Year 11 Physics — Unit 1 and 2 Revision #1

1. This question is about linear motion.

A 2400 kg car is accelerating. In 30 seconds the car experienced a change in velocity of
24m/s.
a. determine the force causing this acceleration (2marks).

b. If the final velocity of the car was 32m/s, calculate the initial velocity of the car
before it accelerated and the distance in covered in the 30 seconds (4 marks).

2. This question is about thermal transfer.

800g of water in a beaker is placed on a hotplate. The temperature of the water before
heating is 290K. If the hotplate can supply energy at a rate of 1000W, determine the
temperature change of the water in one minute assuming the energy transfer from the
hotplate to the beaker is 100% efficient.

3. This question is about mass defect.

a. Find the mass defect of a copper-63 nucleus if the actual mass of a copper-63
nucleus is 62.91367 amu (3 marks).
Protons = 29
Neutrons = 34

b. Explain why there is a mass defect for all elements (2 marks).

4. This question is about the electric current through a circuit.

Explain the difference in total current for the following two circuits. You should support
your explanation with calculations (5 marks).

5. This question is about harmonics.

A string is fixed at both ends. The string is caused to oscillate with frequency 800Hz. The
diagram below shows the standing wave that forms at this frequency:

Determine the frequency and period for the third harmonic of the same string (5 marks)
