Experts in climatology and other scientists are
extremely concerned about the changes to our
climate. Admittedly, climate changes have occurred
on our planet before. For example: there had been
several ice ages or glacial periods.
These changes were different from the modern ones
because they occurred gradually and naturally. The
current changes aren’t the result of natural causes,
but of human activity. Furthermore, the changes are
occurring alarmingly rapidly.
The major problem is perhaps, that the planet is warming up. According to some experts, this warming, known
as global warming, has been occurring in the last 10,000 years. The implications for the planet are very serious.
Rising global temperatures could give rise to such ecological disasters such as floods and droughts. This could
have a harmful effect on agriculture.
This unusual warming of the earth has been caused partly by so- called greenhouse gases, such as carbon
dioxide, being emitted into the atmosphere by car engines and modern industrial processes, for example. Such
gases, not only add to the pollution of the atmosphere, but also create a greenhouse effect, by which the heat
of the sun is trapped. This leads to the warming up of the planet.
Politicians are also concerned about climate change and there are now regular meetings on the subject,
attended by representatives from many of the world’s industrialized countries. In Kyoto, Japan in 1997, it was
agreed that the most industrialized countries would try to reduce the volume of greenhouse gas emissions and
were given targets for their reductions.
It was also suggested that more forests should be planted to create so- called “sinks” to absorb greenhouse
gases. At least part of the problem of rapid climate change has been caused by too drastic deforestation.
Sadly the targets are not being met. Even more sadly, global warnings about climate changes are often still
being regarded as scaremongering.

Answer these questions

1. What climate changes have taken place before the present time?
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
2. What are the main differences between modern climate changes and the ones that occurred in the past?
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
3. What were the agreements reached in the summit in Tokyo?
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
4. Which suggestions were made and why?
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Express your opinion: Is global warming true or false? Give reasons.

A. Pre-watching - Match the words or phrases to their definitions on the right (write the
correct letter in each box).

1 retreat (v) a a low area between two high waves or hills

2 gravity (n) b a warning of danger or of a problem
3 level (v) c the highest part or point of a hill or wave
4 trough (n) d to surround a city with soldiers and try to take control of
it
5 debris (n) e to move back and cover less of a place
6 besiege (v) f to happen or appear for the first time in a particular place
7 alert (n) g the force that makes things fall to the ground
8 divert (v) h the pieces that are left after something has been destroyed
9 originate (v) i to knock (someone or something) down to the ground
10 crest (n) j to change the direction of (something)

B. Now watch an animated video about how tsunamis work and fill in the gaps in the
following sentences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx9vPv-T51I
1 Tsunamis are commonly known as ……………………… ……………………….
2 Ocean waves are limited in ……………………… and ……………………….
3 An earthquake on the ocean floor is caused when the...........................................................................of
4 This energy travels up to the surface,......................................water and raising it above the normal sea
5 Because there is less water to move through, this massive amount of energy is ……………………….
6 Tsunami means “........................................................................” in Japanese.
7 If the ……………………… of a tsunami reaches shore first, the water will ……………………….
8 The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was one of the deadliest ……………………… ………………………
9 People have attempted to stop tsunamis with sea walls,..........................................................................,
10 When nature is too powerful to stop, the...........................................................................is to get out of

C. Now watch the video again and decide whether the following statements are true or
false? Write T for True or F for False.

1 The Persian soldiers who were trying to invade Potidaea were drowned by a tsunami.
2 Tsunamis are caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun.
3 Tsunamis have low and high points just like regular waves.
4 Normal ocean waves only involve motion of the uppermost layer of the water.
5 The energy that causes normal ocean waves comes from underwater.
6 An earthquake on the ocean floor is the most common cause of a tsunami.
7 A tsunami can be easily noticed even when it is far from the shore.
8 When a tsunami approaches the coast, it travels faster.
9 A tsunami can travel a mile or more into the mainland.
10 The wall surrounding the power plant in Fukushima was high enough to protect it from the tsunami.

Correction Criterion: It is a group project; it means all of the students must work. The paper must be clean,
organized and neat when hand it in. Students must show comprehension of the questions asked in the paper and of
course the connection with the answers.
To face some of the exercises students must watch youtube video. Spelling and grammar mistakes will be taken
into account.
