmonary artery is passed on to the lungs from where the oxygenated
blood is brought by the pulmonary veins into the left atrium.
Deoxygenated blood from heart → pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary vein → heart
 This pathway is called pulmonary circulation.
Systemic Circulation:
 The oxygenated blood entering the aorta is carried by a network of arteries, capillaries, and arterioles to the
tissues. Here the deoxygenated blood is collected by a system of veins, vena cava, and veins and is further emptied
into the right atrium.
 This is a systemic circulation.
The main arteries of the body

 Pulmonary artery: from heart to lungs.

 Carotid arteries: supply oxygenated blood to head and neck
 Subclavian arteries: supply the oxygenated blood to arms or forelimb.
 Aorta: the biggest artery from heart
 Hepatic artery: supply the oxygenated blood to the liver
 Mesenteric artery: supply the oxygenated blood to the intestine.
 Renal arteries: supply the oxygenated blood to th each kidney
 Iliac arteries: supply the blood to the legs or hind limb.

The main veins of the body

 Pulmonary vein: from lungs to heart.

 Jugular veins: collect the deoxygenated blood from head and neck
 Subclavian veins: collect the deoxygenated blood from arms or forelimb.
 Vena cava: the biggest vain
 Hepatic vein: collect the deoxygenated blood from the liver
 Renal veins: collect the deoxygenated blood from the each kidney
 Iliac veins: collect the deoxygenated blood from the legs or hind limb
